So, I'm one of the lucky bastards with a PLAYSTATION 3 pre-order at all caps loving retailer GEO. From a reader tip, I was able to make this reservation before the entire country of Japan woke from its slumber and realized this was going down.
Today, I swung by to see if I'm in the clear on launch day. The clerk I spoke with did not have the faintest idea how many consoles the shop will be getting on launch day. And this is AFTER he pulled down a phone book sized book and flipped through it several times. He told me that they wouldn't know until launch.
I am number five in the pre-order line, and the clerk wasn't sure that could guarantee much of anything either. Regarding that scary open pricing, likewise it won't be set until launch. So when everyone is at their weakest and most despearate, they'll be hit with a whooper price tag or a big, fat disappointment. Swell.
