There are 8.9 million of you out there that are more than ready to part with large amounts of cash to purchase a PLAYSTATION 3, says research firm Interpret. Moreover, this data is compared to 5.7 million consumers who are willing to buy a Wii and a mere 800,000 who are willing to purchase an Xbox 360.

Where's this data from? 2,000 folks were interviewed online, and this was checked against 2004 Census data and backed up by a random dial telephone study. Say Interpret CEO Michael Dowling:

Actual sales will be dictated by supply constraints, but if Sony had enough supply in the marketplace to fulfill demand, Microsoft would have a very difficult time at its current price point. What Microsoft is hoping for is the early lead helping to drive stronger installed base for them. It's certainly helped them over the short term.

Dowling also added that consumers want to see what is going on with the PS3 before they purchase a 360 or a Wii. But, like, why? Brian Ashcraft
