I know, I know, I'm mixing my movie metaphors here, but it was appropriate. I am a big fan of Pirates of the Caribbean dating back to endless summer trips to Disney World where I would ride that and The Haunted Mansion as many times as I could while we were there. Thankfully, the POTC movies turned out way better than that HM piece of crap with Eddie Murphy or I wouldn't even have a passing interest in the game.
This trailer features a cut scene from the upcoming POTC: At World's End wherein Davey Jones calls the Kraken to wreak havoc on a pirate vessel. Say what you will about cut scenes, but this one just looks incredible, in particular the character models for Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly. They are much more realistic and actually look like the people they are supposed to be unlike the models in a certain web slinging game that shall remain nameless. Suffice it to say I am looking forward to checking this game out despite my rabid cephalo-phobia.
Useless factoid: Did you know that behind the digital octopus face, the actor who performed the role of Davey Jones is in fact Bill Nighy, the actor who played Shaun's stepfather in Shaun of the Dead?

Not impressed. Im starting to get really tired of these half-assed movie licenses. The games feel so incomplete and rushed.

He was also in, and best at, Slartibartfast in Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.
What the? Are they just coming out with this game now?
@Rukusa:
I don't know when this one is coming out, so I could be wrong, but... Isn't it incomplete? Couldn't that have something to do with why it feels incomplete?
Anyway, I've not played any of the other POTC games. I love the movies, and if the reviews for this are good, I might check it out, but my default reactions is that, sure, the visuals are good, but how's the gameplay? I'm not inherently excited about this game, at least until I start hearing things about whether or not it's any fun to play.
I just had a Day of the Tentacle flashback. XD
As others have said, the appeal of this game hinges largely on it's ability to deliver quality gameplay. There are very, very few movie licenses where the "feel" of the movie has transitioned nicely. I personally think "Chronicles of Riddick" is the most successful game in this vein.
So it should come as no surprise that overall, gamers are going to be skeptical about this. I guarantee a number of younger kids will buy this or have it bought for them, but the experienced gamer will likely take the time to find out "is it worth it" before they even really look into it. That's the approach I'm taking. Pretty screens are nice, but gameplay is the true determinant of a game's worthiness.
@Link_the_Collector:
just now? the movie isn't even out for another 2 weeks.
Spider-Man 3 the game came out the same day as the movie.
Oh and I forgot to say that the game spans both the 2nd and 3rd movie, but its title is the third movie and I would guess more of the game would be spent on scenes from the 3rd movie.
Yeah actually I did know that about Bill Nighy. Because ever since I saw Hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy I had a man crush on him. He's also in Hot fuzz, though much more briefly.
There was a little to much Johnny-Depp-O-face for my tastes.
Am I the only one to think of Clash of the Titans reading that headline?
You thought it was good? Maybe your standards have just been lowered without you knowing it after seeing the spiderman 3 models.
@cskozmo:
Ya, he was the Chief Officer or whatever its called in Hot Fuzz. But the character models definetly look better than Spiderman 3.
Is it just me or did (almost) nothing happen in the clip?
Too bad that isn't his voice, and this is a horrible clip.
Horrible int he fact nothing happens, horrible in terms of visuals, and horrible in terms of context.
We saw the film, it was 1000x better then this clip.
@Qwizatblah: Too much or too little?
@ApeofGod:
I think the visuals are actually pretty good, if only because they are well animated.
Yeah I'm pretty sure God of War 2 already did this.
UFAIL@POTC
Ill tell you what, Visually it Kicks the Spiders Ass
WOW! Those charecter model's looked so real. If I didn't know any better, I'd say those were the actual people. They were so convincing, that they didn't even need expressions.
I think that Johnny Depp and Davy Jones(played by whoever) were portrayed most accurately.
My dad met Bill Nighy. He was doing some voiceover work or something for a project he was on. Apparently he did not have a tentacle beard. I was disappointed.
"Useless factoid: Did you know that behind the digital octopus face, the actor who performed the role of Davey Jones is in fact Bill Nighy, the actor who played Shaun's stepfather in Shaun of the Dead?"
I may of just gained a slight interest in the film. -slight-
@Deusfaux: haha exactly what I thought too!
Man, a Clash of the Titans game would rock. God of War wouldn't be worthy of shining the shoes of this title.
As for this game, well I've seen gameplay and it looks like a yawn fest, but the graphics certainly look smart and you put pirates in anything and you have a winner. Jack Sparrow is also the second best pirate behind Guybrush Threepwood, so I might give it a rent.
"Did you know that behind the digital octopus face, the actor who performed the role of Davey Jones is in fact Bill Nighy, the actor who played Shaun's stepfather in Shaun of the Dead?"
Who doesn't?
Yes, I knew that.
+5 fanboy points for me.
If there isn't some Elizabeth/Tentacle love in the third movie I'll be disappointed.
Ummm, there was only voice actor... You can tell this game was rushed. Oh well, at least the movie will be good.
man... i disagree.. i mean, sure it was better than spiderman, and maybe im just too picky, but those characters looked really awful to me. and the animation wasnt impressive with those characters to me either.
although for last gen stuff, still pretty good, but i expect more for the ps3 and 360.
johnny depp's characte animation looks seriously gay. other than that this looks awesome.
Well at least these guys did a hell of a lot better on the character designs than Spiderman 3. Johnny Depp didn't look very good though.
I'm British you fool, we know EVERYTHING about Bill Nighy.
Wow, with everyone trashing this thing left and right i'm almost ashamed to stand up and say that looked really nice. =] Maybe my standards are lower?
Don't forget Nighy was Slartibartfast in the Hitchhiker's Guide movie. As poor as some of the movie was, Nighy was perfect for that character.
This is obviously a cut-scene, but if it's done in the in-game engine, then I give it the thumbs-up. Sure, there's Uncanny Valley a-plenty, but we're not QUITE at photorealistic graphics just yet. And this is pretty danged close.
Davy Jones does look very very good in this cut-scene.
Could just be me though, as Im still recovering from playing Spiderman 3 for the first time last night and seeing what can only be referred to as the genetic abominations that are the character models there.
@blacksamurai87: What do you mean there was only one voice actor?
@MrPerson: This is the ingame graphics. The game is gorgeous.
Bit of advice peeps if you are wanting to buy this and have the option of 360 or PS3 versions.. Avoid the PS3 version like the plague. 360 was the lead platform during development and they've had to cut out a ship-full of content on the ps3 version just to get it running at a barely passable frame rate.
Don't ask me how I know this, I know people....
No content has been cut from the PS3 - but the 360 was the lead platform, so naturally it will be a slightly stronger package.
They looked great... Only Sparrow gave out that "puppet-with-strings" feel
Bill gets everywhere. The problem is, this leads to him choosing some incredibly dire films. Like Underworld, where he played the ancient vampire geezer.
@Rayk2099:
Think what you will, but the PS3 looks like utter garbage in comparison
PS3 version, i should add
@Eastwood:
Yeah, he's basically the British equivalent of Michael Caine.
@Lightbunny:
I thought Michael Caine was British...?
@Lightbunny: You do realise Michael Caine is British... right? lol
Of course. I threw that out there as a way to test how clever I could be.
It looks like I'll be telling knock-knock jokes from here on out.
@RJG:
That movie was pure win. I loved every second of it. You are a blasphemer.
@Lightbunny:
Maybe you meant he's a british Samuel L. Jackson? Now THAT dude is in everything. EVERYTHING.
@NecronomiconUK: It does look worse, but there is no content difference between the two versions.
@Narsil:
Samuel L.'s good-to-crap movie ratio is much higher than Michael Caine's. A simple comparison of shark movies proves this to be true.
Chronicles of Riddick was the only case I know of where the game was actually BETTER than the movie.
This... Looks... Bland, uninspired and... Meh.
Did anyone here play the "Morrowind-POTC" game Bethesda made back then?
@ everyone saying johnny depp model doesn't look very good, go to game trailers and watch the other clips that are just GAMEPLAY of the captain jack model, I think it might be some of the best animation i've ever seen in a character model, All you people saying it's shit get a clue name a game that's done better...?????
My gripe with Bill Nighy is that he "slums" it too often.
He has the acting ability and gravitas to portray prime ministers and members of Parliament and has taken good roles in The Constant Gardener and Notes on a Scandal. Nevertheless, he consistently winds up in stuff like this.
It's a little bit disturbing how people nowadays are so critical about the graphical quality of games. So what will happen when the "next-next gen" (seriously, stop calling current generation consoles "next gen". We don't live in the future.) comes? "Man, did you see Halo 4? It looks just like Halo 3... it's soooo last gen." We are pretty much getting to the peak of graphical quality. Are games gonna get any better than Gears, Crysis and all the other graphically impressive games coming soon?
