So I decided to ring Running With Scissors this morning after receiving an email from them saying that Uwe Boll was working on a film adaptation of their controversial title Postal.
The phone rang a few times before someone picked up and said Hello. When I asked for CEO Vince Desi, the voice asked in suspicious tone, "Who is this?" I said who I was and suddenly the voice on the other end brightened and the guy said he was Desi.
I got straight to the point and asked if he was serious about Uwe Boll directing a movie based on Postal or was it a joke. Desi seemed a little offended with the question.
"Why would I be joking," he said. "Look, we all know (Uwe Boll's) reputation and you all know my reputation.
"We've been approached by a number of people about making this movie, but Boll was the only one who seemed to get it. He really loves the game, he gets it. He gets the whole humor behind Postal, that was very important to us."
I pointed out that while his reputation was about making a controversial, and some say great game, Boll's was about making one spectacular videogame-based movie flop after another. I asked if that concerned him.
Desi didn't seem worried.
"Postal is its own content," he said. "We try to have fun, we try to make a game that we can play ourselves. (Boll) does his own thing. It is kinda an odd combination, but a pretty natural partnership."
Desi said he's "working with" Boll on the script for the movie and that it won't be based on either of the game's plot but more on the mythos that surrounds the franchise.
Although he couldn't talk a lot of detail, he did confirm that Gary Coleman would be in the movie playing himself. Sweeet!
"I can't wait," he said. "We are known for being outrageous. We may very well be Hollywood's worst nightmare and so be it."
