It's also not going to come out any time soon and will could potentially make you sterile (I swear I read that somewhere!). The analyst folks at Merrill Lynch spell nothing but gloom and doom for Sony's attempt at a Spring 2006 console launch. They note that "it's now clear that the box is prohibitively expensive to make", citing an $800 (or $900, depending on whose math you prefer) bill of materials for Sony, which may force a 6-to-12 month delay. Ouch!
So, why so much? ML & Co. peg the price for a Cell chip at 230 American big ones, with the Blu Ray drive pushing it over the top at 350 smackers. Yikes!
On top of that, a PS3 delay could impact software sales industry wide as much a 5%. Oh, the financial pain!
I'm itching to get my hands on a PS3, but I may have to just keep scratching that itch, at least until we hear more from Kutaragi and the PS3 Kids.
