The upcoming PlayStation Portable entry in the God of War franchise, God of War: Chains of Olympus is the first confirmed title to take advantage of the recently unlocked 333 MHz CPU speed for the Sony handheld. Developer Cory Barlog revealed that the hardware improving changes added for developers in the 3.50 firmware are indeed being used by developer Ready At Dawn, which, I'll assume, is partially responsible for the game looking so damn good.
Barlog's first entry on the official PlayStation.Blog hints that we'll be seeing more of the game at E3.

UPDATE: Didier Malenfant just contacted us with additional clarification on God of War: Chains of Olympus. Details after the jump.
Didier writes:
Just read your update regarding "GoW: Chains of Olympus" and Cory's comments.
Unfortunately this is completely incorrect and I want to make sure the rumors don't start getting out of control.
EVERYTHING that was shown of "GoW: Chains of Olympus" so far was runing at 222Mhz like everyone else. We are planning on having the final game run at 333Mhz but this likely won't be just to improve the graphics which we think are already pretty awesome.
Cory also makes a joke in his post about 1080p on PSP. This, ironically, is not a joke at all. We ARE able to render the game at 1080p if we want to thanks to a feature of the 2.0 version our engine. It doesn't run in real-time but the results look awesome, even with the assets we built for the regular screen size.
Look for a post shortly on our web site to address out the confusion on the CPU speed issue.
So, while God of War: Chains of Olympus will ultimately take advantage of the improved clock speed, it appears that Ready At Dawn's previously shown work is that much more impressive now.
Thanks for the Barlog-to-Kotaku translation, Didier! I guess what they say about when one assumes is true after all.

this is really good news, it sets a precedent for all future PSP games
my only fear is that it might run the battery down too quickly but we'll see
this is great. i cant wait for the demo
i'm guessing this game is the reason they decided to allow 333 to be accessed.
Who woulda thunk it?.........lol
Even though it's not "original," I wouldn't doubt if this game sold quite a few PSPs.
I'd like to see some screenshots that haven't been captured on a different platform (pc build machine perhaps).
Anti-aliasing and other texture filtures not possible with psp hardware are clearly present in all these publicity pics. I wouldn't be surprised if these textures were at higher resolution and full colour depth too..
Make sure you read the exciting fact-clarifying update! It's a doozy!
is it just me, or is READY AT DAWN the BEST!!!
if it wasnt being made by them, i wouldnt be HALF as excited as i am for this game.
...and even at half excited.. thats STILL really excited. :p
I really like God of War's combat, but I can't stand the puzzles that are so easy a rejected lab monkey would scoff at them.
Why would they bother with the 1080p stuff? Unless PSP Lite is going to have a video out...
It's cool that Didier Malenfant is so onto it - good work!
Not a real big fan of GoW series (its good, but a lil overhyped), but damn, the PSP version looks better then 90% of PS2 games...
It just shows what a developer who really wants to make a good game for the PSP is capable of, if they just gave a damn. If they can manage ps2 quality graphics on the psp, without the clockspeed increase, it just makes many of the the other devs look that much more lazy.
Time to buy a PSP.
It just means a PS2 port will be easier down the line, as a way for Sony to maximize their profit on the GOW IP while proving the old PS2 still has some legs when this game sells like hot cakes on its aged but still functioning platform.
That screen has to be a PS2 shot.
...Right?
:D
The 1080 stuff is for press materials and screenshots, because 480x272 doesn't work so well on the web
I bet that the final product will look better than any wii game out...i want a psp just for this game =P
who the hell cares about 1080p on the psp?? That screen is like 5 inches across.
well at least nobody can say the PSP doesn't seriously kick some ass now.
@hobob:
PSP Lite ;)
Great news, God of War: Chains of Olympus will rock. I'm definitely getting it.
I have to get it but... I might wait for the PSP slim before I do, cause playing on the PSP compared to DS is not fun. PSP you play my podcasts and porn on the road not to mention mp3, I browse my PS3 sitting on the toilet to... but games not so much :(
There goes all 20 minutes of battery life, lol.Chances are this game will go hand in hand with the PSP redesign release and leave all the original PSP owners with the choice of playing a scaled down version to save battery life, or enjoy full on gameplay for an entire 15 minutes before recharge, thus essentially leaving original PSP owners wantign to play the PSP GoW at fullon gameplay for more than a few minutes with their perspective thumbs up their asses.
@miguelon918: I bet it will fall a million miles short of RE4.
It does look extremely good for a psp title though. It will be interesting to see what the effect is on battery life though. The Psps battery life is already awful. I wonder if this could make it's battery life fall below 2hours, that would be seriously crazy. I know some games when played online can get it's battery life to 2hours 30mins.
Why does everyone complain about PSP battery life as it stands right now?
My psp gets 6.5 - 7 hours playtime on one charge
Maybe you guys should stop playing in so brightly lit rooms and turn down the LCD brightness :P
@SideFFect:
Exactly, I easily get 6 hours out of it, more if I don't use highest brightness settings or if I use iso games (note : only of the UMDs I legally own).
Only took them two years to unlock it. If only they'd done it in time for MGS:PO, I could really see that game benefiting greatly from the extra 100 MHz.
1080p on a PSP? I'm still skeptical...they better explain that engine 2.0...
