The NPD Group has released hardware sales figures for the month of June, with the Nintendo DS and Wii crushing the competition with a combined sales of over 943,000 units. Sony's PlayStation 2 and PSP showed very well, selling around a quarter million units each—PS3, notsomuch. Here are the NPD hardware sales figures for June, including Game Boy Advance and Xbox 360 numbers.
- Nintendo DS - 561,900
- Wii - 381,800
- PSP - 290,100
- PlayStation 2 - 270,700
- Xbox 360 - 198,400
- Game Boy Advance - 109,400
- PLAYSTATION 3 - 98,500
Update: Please note that the earlier figure of 230,100 unit sales for the PSP has been corrected.
Total hardware sales for the month, industry-wide were $398.6 million, up 34% from the previous year. That doesn't include an impressive $161.3 million for video game accessories, which was up 58% from June 2006.
The only downward trend in the hardware business was in relation to portable gaming hardware which dipped 6% from the previous year to $130.6 million in sales.
In 2007, the video game industry has seen $2.3 billion in hardware sales alone, a huge increase of the $1.37 billion in hardware sold at the same point last year.
We'll have software sales information up soon, with reaction from hardware manufacturers shortly. In the meantime, start making your stock sales/purchases and trolling choices now.

My Nintendo stock shot up AGAIN today. Now I see why. :)
man this ps3 gba war is exciting
Wow, the 360 sold 100,000 more units than the PS3?
Iwata pic: Come into the fold, my children. The light of both DS screens shall guide you.
Wow only a hundred short of a full 100,000 more 360 then ps3 sold.
Way to go MS, now will see how ps3 sales increase in july with that temporary price drop.
Remember that this was a 5 week period.
Believe it or not, PS3 sales were actually down this month. In a previous month, they were selling 20500 per week (82,000 for the month). In June (5 week period), they sold 19,700 per week.
I suspect they will increase for July since they returned to the $499 price point.
I think you might have got ps3 and 360 mixed up.
Even more proof that PS3 came out too early. I should start a folder.
@Neon: They were outsold be the PSP.. That has to be a joke.
@mandlebaum123: More like a file cabinet.
Price drop started in July, right?
i wonder what effect the price drop will have. maybe an increase as large as 50% next month?
Yes, next month should see a PS3 increase. The price drop was in July BANBANGBLAH.
So Nintendo owns half of 2007.
Poor PS3..even the GBA beat em this round. Maybe that price cut will give them some love next month.
July numbers will be the real interesting figures. The PSP is making a good showing, but the real surprise for me is how well the PS2 still sells despite it being, you know, on the downslope. The same goes for the GBA.
Its funny that PS2 sales almost top PS3 and XBox 360 sales combined.
Sony should have never bothered with PS3 tbh, PS2 is still top dog imo. Selling that many consoles...jeez the thing is ancient.
Yes thanks to the Price Drop PS3 will finally triumph in July...over the GBA
After IGN the PSP actually sold 290 000 units not 230000.
I guess the PS3 can now start gaining ground... on the GBA.
Wow, the PoS3 is outsold by absolutely *anything*, even the vintage Gameboy Advance! *rofl*
Outsold nearly 6:1 by the DS, 4:1 by the Wii, close to 3:1 by the PS2, 2:1 by the X360, and even the Gba sold over 10,000 units more than it! Now *that's* unpopular.
I should seriously consider buying Nintendo stock.
The price drop will show an increase in PS3 sales. By how much? who knows, looking to see if it actually sells beyond the 360.
Sales will have to more than double from the price drop if they wanna beat the 360 in July.
Personally, this is just my opinion. But the PS3 and Xbox 360 are for dinosaurs. It seems to be a casual market now a days. It's sad. But that's the way it is. I don't think games like Legend of Zelda, Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid have that much power.
It reminds me of the MGS4 trailer where Snake talks about the new face of war. I think that reflects gaming and many hardcore gamers ideas about Nintendo . I'm not saying that it's a good thing or bad thing that Nintendo is aiming at the casual market. I just think many feel a little frustrated, betrayed and maybe abandoned.
Personally, I'm fine with casual games. I'm fine with casual gamers. I wish Nintendo would throw us a little meat here and there. But this is the new face of gaming. Again, I'm fine with it. If it helps gaming expand, go for it.
But what about us? The hardcore gamers that pride our selves on skill and achievements. I spent hours playing Devil May Cry 3. I died alot. I loaded even more. And eventually I gave up and started playing WoW... That's not the point! The point is is that we're part of a dieing breed. /dramaoff
I'm not surprised that the GBA still sells wellish, I buy more GBA games than DS ones for my DS...
@Iberianpower:
Sooo you are gonna believe IGN over NPD?
There's something poetic about how the 360 sales are are almost identical to the PS3 sales apart from that extra digit.
@Samos42: "Sales will have to more than double from the price drop if they wanna beat the 360 in July"
PS3 sales will more than double in July. There has been a huge increase in PS3 sales since the price cut.
Will it be enough to overtake 360 sales? It will be close.
Only time will tell.
These figures seem really coincidental to say the list. O well i don't care much about hardware sales just wanted to put my two sense in about that no to sure what the ndp is anyways.
@Krytha: LOL, a great comment for a great pic!
It seems like USA is following the same pattern as Japan - DS and Wii on the top, PS2 and PSP in the middle, and 360 and PS3 on the bottom (except in Japan PS3 outsells 360).
I wonder if this pattern will change around the holidays? I'll be tuning in to find out!
the Nintendo Holy Empire? ain't it the truth.
@NotSoCool: Iunderstand where you're coming from. I don't want to play gimped versions of hardcore games just so my mom can play it too without the effort it originally took to master the games. If a gamer doesn't have the patience to learn a character in VF5 or tactics in R:FoM then let them play Mario Party (as an example). The answer isn't watered down versions of hardcore games. Hardcore games aren't meant for the masses just simply because everyone CANT play them. Thats why they're hardcore. Perfect example....Wipeout Pure or any Wipeout or F-zero at the highest speeds on the sickest tracks. Only the elite need apply. end rant
@Striderhayasa: Only the elite need apply
You're why I hate gamer culture.
@DNess: NPD is a market research firm. They track the sales of a whole lot of stuff, to give market analysis to their customers.
They are trustworthy, these numbers are the best you are going to get to track what is and is not selling well. But well is a sort of relative term.
@NotSoCool: "But the PS3 and Xbox 360 are for dinosaurs. "
And the Wii is for kiddies and old folks in retirement homes. Its ancient 2001, XBOX 1 technologgy is not going to last, especially as more Amercans buy HDTV's. Already 48% of new TV's sold in America are HDTV units.
"It seems to be a casual market now a days. It's sad. But that's the way it is."
The only advantage the Wii has right now is a low price. Nothing wrong with the PS3 that a low price for the mass market won't cure.
Already PS3 sales have doubled merely from a $100 price cut to a still very espensive $500.
As PS3 and 360 prices fall, their sales will rocket up, whle the dated technology of the Wii sends sales plummeting.
The secod half of 2007 sales figures will be quite different from the first half of 2007, and 2008 will be quite a lot different from 2007.
@Striderhayasa: Atleast you understand. It's not that we hate casual gamers. It's just that we've played games for years and play for a thrill. We play to test ourselves and display our 1337 skills to our weaksauce counter part.
@baberg: Don't hate gamer culture.. Hate Hollywood.. It sucks. He's not saying anything negative. But hardcore games are what we love. There are the elite in everything. Don't take away are bragging rights. A game of golf is all a old racist white man has.
The 7 year old PS2 continues to sell 270,000 units a month and shows no sign of slowing down. Amazing.
The PS2 is going end up selling over 150 million units worldwide.
@SteveRayburn: I hope you're right. But I don't know if people want to put the effort in.
RUH-OH. Don't really care about the Nintendo hardware selling, 'cause that's a given, but I think the most interesting thing about this sales chart is that it's the first week the 360 has outsold the PS3 in Japan-- at least to my knowledge. Ouch...that's really gotta hurt.
@y2kenjination:
Eeer, change "week" to "month"
@y2kenjination:
This has Japan numbers?
@y2kenjination: These are North America numbers.
Just out of curiosity, why would anyone playing for hardcore, complete skill based gaming play on consoles at all? An overwhelming majority of professional gaming occurs on PCs, specifically with FPS games Counter Strike and Star Craft, among others.
It's funny, because I view the PS3/360 as "less skilled" in precisely the same way I view the Wii. Just a different perspective. If you aren't playing professionals -- who are, you know, real people -- you aren't involved in high skill gaming. Perhaps "mid-skill" would be appropriate for most PS3/360 games.
@Kotaku:
Shouldn't the PSP be above the PS2 now, since you corrected it?
Speaking of overpriced ancient technology, why does the PS2 still cost more than the Gamecube? From everything I've read the PS2 is not as capable of a machine, and it certainly has economy of scale going in its favor.
So when are we going to see the $99 PS2?
I heard Nintendo was considering a price drop of the GBA in response to the PS3 price cut in order to maintain its sales advantage.
I kid I kid.
next two months will be hard for ps3 even with price drop, X360 will be shifting a bunch of consoles with the release of Halo 3 come September.
PS3 numbers will be huge for July. I know a lot of people who were, like me, waiting for the first price drop or a nut-pinch maneuver. Sony did good and positioned themselves for both. Not only did they drop the price $100 but they also aren't going to make any more hardware backward-compatibility versions of the system. Total nut-pinch maneuver that forced me to play my hand and buy a PS3.
@SomeRandomGuy:
Whoops.
/Should really learn to read more carefully, rather than simply glancing over articles. Thanks for the heads up...-_-;
Well, if these are NA numbers, then no surprise here...although it's kinda sad that the PS3's getting outsold by the GBA (in Japan, too).
@SteveRayburn:
Don't kid yourself, game sales show that people don't care about graphics, top selling games are far from being graphical powerhouses, even on their own systems
@rayburne
Aren't you the one that totally got it wrong on all your pumped up predictions of the 360 beating the PS3 in Japan on the back of Trusty Bell? Yeah, I thought I recognized your prediction style. Maybe you should quit while you're behind.
You say,
"The 7 year old PS2 continues to sell 270,000 units a month and shows no sign of slowing down."
yet somehow you also cotend that
The wiis "ancient 2001, XBOX 1 technologgy is not going to last"
Contradict much?
You seem to think its great that the PS2 has lasted so long with outdated technology (much worse than Wii) yet you are completely sure that the Wii will fail in mere months because of its outdated tech. I wish I could be as smart as you.
As for me, the PS2 success makes perfect sense and only goes to support the idea that the Wii might just continue to do well despite being the weakest hardware this gen. Somehow, the weakest hardware always sells the most. I wonder if it will be different this gen. It's not looking like it from where I'm standing. Then again, I was silly enough to think that Trusty Bell was not going to push 360 past the PS3 in Japan, so what do I know?
I am so sick of the term 'hardcore'. It's a load of utter rubbish. I can't express properly the idiocy of continuing to use it in the context of games. GAMES!
It smacks more of the continued erosion of vocabulary of the general populace than it does the category of game being discussed.
Here's an idea. Instead of the age 12-35 male demographic calling itself 'h
