Anyone who's been reading this blog for the past year and has the ability to retain Kotaku editor trivia may know that I was consumed by free Flash game Desktop Tower Defense for some time. So, when Dylan Cuthbert of Q-Games reveals that PixelJunk Monsters is a PlayStation 3 game in the same vein, I'm forced to add funds to my Wallet in anticipation. He profiles his company's new PlayStation Network release on SCEA's official blog, featuring a batch of soft, snazzy 2D screenshots and details on what makes PixelJunk Monsters unique. Was this game around before Warcraft 3?
Wow, the number 1 time waster of all time! I gotta say, I am jealous as hell. Tower Defense in all its iterations is one of the greatest little strat games ever.
woot TD FOR PS3!!
Have to admit that I'd love for that to come to the 360...but then again they would overprice it and I probably wouldn't buy it...
@Mogs: I'm pretty certain that that Warcraft III tower defense game was one of the first of this semi-genre. Lots of tower defense games have been made since.
Tower Defense without mazing = failure. I'm assuming those trees are preplaced. If not, sorry.

New GTA IV screen shoots. Check them out, they are awesome.
The game supports cooperative play (which I think is a first in a tower-defense type game?) and crisp full-HD 1080 at 60hz.
First day BUY....
wtf happened to Castle Crashers?!
Am I the only one who's wondering that?
I hope not...
@Pheonix2og: The earliest I've seen are the Starcraft maps. Does anone know who actually was first? Who invented this (sub)genre?
@Moonshadow101:
Yes, the trees are pre-placed.
It took years, but I'm finally over tower defense. Back to Minesweeper!
@Capt-Fury-: First co-op in a tower-defense game? Starcraft custom maps? They're cool. And a billion years old.
@MagnusGman: Nothing happened. It was pushed into 2008 back in February or something, and an 11ish-person studio doesn't have the biggest advertising budget.
@Krytha:
Im using a quote from Dylan..the head of Q games
the reason for my comment was more on the full-HD 1080 at 60hz thing....
I hope it's good
Okay, so it's a pet peeve of mine now, but everyone knows that preemptively adding funds to their PSN wallet is a waste compared to keeping it empty when purchasing so the exact amount of the purchase is automatically added to the wallet, right?
Nice for PS3 owners... I hope they bring that to portables... like my DS.
Then I'll be doomed.
I'd like more of these PSN only games to be remote playable on the PSP (like High Stakes Poker is).
Pretty Please.
@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: They technically are bringing it to portables. The PSP.
From the Playstation Blog
"The game supports cooperative play (which I think is a first in a tower-defense type game?) and crisp full-HD 1080 at 60hz. Also, the soundtrack is unique and original.. quite weird and ambient though, a style not many people have heard before.
We also support PSP remote play and it is probably one of the first games that supports this really well - ie. it is totally playable through your PSP, even at low bandwidths.
Oh, don't forget dual-shock 3 support too, for those really early adopters out there.
Yep...my bad...it is REMOTE PLAY enabled...so, basically 2 games for the price of one...loving it!
dude, you just made my day.
@el_gordo: Im almost positive this concept began as the mod for the "craft" games. Loved td... played it almost as much as the main game in wc3.
wow warcraft 3 goood times... i played that for hours straight.... really got me hooked on the genre..btw do you guys who have played it on wc3 remember how there would always be some noob who would use the arrows towers instead of the rapid firing golems and vampires? that always pissed me off since it was a team game and i would always lose cause of them
Can't wait to play this bad boy of a game. Has to be loads better than PixelJunk Racers. I was unimpressed by the demo of that game.
I played TD's on Warcraft 3 for hundreds of hundreds of hours. Hope this is as good.
@23albanian: Which TD? There's only about 7k different TD's, each with different strategies.
TD! WOo, most addicting genre of gaming to me, this is a must buy if it turns out well.
Just want to give you the head's up, I hear one of the senior game projects coming out of Digipen this year is a stand-alone, highly customizable Tower Defense game. With the ability for user defined towers, levels and creeps.
Not any official announcement or anything, just a heads up for all you TD fans.
diggin the screen shot there. never played a TD game. i hear the kids love them. which was the first? warcraft 3? pipe dreams? rampart?
Not sure i like the "side view" direction they took but it looks nice graphically and tower defence games are always fun. I remember that was all i played at one time on warcraft 3. Another nice title for PSN.
I'm I the only one that hope some dev/publisher picks up DOTA?
That game is so addicting.
THe first was SC o_O....
@Klashe: oohh dont you worry, ima make a dota for the wii when i become a dev BWHAHAH... that and a tower defense and etc etc allthsoe goodies from SC and WC3 games :D
And im quite sure this game wont be up to par with WC3 or SC standards. the reason it was so obsessively good there was the loads of variations.
and so many user created styled maps... :P
honestly this would be perfect for the DS. use the touch screen to setup towers, lay them out, and even design your own maps. online multiplayer-ability, oh. jesh. i wish they would make it for the ds.
Ok, excuse my French, but you absolute mother fucker.
I am now addicted to Desktop Tower Defense after following your link, and so is a friend of mine after I showed it to him.
