Homestar PSP: Yeah, It's Full Of Stars

Following hot on the heels of the dynamic success of Sega Toys in-home planetarium Homestar comes word via Famitsu that the star projector will be making it's way to the PSP. Yep, Homestar Portable is the "21st century star navigator" for the "21st century Walkman".

Obviously looking to cash in on the lucrative Japanese non-game market, upon which Nintendo has a stranglehold, Sega's Homestar Portable will let you look at stars from the comfort of your bed or toilet. In addition to looking at stars without actually having to leave the house, Homestar Portable will teach you all about constellations, our galaxy's planets, and giant clouds of space gas. The game is scheduled to ship in Japan this October for a cool 3280 yen, with a US release date projected somewhere around Q4 of never.

  • I hope I wasn't the only one hoping for THIS Homestar:

  • Indeed, Mashuren. Indeed.

  • Finally! Now I don't have to subject myself to the clearly excessive and tiring exercise of looking up.

Now, if only there was a software for PSP that would let me look at the ground, maybe identify bugs, and teach me about weeds growing out of the sidewalk.... Do I smell sequel already?

  • Mashuren, you were most definitely not alone.

Although, it would be weird to have Homestar Runner on the PSP, seeing as the Brothers Chaps are pretty big Nintendo fans.

  • PSP = digital school textbook? Clearly they're stretching a bit to find a market for software where Nintendo isn't going to spank them silly, Brain and Sudoku games notwithstanding.

  • Homestar Runner FTW!!!

  • I was also thinking of homestar runner, Damn that decieving headline!!!

  • too bad half the stars will actually be dead pixels.

  • So, let me get this straight, you take your psp outside, scan the screen for what you want to see, and then look up in the sky and see...

Nothing...because your eyes have adjusted to the screen. Then, by the time you see the stars, you've forgotten what you're looking for, and have to look at your PSP again.

    Rinse and Repeat.

  • Seriously.

  • I'm a bell.

  • More proof that the only good software on PSP is non-game related!

  • I've had "planetarium" software before, found it basically useless. But I suppose if the light pollution is as bad in Japan as it is here (in LA, anyway)... this may be an otaku's only chance to see stars... aside from his daily beatings in the schoolyard.

  • The problem is, for beginners, what you're looking for is the Celestron SkyScope. Looks like a camcorder; select the star you're looking for on the side screen, and then look through the eyepiece to find what you're looking for; it'll give you arrows to get you in the right direction.

That kind of telescope-and-locator planetarium in a box serves the low end much better than stuff like this...

And for everyone else, there's your laptop. Because inevitably, you're going to pick up a telescope, and want to either record what you see through it, or get it to track stuff in the sky.

I suppose there's a 'middle range' between them - but I'm unconvinced that this is a good fit. You'd want to be able to find/locate the stuff in the sky you want to be watching, etc., and load in lots of data that probably isn't included in the built in stuff. It won't have, for example, all of the satellite and space junk data - and you'd want that when you're scanning the sky and see something odd.

  • This was clearly not the pride of the peaches I was expecting.

Identify bugs? That's more something for the DS, Pokédex anyone?

  • Actually, if this tied into the PSP GPS, I think it would be a cool little application. At that point it would be very similar to the Celestron SkyScope.

The PSP screen would show what you should be seeing in the night sky based on your geographical location and direction according to the GPS. You could then use the d-pad to select objects and get more information.

  • Aside from the GPS bit, it would be much more suitable for the DS, where you could use the touch screen to shift your viewpoint and select constellations/stars/whatnot and have the additional information pop up on the top screen.

And what happened to the font? Did someone (by which I mean Zho) forget to close an italics tag? Why, yes, I think he did. There, see if that fixes it.

  • Yup, seems to have worked. Bad Zho, no cookie for you.

  • Like any gigantic, sprawling, metropolis, yes it can be pretty damn hard to see stars in Tokyo although a dvd of stars on a tv screen would probably be a lot prettier than looking at them on a little psp screen. My lovely girlfriend bought me a homestar for my last birthday after I wigged out over them in a department store... sooo pretty. They are a little expensive (20000 yen last I checked) but If you get as excited by looking up at the stars as I do, I highly reccomend one.. just don't expect the projection to be 100% realistic.

  • Cookies make me sick anyway.

  • Do you HAS what it takes to be a Sony Fanboy?

Don't you die on me little PSP, you didn't give me the five bucks!!
