Following in the footsteps of its demo, the launch of the full version of EA's SKATE for the 360 has been delayed by two days making the official date Friday, Sept. 14 instead of the former Wed. Sept 12. This news was posted yesterday to EA's Skate forums and over all, people don't seem to be terribly upset by the news. EA even posted a small apology to those who were anxiously awaiting the big day:
If you were planning on staying home sick on the 12th to name your first gap or if (like us) you bought a bunch of guacamole that expires on the 12th for your Skate party we send our sincerest apologies!
I think at this point we are starting to get pretty used to delays and as I and many others have said in the past (including the exalted Shigeru Miyamoto), I would rather wait a couple of extra days or even months for a fully functioning, awesome game than to get a rush job that will eventually have to be patched or in the worst case, replaced. Remember Bubble Bobble Revolution?

Please delay it some more, its not like I want to buy your game anyway.
Call in sick? Have a party? What is this Halo 3? It's Skate, and quite honestly after that demo I'll stick with my tony hawk, thank you.
Oh well.
This is going to end Tony Hawk.
MY GUACAMOLE!
I doubt at this late date they are doing recoding. More like some manufacturing or shipping issue.
I was surprised about how much they revolutionized the skating genre, from what I saw in the demo. In Tony Hawk I could rack up a couple million points with endless grinds to manuals to aerials. In SKATE I was excited when I finally nailed a flip trick off of a grind. Much more realistic, and much more rewarding.
I wasn't to impressed with this game. It felt like tony hawk with a new control scheme. You can still do 15 air tricks while grinding. You can still manual for freakin ever. You can still get like 10 feet of air without a ramp. It was fun don't get me wrong but it's just tony hawk with better controls.
@Ape.of.Gods:
...you actually prefer Tony Hawk over this?
@RavenGT: It's EA. They're like Microsoft, it's your first instinct to absolutely hate anything they do. In time, it will sink in.
The demo was great, and IGN gave the game a 9 (the 360 version anyway). But yeah, I'm puzzled every time I hear a game get delayed by a couple days compared to game delayed for weeks or months.
EA... Hiss BOOOO
Wait... this game is actually decent. WHOA this game is bad ass. How dare EA make a game worth playing!
@Moonshadow101:
They brought us Beetle Adventure Racing. And Mutant League. Every once in a while, they have these wonderful games. It's bound to happen when you release so many of them.
And get over the company hating, your hate should be directed over to bitchy women that complain about skate parties in your neighborhood because the noise was louder than a pin drop.
It's not a company hating thing, but I didn't like the skate. demo, because it wasnt... wasn't that fun. I mean, the graphics were great, the controls were cool and new, but the level design was bland, and the controls made playing less exciting. I'm not looking for a "skating simulator", I'm just looking to have some casual fun when I play a skating game. I'll probably rent skate. but I plan on sticking with the Tony Hawk franchise.
I spent a most of the skating demo setting the character up at different high points, giving him a push, putting the controller down, and seeing how where he ended up.
Im just excited to see some skaters other than Bam. Because Bam has done such a great job at being a skateboarder...
Stupid EA! We don't want your garbage anyway!
Wait, what? This game is GOOD? oops, sorry.
It's a good thing they're not going to eat expired guacamole on the 12th.
What type of party host buys food that expires the DAY of the party!?
Any ways I wasn't to terribly excited about .skate when I heard it was from EA, but after playing the demo they hooked me. I'm so tired of the same old forumula for the Tony Hawk series that this new look on the sport actually made me go out and preorder it. I've probably played through the timed demo 15 or 20 times by now, and thats just in a small enclosed skate park.
The full city and online play is going to be to much.
This is one of those games that I will feel dirty buying. I may have to lock my door so nobody walks in on me.
*knock knock knock* *creeeeeek*
"Helio, I was just going to..."
"Oh shi--" *scrambles to turn off the Xbox*
"Dear God, what are you doing?! Is that... oh God!"
"I swear, it's not what it looks like!"
"...You make me sick." *slams the door*
"It's... It's Activision! I swear! ...it's... Activision..." *cries*
SKATE >Tony HAWK
I can wait a few days, although this actually means another week because gamefly is gay like that >_<
@Heliophage: Because Activision is any better?
(tip: not lately)
@Foggynotion:
Well said.
I was going to skip this, and all future skating games, mainly because I can still taste THUG 2 on my breath. But maybe I'll download the demo.
Well I am coming at this with a different perspective, I liked the over the top stuff in Tony Hawk and as someone who has never or ever will skateboard I liked it as a game.
Where as Skate just annoyed the hell out of me, granted alot of it had to do with making me do a tutorial in a demo, but the instructions were vauge and I hated the controls.
honestly to me this game and tony hawk have little to do with each other outside of both being skateboarding game. Its like back when there was blitz and madden. Some people like the arcadey feel of blitz while others liked the simulation of madden. Personally i enjoyed Skate, but i still find tony hawk to be quite fun. I dont know why you cant like both.
Dammit... but i only have so many sick days in a year!!
As a 25 year veteran of of the sport, I can honestly say I have been waiting for this game since Thrasher: Skate And Destroy (Ps1), which, in my opinion was the last skateboarding game designed with realistic skateboarding in mind. So yeah I am bummed about the delay - at least it's only 2 days.
Tony Hawk is a great game for people who like racing/combo intensive video games. Skate is for people who ride skateboards and/or enjoy skateboarding.
I even told Tony in person that his game was not skateboarding- (Newburg OR, Dreamland Skatepark, 2003)- and he agreed with me! Also I've heard he already owns Skate and loves it.
Back in the day I used to like both Madden AND NFL Blitz. Isn't it ok to like playing both? One was sim, the other was arcade.
It may be a bit of a stretch, but that's what this has become to me now. skate and tony hawk are the sim and arcade, respectively.
I like both.
Two days? I'm not sure that even qualifies as a delay.
Quick Tip: If you want your Guacamole to last more than a couple days in the fridge, pour inside a tupperware with an avocado seed (the big thing inside an avocado, in case you don't know)and close it, and putting in the lower part of the fridge and it will take more than a week to go sour.
Tony Hawks = Fun
Skate = Skating Simulator with some bugs
@flukielukie:
Exactly. TH hasn't been as fun in the last few games, but I rather be entertained with a skating game doing over the top tricks, than bored by one doing the most simplest of things.
Anyone saying this is going to be better than Proving Ground is going to get a sad wake up call after spending some time with this game. It will get tiresome after a while.
I'm totally gonna pick this and the next Tony Hawk up-- can't go wrong with a GH3 demo disc either-- but when the hell is the demo for Proving Ground gonna come out? A week before the game gets released?
@bigtimehmd:
High five, I'm a fan of Thrasher Skate and Destroy. Great soundtrack, too. Also, that's neat to hear that Tony Hawk feels Skate is more accurate than his franchise. Maybe he'll ask for some changes.
@bigtimehmd: I thought it was just me who thought thrasher was way better than tony hawk. I bet i'd be terrible at it now though as it was pretty hard, worth playing if just for the hilarious ragdoll in it though.
I happened to like this game alot (it could be because I skate), and i didn't think the control scheme was that hard after I got used to it. It seems to be the people who are too impatient to learn something and that suck at the game, that think it's bad. Besides, you've only played the demo. It's the full game... The only thing I didn't like was that there were a few "harder" tricks I wanted to pull off, but they weren't in the demo. (example: stalls / freestyle tricks / manual variations (anti-casper, primo), and they left out alot of grabs, plus you can't caveman/get off of your board) I hope they will include those tricks in the full game. I think they should also make the tricks a bit harder to pull off, after you get used to it, the tricks are waaaaayyyy too easy to pull off.
I like how they only mention this is delayed for the xbox360. Are they just going to wait 4 days before the PS3 version comes out to announce that it too is delayed?
And I realize that this has nothing to do with EA (since they already did their part) but, WHERE THE FUCK IS MY SKATE DEMO, YOU SONY BITCHES!?
@DrakeLake:
I'm pretty sure Tony Hawk is just fine with asking for the dump-truck full of money to be delivered to his house before each iteration of his tired series is released.
The only reason I can think of for the delay is that pre-orders took off after the demo and EA didn't have enough games produced to meet the needs of the consumers.
Oh, and skate. > TH.
Tony Hawk is pretty much on the downhill after Pro Skater 3. Good that they'll have competition now (hopefully) so that the genre can move forward.
I believe EA didn't make this game, they are just the publisher/producer. Not positive. Either way, it plays/looks better than any other game EA has to offer. There are some annoying Tony Hawk-ish gameplay features like flips and stuff, but other than that, it matters how you play. You can make the skating look incredibly realistic, or you can play it like tony hawk, just depends if you understand skateboarding or not.
@sqwarlock:
Yes, Skate > TH indeed.
As someone pointed out, you'll be satisfied doing a flip trick onto a rail! With Hawk, I'm only satisfied with 20 moves in a combo, but they're two different games.
Skate. is taking the GTA route, in which, you never really feel like doing an objective at first, but just roam around whilst skating. (And killing those dern prostitues for your money back.)
I watched a video review for this game and it looks awesome, kind of makes me want to get a 360.
I think the exact quote is "A game is only late until it comes out. A game is bad forever."
Dangit- that just gives me two less days to play it before Halo takes over.
And man, I couldn't get enough of the demo- it's clear from those (repeated) 30 minutes that skate is far more rewarding than what's become something of a self-parodying Tony Hawk.
I think this proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the 360 is hard to program for!
Sorry I just had to say this once in a 360 game delay thread since I always see it in a PS3 game delay thread.
I play the demo more than I've played Bioshock. It's a great game, really, as a skater me and my friends watch and talk amongst each other, we play the game as if we're outside on the streets actually skating, It's intoxicating, we play self regulated games of S.K.A.T.E by passing around the controller rapid fire, topping out each other and having a ball, and it's cool that we can have an experience like that ready for rainy days when we can't go outside and really skate around. Hell, one of my friends even bought a 360 for the sole sake of this game, which may sound a bit radical, but hey, in the eyes of skaters, this game is a godsend top to bottom.
The two days are of no consequence, hey, i've waited for this game long time already, I can spare a couple more days.
@ssjmichael:
That, or you don't have any interest in skateboarding. In that case you shouldn't be playing skateboarding -games- in the first place magn.
Sure, Tony Hawk has it's arcadey brand of fun, which is great, don't get me wrong, but the actual audiance of skaters finds skate. to be a step in the right direction.
This is perfect! I'm throwing a 4 xbox LAN party for skate at my apt on Friday, and my friends and I were not going to play the game all week so that when we skated together on Friday we could discover the game together. This is great because now I won't be temmpted to unplug my ethernet cable and sneak in some playtime before Friday night.
If it's a two day delay, it has nothing to do with development issues, it has to be production / shipping issues.
Damn! Never before have I been so excited for a game after playing the demo (with the possible exception of Bioshock), and I've been part of both Halo 3 and COD4 multiplayer beta!
Many people at work and friends just can't put that demo down (good thing I don't work at Activision though). I've abandoned TH a long time ago because it is always the same thing with over-the-top tricks that don't impress me anymore, but Skate is really something else, it's the most fun and rewarding sport game (alternative or not) I've played in a long time.
The delay, while not a very long one, really sucks because I can't wait to play the game online. I would've even prefered a delay for Halo 3!
The good thing is that now I'll be able to go to that Bioshock presentation of the IGDA, as it was on the same night as Skate's release, I was torn between attending and playing, it seems this is not an issue anymore.
But what about the guac? For the love of god, somebody save the guac!
@z0mbi:
Yeah Skate is definitely a release day buy for me. Like many people got frustrated with the demo at first but went back and learned the control scheme. I think I'll go run through the demo again right now, the voice of the trick contest announcer is calling me for some reason. Sucks that it was delayed a couple days.
