"Massive damage." LOL! "Giant enemy crabs." LOL!!
Ungh. Uttered at Sony's train wreck of an E3 presser, the phrases were, emphasis on "were," internet memes last year. This year, we have totally new memes, but don't tell that to Pokémon: Diamond localizers — They're still partying like its 2006. Tipster Dave informs us that after he defeat the first Gym Leader in Diamond, the above groan inducing conversation popped up. Too corny!

It was funny in Contact DS, now it just seems mean.
What with Nintendo kicking Sony's butt and all...
1ST COMMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@OllieCostello: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAMN YOU FOOLS
You know, massive damage did have meaning before that keynote. Should every script be banned from using it just because it was an internet fad?
@OllieCostello:
You know a good way to get banned? Type "first comment."
Other good ways include being off topic.
This kind of reminds me of how no game can have the word "goons" in it without apparently referring to Something Awful.
Sometimes, a phrase is just a phrase. Some people like to read way too much into things.
There was another internet meme reference that I just read in that game today... I forgot exactly which one it was though.
Wow! Is this the a new low for geek elitism Bashcraft? "WE DECREE THIS MEME IS NO LONGER FUNNY!"
There may be a statute of limitations on these things but so does Kotaku's bread and butter of Papercraft, Game Cakes, Speed Runs, Super Mario 3 performed by robots/elves/sock-puppets/grannies or the NES controller remade as radios/handbags/bookends/orbital re-entry devices.
I thought it was pretty funny, but that was so 5 days ago. Where have you guys been?
I'll always love that meme. That was such a landmark press conference. I never want to forget that day. :)
@Arcon:
Hahahaha! I lolled. Good point.
I think anything that still makes you chuckle still holds validity. Unless I missed the internet-wide memo with a list of new memes that we're allowed to use, and ones that have been officially struck off the funny list by the internet police.
I'm sorry but I still find this funny.
It must be the way that YouTube guy 'macaw45' put together that clip. I find myself going back to it every so often and it still makes me laugh. Must be the comedic timing.

@OllieCostello: Yea ollie...its a bit immature tbh...[on topic] rofl, all the more reason to buy pokemon =D!!!
@ashcraft: Sorry babes.
Occasionally there are still funny jokes using "All Your Base" so I don't think the Riiiiiidge Racer, giant enemy crabs, massive damage and real time weapons change are ready for the dustbin yet. Although I think Sony will need to release some new memes for us to take the piss out of fairly soon.
Sooo... i herd u liek mudkipz ^_^

16TH COMMENT!!!!!!!!
(Yeah, that really is kinda silly - adds nothing to the thread - not that I have many valuable things to add myself...)
Back-to-topic, I do find the paradigm shift in localization a welcome change - I would cringe back then with the now-infamous "All your bases"-type lines, but to actually see localization taking into account proper language nuances as well as the vox populi of internet fora speaks volumes about how far the industry, and gaming culture, has evolved in the past decade.
I still think it's hilarious. But that's just me. And the people above me. And other people that still think it's hilarious.
It's still funny, just not this time. It feels a little forced here.
Surprised they didn't name an enemy "Phil Harrison" with dialogue afterwards from an NPC called Reggie, "Wow you took names and kicked some ass."
A quote from the Hipster Handbook:
"Hipster Rule Of Thumb #437: A backlash becomes necessary when a hipster's "clever" pop culture refence is referenced in pop culture. On rare occasions, the backlash itself will find it's way into mainstream knowledge. In the event of a double backlash, refer to section 36A, sub-heading: Recursive Scorn."
@ashcraft:
Threatening to ban should be a bannable offense!!!!
Also, that part of the game might have been translated back when the meme was still funny.
(I still find it hilarious, with the way the PS3 is going, it might mark the exact turning point in history when Sony started going bad, and Nintendo made their big comeback.)
Meh. The D/P localization is a bit weird throughout the entire game. "Noob", "For the win" and "Owned" are just some of the strange quotes in the game.
Well I lol'ed
:'(
First comm... I mean... Are you sure this was actually a joke? "Massive damage" is a legitimate term, the only reason it's a joke with Genji is because people thought Genji was going to be realistic because it takes place in a historical setting... I mean, Inu Yasha takes place in a historical setting, too, but it's far from realistic... I never saw the big deal with the Genji speech in the first place.
Nintendo does plenty of geek culture references but I think in this context it's just the english language. There's nothing there to indicate it has anything to do with the meme.
FIRST MASSIVE COMMENT!
I also remember someone in the game saying they were "owned" and I believe I was also called a "noob" by another trainer. Definetly a fan of the writing in this game.
@Mank: Just saw yours after my post! NICE!
But seriously, it can't be helped... today, everywhere you see 'massive damage', you can't help but laugh, and thats a good thing isn't it?
@johnlucas:
I personally think this version was the best:

@khdownes: So can we declare that May 8th, 2006 is the day Sony died?
Nintendo attacks Sony's weak point for massive damage!
Heh.
I love the "massive damage" meme, too. But without "giant any crabs" or "hitting the weak point" it doesn't feel like it's playing off the Sony speech.
I do hope to see it in more games like it did in Viva Pinata and stuff, though!
Well, as long as we're talking obscure phrases in the new Pokemon, how about the clown who tells you that "A Winner is You"?
Oh sure, you'll run this story but not the one I tipped off about the Something Awful reference.
After defeating a trainer on Route 208, an artist guy near Hearthhome City, talk to him again and he will say he is inpired to paint a picture that he will call "My Pokemon is Fight".
One of the Something Awful forums goons are on the localisation team, the same team that caused a ruckus with FFIV for GBA. Apparently FF Fanboys don't like having their holy scripture soiled by in jokes like "you goons wrecked by airship something awful".
I still love watching that keynote. I should stop living in the past.
@cringer8:
That's my #2 fave. The extended cut parody. The Warhawk guy is just incredibly hilarious working that Sixaxis. Oh my God. Hahahahaha! How he suddenly puts it down after clumsily trying to land the plane making the control look as unwieldy and wack as he could possibly make it. Yeah, #2 fave.
Macaw45's is my #1 fave though because of his hilarious juxtapositioning of the soundbites. It's so popular that his style made its way into other mockeries.

I think that phrase more than any other doomed Sony this generation.
John Lucas
Oh, really?
I want to slap Nintendo's translators sometimes. I've counted at least two Something Awful references in that game, as well as the "massive damage" thing, and the scattered "noob"s and such.
I mean, I can barely stand internet memes when they're used on the internet - people who use them in other contexts are just...the worst sorts of people, really.
(although, slightly hypocritically, i laughed at "a winner is you". maybe because it's more of a reference to Nintendo's history that became a slight internet meme, rather than something pulled off some stupid forum)
Weirdly, they wouldn't allow a 'massive damage' quote in Starfox Command despite that game having a Giant Enemy Crab boss, and being released (presumably) within BAshcrafts acceptable 'still funny' limits*.
*which I disagree with, as (unlike the PokeMon example) I'm fairly sure a well placed massive damage line would make any nerd smile.
"Nothing doing!" is still my favorite, in the pokemon sapphire/ruby casino.
Being pretentious and holier-than-thou about INTERNET MEMES IN YOUR VIDEO GAMES is by far the nerdiest fucking thing you guys have ever done.
@jasu:
But oftentimes, it is. In Final Fantasy I & II, the line is "Those goons must've messed you up SOMETHING AWFUL". In Pokemon D/P, not only is the phrase 'goon' present but one guy proclaims that he doesn't "have stairs in his house", and a third guy talks about writing a Pokemon book called "MY POKEMON IS FIGHT", a take off of Lowtax's book "MY TANK IS FIGHT".
Diamond is full of these comments, two things that made me laugh are when you save after doing lots of stuff and it says "saving lots of data" (like i needed to know) and this guy says "you dont want to look like a noob" although i cant remember the context...ahhhh good to know pokemon still manages to amuse me after all this time.
I'm waiting for one of the Gym Leaders to say "You Have No Chance To Survive".
Or perhaps "Nincada Stole My Bike!".
i found it funny that i was described as 'nihilistically cool' for not nicknaming my pokemon. such a big word for a kids game! and i love how team galactic talk...very 'robotic'.
It's still funny. And "599 US Dollars" has actually gotten MORE funny over time.
The localisation in these games is great!
I agree, it is definately not funny anymore... people just end up embarassing themselves when they try.
It's kinda like the "chuck norris" jokes. I mean, those were funny, two years ago. People need to realise, they really really aren't funny anymore.
