    Gran Turismo's Ramped Up PSP

gtpsp.jpgI've got a bevy of hot gossip for you today, so make sure you check back frequently for all of the juice. I'll kick things off with some more details about Sony's secretly underpowered Playstation Portable.

I reported last week that the PSP may have been deliberately underclocked to save on battery life. Today, I can confirm that the PSP's bus speed was indeed powered down to 111 Mhz to help increase battery life. And I can add that the Sony will likely start releasing a patch to unlock the full power of the PSP on a game-by-game basis. In other words, when a game like Gran Turismo hits the PSP, it will likely come with coding that will temporarily ramp up your PSP's bus speed to its full potential. And when you stop playing the game, the PSP will power back down to it's energy saving reduced speed.

My informants also tell me that the slower-than-advertised bus speed isn t the only nasty little surprise in the PSP for developers. The portable is also a little cobbled in the memory department. In spite of the fact that the PSP has a 32 megs of memory on board, the portable's operating system actually sucks up a full 8 megs, leaving programmers with a mere 24 to play with.

Make sure you check back later today for some new tidbits on the Xbox 360.
