I have totally given up on buying music. I don't go around stealing it, it's just that there's a lot of people out there who are making great tunes are willing to share them for free. It's for the love of the art or something important-sounding like that. Today, Kotaku Tower got an email from lad in Ireland who writes:
I'm part of a wee small music collective from Ireland... (O)ne of our "artists" who goes by the moniker of KickAcid has taken a bunch of gameboy cartridges, plugged them into to his sampler, [bleeped] around a bit and made the seven minute magnum opus of a videogame theme nostalga fest that is "Computer Lame".
Those Irish have such potty mouths! In any case, I took a listen to it and I think it is worth the free download. Why? Well, on top of the fact I liked it (I would sneak it into a dinner party playlist for fun), you could also pull some of those fantastic Gameboy sounds yourself without all that nasty '.m4p' encoding.

i can temporarily disable my aversion to jungle/house/what-have-you-beats and say this was a pretty lively jingle.
go irish duder!
That was AWESOME. lol
Kinda lame, actually. There have been two products - LittleSoundDJ and Nanoloop - that have let you do this since the late 90s. Stale.
Windows has been around a while too.
I didn't know a little creativity was dependent on the age of tools available.
Beginning part became a bit tedious, but I loved it once it switched to the Metal Gear part. I didn't get the whole radical change of pace at the end with the whole rock theme and no Gameboy noises >_>
@Dorphat: oh, and chords, too! they've been around since at least the mid 1940's...
What Beck did on his GameBoy Variations EP was way better, you might have to pay for it, but that GameBoy Remix of Hell Yes is worth it, believe me.
Despite that, ANY new GameBoy remixes get a positive nod from me.
Try OC remix and some other sites! There great!
Hint: Beck did it a while ago, he did it much better, and even though not free Its worth every penny.
I'm not even going to suffer through listening to that ugly bloopy mess.
I swear, if I shit in boxes and offered it as "free shwag" people would gobble it right up. Hopefully not literally.
Poop jokes aside, shitsux. Don't even bother...
not bad, but you should check out DJ scotch egg, breakcore-madness!
Ever since I started making music, there was something that I set my mind well over a decade ago: I make music for the love of it, I would never "try and go pro" and of well over 300 tracks, I havent made a dime of any of them, always having free online. I call it a "hobby" but it really is a passion... oh, and fun tune from KickAcid.
v ^_^
Beck didn't do anything. He had guys do it for him. I'm pretty sure it was 8 Bit Weapon, but it could have been someone else.
Besides, this is straight-up sampling for the most part, not programing like someone would do with Nanoloop.
hmm. not really my cup of whatever, but I like the idea of doing it with real hardware instead of using samples, like I do.
Ooooo!! Free video game related music! Seeing as we're on the subject, I did a remix of Segata Sanshiro's theme song. Please give it a listen. Do it now!!
*bows head and screams...*
Onegaishimasu!!!
Check it out: Sega Saturn shiro!!!
What is that first sample from? I remember hearing it, I think on the SNES, was it a Mario game? Wow this is really bothering me. I should remember this. Anyone know?
Donkey Kong. As the main page was loading I remembered. Damn, sorry for the unnecessary extra post. Good song though.
Alec Empire brought out an album based purely from gameboy samples in 1999 under the moniker Nintendo Teenage Robots, called We Punk Einheit! Very abstract. My friend made me laugh when he said "I don't know who's more of a cu*t, him for making it or you for buying it!"
