We've seen those h4rdc0r3 Sony fanboys camped out in front of a Burbank Best Buy NINE days before the PS3 drops Stateside. But, what about Japan? I hopped in the car and zipped over to the Yodobashi Camera in Umeda. With the console days from launch, surely, there must be someone crazy enough to camp out. Hit the jump for this post's shocking and exciting conclusion!

Nope. Unless that old guy's packing a tent. How disappointing! There must be an explanation. People in Osaka have:
A). Jobs.
B). Lives.
C). Both.
Granted, I wasn't able to check the entire city, but haven't heard of any line-forming in Osaka or Tokyo as of yet. Soon! Expect the craziness to commence tomorrow. In droves.

Maybe they all know that they have no chance of getting one. Or, maybe PS3 is the next Xbox for Japan.
I think Camping is uniquely American. It doesn't go on much here in the UK either. No one camped for a Wii preoorder for example.
hahahhaha, silly rabbit, you should be watch the line for the Wii, I guess it will right next the 24/7 DS line...
why would there be a need for a line that big, when the store is only gonna have 5?! its kinda pointless i guess.
Some of the most extreme lines and campouts ever have been in Japan, maybe they're just being realistic about their chances of getting one.
Unless that old guy's packing a tent.
I guess I'm too immature...as I found this very funny.
@ cakeordeath
Actually there are lineups for Wii preorders in Japan. The lineups are huge

Wii preorder lineups in Japan
Sorry for the multiple posts, it kept freezing and I wasn't sure if they got through, this is my last for now
Maybe the Japanese aren't passionate about their video games?
Why form a line and camp out at a store thats only getting 2 consoles?
Well, since Sony decreased the system numbers to an even more microscopic number, the Japanese just assumed that almost no PS3s would reach them and people have already found ways to get dibs on what few there are.
I mean, with the last reduction numbers, the Japanese are getting what.. like 20? Not 20 thousand, mind you.. just twenty.
Wow, I wonder if there's an IGN article about the Wii preorder lineup in Japan? :-) Ahh but I jest. I can't imagine why anyone would line up anyway, unless they're doing it a month ahead of time. 128 million people, 80,000 PS3's = 0.0625% chance. I'll even be statistically invalid but more realistic: you have to fight with 1000 other eligible people for a single PS3 on launch day. Hmmmmmmm...
why camping out if the way to buy a ps3 is to win a lottery? most jap' retailers will do that, however there are still some having first come/first have tactic. just get ready for some bloody cat fight in front of those.
Some will have a big surprise when they'll learn the open price ^^
Actually, Espen, it's about 23. don't exaggerate, man...
Where the hell is Florian?
...must...play...more...Gears of War...

Wow another ps3 price drop cool! On the 600 dollar version! Man 300 to go!
Some one said it best why even luanch the thing if your only going to have 5 per store. It actualy will cause negative reaction when every one is playing the wii having fun while you go home to your $600 grill that has no perfect score GOW on it.
There will be no blood shedd ethier becuse the first reviews for the thing are worst than last gen. Here to hoping Resistence can beat GOW perfect 10...LOL
Well Sofmap at least are doing the lottery system, where its just a case of arriving, getting a ticket and hoping that they call your number and if you are lucky you will get one!
It's a bit better than camping outside the door for days in my opinion :)
Well, the japanese do line standing though, maybe not camping, but line standing... I saw the 10 minute high speed video of the line to get in the Ginza Apple store the first day they opened. The video was moving at least at double speed, and it took almost 10 minutes to show the entire line.
They line... it's pretty much the national sport. On the PSP launch de lines just embellished akihabara as if each game store was bleeding a black line of otaku blood.
er...
Let's see if they manage something alike tomorrow morning in akiba.
I'll try and go into Fukuoka tomorrow and see the (lack of) queue at Bic Camera. It'll be interesting. :)
The top picture looks uncannily like a scene from Jet Grind Radio. Check out those long white staircases!
