Remember when Phil Harrison said that the PS3 was unlikely to ship in two versions, because it just confuses people and Sony would never create confusion? That's just seeming increasingly adorable as E3 goes on and everyone continues to scratch their heads over Sony's muddled launch strategies.
Well, now Phil Harrison has another wacky quote under his belt, this time explaining that $499 PS3s will be identical in functionality to the $599... despite the fact that WiFi, HDMI and memory card support have been completely lopped off the cheaper model.
What we should be clear about is that the functionality is identical in both machines... It's just that the technical method of extracting audio and video from the devices is slightly different.
This, honest to god, is the greatest semantic argument we've seen outside of freshman philosophy class. For a second, we were unconvinced: missing WiFi and HDMI seem like pretty big hobblings of functionality. But then Harrison waved his magic wand and explained patiently that the lack of WiFi and HDMI aren't missing features, but merely different modes of data transportation!
