I just got a panicked call from my wife.
She was walking to her office, down in the lounge, when she heard this really loud noise coming from our entertainment center. Rushing over to see what was going on she saw that the Playstation 3 was on.inside the cabinet behind a closed glass door.
She popped open the door and called me.
The console, she said, was too hot to touch and judging by what I heard on the phone the console's cooling fan had jumped from relatively quiet to jet plane loud. Like, so loud my wife had to speak up to be heard on the phone. As I walked her through the process of getting the television to display the right input the sound suddenly stopped.
The fan had apparently slowed down tremendously after the glass door was opened and the oven-like confines of my entertainment center had cooled off.
I don't think the 360's fans fluctuated this noticeably, or at least not so that I have noticed and it sits right next to the PS3. Kinda interesting, though I'd hate to think what would have happened if we left town with the PS3 on. Hello melted PS3, goodbye house.
For the record, I had a game paused as well, which likely amped up the power use and heat. I left the PS3 on over night, sitting in the menu, and the next morning it was hot to the touch, but no more so than the 360 after a similar period of time turned on in the dashboard.
