The First Game of Game Club

I know that E3 is right around the corner, but I think if I keep putting off this first ever Game Club it may never come to fruition. So lets get this thing going.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you probably want to read this first. I still haven't come up with all of the details, but I have decided that what we will most likely do is include a limited number of people in the discussions in our Campfire room (a sort of big, secure chat room) and that we will then post the outcome of the chat in Kotaku for the rest of the readers to continue the discussion in. More details on how we will decide who gets in the door once we get going.

I suspect once we work the kinks out we will be choosing the game to feature in the Game Club, but for this first one ever I decided to would be nice to run a short poll to see which game you want featured. Hit the jump to vote and make sure you check out the three PC titles on the list, whether we pick them or not, they're all worth a play.

Gawker Media polls require Javascript; if you're viewing this in an RSS reader, click through to view in your Javascript-enabled web browser.

  • damn, putting »beyond good and evil« on a 100% first place with just one vote made me feel realy powerfull, sure enough!

  • I have to go for BG&E also, it woould give me a reason to finally pick up and play a gam I have heard so many good things about. My second choice would have been XIII.

  • Beyond Good and Evil for me. I have it, but haven't played it yet. (Actually, you could say the same for XIII and Manhunt.) Anyway, it seems like a good place to start. I will check out the PC games.

  • BG&E! It gives the perfect reason to finally play this game I keep hearing so much about.

  • Cave Story. Its freely available online so it'll be an easy introduction to the Game Club.

  • BG&E - it's the only game (from the choices) that I own.

  • It won't let me vote for Beyond Good and Evil :(

I'm really looking forward to this game club idea, though. Looks very, very promising :D

In any case, I hope to someday see Galactic Civilizations II on that list.

  • Beyond Good & Evil is the best choice, because it feels more book-like, and it's an overall easier experience to have, instead of a game that takes up alot of your time.

  • @DeathJester: Agreed.

  • BG&E for me as well. Only game on the list I've got. And I'm still early on in it - only up to the second dungeon. Just going by its website, DROD looks neat too. And it would be an excuse to try something that I wouldn't have otherwise.

  • with BG&E being on gametap, and gametap being virtually free now for the most part, i would think BG&E would be a great start. I have played it (on gmetap) and rather enjoyed it, and i think this would make it more accessible for everyone whose interest was piqued by it being showcased here.

  • Oddly, i've Beyond Good & Evil is one of those titles i know absolutely nothing about. Out of the others i'd like to play Manhunt and XIII at some point, i just never got to it. So i went with XIII, because Manhunt has a sequel coming up.

  • Beyond Good and Evil fer sure. I still have the gamecube version that I haven't played as yet...

  • @danzuke:

    Copy, Paste comment

  • Cave Story, its free its great and I never played it.All others I have played.

  • I have always heard that Beyond Good and Evil was an amazing game but it just wasnt recieved that well from the public even though the game itself was very well put together and also had some good game mechanics in it. I would absolutely love the chance to analize this game in the Game Club if I could get in to it!

Seriously, Cave Story needs more votes.

  • Wow, so many people haven't played BG&E. It's the only on the list one I've played (and beat). I loved this game, nothing you would buy a system for, but I enjoyed it all the way through, good blend of stuff to do. :) Hope it's chosen.

  • cave story sounds cool, but bg&e sounds like it has a deeper plot

  • Cave story sounds like a perfect game for a game club setting. Free, multiplatform, low system requirements, and apparently it only takes 4-8 hours to make it through the game.

  • Beyond Good & Evil all the way. It needs to be discussed.

  • Cave Story makes a lot more sense. Starting off with a free game will draw a lot more people in, and from there the ones that will be willing to pay for a game will stay. Many people will be turned off at the door, simply because not everyone has the spare cash and time to get this game, and they will never be swayed because they won't know how fun the club actually is.

Plus, Cave Story is the shit.

  • I voted XIII, but only because I was torn between it and BG&E (neither of which I own or have played, but both of which I wish to), and XIII is a) easier to find in stores, and b) cheaper when one does come across it. But I'm fine with BG&E, as long as I can secure myself a copy.

The Game Club is a great idea though. I'd been toying with a similar idea for both games and TV Shows, so to see someone actually do it makes me feel all smart and ahead of the game. For a few delusionary moments, anyway.

  • I would like to vote for Beyond Good and Evil, but let's think about it for a minute. Not everyone have the means to get the game. Someone mentioned earlier that cave story was free. I'm guessing also the majority of commenters use a PC. We should give cave story a chance.

    ~Dr.Chocobo

  • I voted Cave Story, but I feel wrong having not played four of the others.

I did play Beyond Good and Evil, it's good, but it's the... definitive buried treasure. So, yeah, it's a great choice, but it's the choice everyone makes.
Then it's old retail game versus freeeware download. Beyond Good and Evil took me a while to find a couple years back, though I didn't use these internets, I hear they help...

And in Cave Story, you shoot stuff.

  • Another vote for Beyond Good & Evil here.

I hope we can also start a discussion on how some new IP's thrive and others (like BGE fail) despite FANTASTIC reviews. I am fascinated by the ongoing success of some franchises despite lackluster gameplay at best and how some wonderful gems just never reach a wide audience.

  • Dr Chocobo makes Kotakuite Mac users everywhere shed a tear. You're probably right, though.

  • So... am I going to have to bite the bullet and install Boot Camp? I vote for whichever game will run on my Macbook Pro.

Where are the console games? I was expecting, like, Lufia 2 or something.

  • If BG&E were back compat with the 360, I'd choose that one. As is, I picked XIII

  • Cave Story, most definitely. Graphics may be a bit primitive, but it's an amazing piece of work that was created by one person during the span of several years.

    And it's free.

  • Oh, and there's a Mac version of CS available as well. Also free.

  • Mac users rejoice...On the Wikipedia entry for "Cave Story" there appears to be a link to the MacOS-X build.

    [en.wikipedia.org]

  • Go Cave Story.

It benefits from being free, and very low spec. Picking any other option would bar people (i.e. me) who do not own the game, or who do have a decent computer.

Also, Cave Story is alt-tab friendly, and can be run in a window, with a chat onscreen at the same time.

  • Well since it seems that everyone is going for BG&E or Cave story, lemme put it this way:

Cave story is quite possibly one of the most beautiful things to come out in the last 5 years. Its an ode to gaming at its height, and should be used as a standard for amazing platformers. Its simple, but compelling.

BG&E, although great, isnt as easily accesible as Cave Story (mainly because Cave Story is freeware.) It also didnt get me in my gamers-gut nearly as much as cave story.

  • Normally I'd go with BG&E, but um, I already played it and wanted to vote for something else. XIII anyone?

  • Awww - now I feel like I shoulda voted for Cave Story...oh well. Hope to participate either way. Should be fun.

  • It'd be great (if highly unlikely) if companies would aid this brilliant idea for a Kotaku Game Club by offering a free demo or time-limited evaluation copy of their games. Alternatively, if more companies whose games have been out for ages and stopped selling a few years ago would release their product as abandonware, then Kotaku.com could host them and the select few each week or month could all play them.

    @Kotaku:

    One thing of note.

Still an amazing idea, but this is going to have a major side effect.

    Piracy.

I can see it now, go to torrentspy, check out games. Hmmm new torrent. "Kotaku game club of the month torrent 8/08 Fallout Tactics"

Of course, only go with free games, and you're gonna go no where after a while.

Use console games, and EB and others will clearly 'run out' of even their used copies or simply not have them.

Personally, the torrent actually might be the best option O.O

Oh, and B G/E is fricken amazing.

  • @peanutismint I think the best thing to do would be to try to strike something up with Gamestop/EB or that new game rental service that 1UP will be utilizing. Cross promoting for the win.

  • For those of you voting for Cave Story because it's free, have you seen the price of BG&E? It costs about as much as a decent lunch break (Brueggers or Subway).

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 11:05 AM on 06/18/07 *

I voted manhunt, just because it would be interesting to see an intelligent conversation spawn off from that game. ;D

  • If you guys do decide on BG&E, be sure to dissect the unbelievably crappy and simplistic storyline, and why no reviewer anywhere ever called the game on it.

  • @PaulMorel: For those of you voting for Cave Story because it's free, have you seen the price of BG&E? It costs about as much as a decent lunch break (Brueggers or Subway).

Still need the console, and to find the game. Huge difference between free and cheap, downloadable and cast into the wild like a forgotten panda cub (pandas do that, right?).
Game's still a good choice, though, and looks like it's doing well at the moment.

  • I voted for BG&E because I already own it, I still haven't played much of it, and I hear it's fantastic. This will give me an excuse to stop playing WOW and immerse myself in a game with an actual story.

Though I'm intrigued by Cave Story and XIII, so maybe we can get to those in future months. (As it seems like BG&E is running away with this poll.)

  • BG&E sounds like a winner to me - it's one of those games that not many people played (including myself) but gets high marks around the old internet water-cooler.

It's definitely a title that could lead to some interesting discussions as far as whether it's worth the revered status it seems to hold, why it failed at retail and what, if anything, could have been done to try and get it in the public's eye.

Beyond Good and Evil - ill dust my PS2 copy off and play it while we discuss in the chat on the night :)

  • BG&E is one of numerous games I own and have yet to complete.

  • Beyond Good and Evil, since I actually HAVE it!

  • Vote for the game everyone can play. Cave Story for the win!

  • Aren't you breaking the first rule of Game Club???

  • I also voted for Beyond Good and Evil, because it was released on 4 different platforms. Between PC, xBox, PS2, and GameCube, its likely just about everyone here will have a system to play the game on (still have to find the game, however).

Also, it is yet another game that I have, but haven't gotten around to playing yet.

How do we get into the coveted 'inner sanctum' book club with the chatting and 1337-ness? Do I send in a c.v. or something?
