The August NPD numbers just hit and they show that the DS is still mopping up in the handheld battle in the US with a lead over the PSP of more than 130,000 units sold.
The numbers:

DS Lite: 250,599
DS: 27,503

Difference: 131,209
Lifetime
DS Combined: 5,869,374
PSP: 5,003,534
Difference: 865,840.
It is worth noting here that the PSP did come out after the DS, so Nintendo got a headstart.

Nintendo totally could have just given the Wii away and just survived off of the DS sales.
