Phil Harrison Is Stuffing Blu-Ray Disc Full of Pre-Renders

Already, at our launch titles, we're getting up close to the 25GB limit that we have on our Blu-Ray discs this year. Next year we'll raise that to 50GB, and I'd expect that we'll be getting close to that in the fairly near future as well.

That's Sony's Phil Harrison attempting to address concerns that Blu-ray is being forced upon games for profit and funsies. Continuing, Harrison adds that "DVD is not sufficient capacity to power the kind of data consumption, or to feed the data consumption needs of Cell."

The PS3 Cell is a data hoover.

Phil (Philip? Or Phillip?) goes on to say how the PS3 game console needs Blu-ray for its 7.1 audio and 1080p movies built into the game. That's right, expect those 25GB discs fattened up with pre-renders. While we think pre-renders are oh so last gen, he thinks their aces.

I see nothing wrong with having non-interactive, full HD sequences as part of the game. That's all part of the production value and the experience that you get when you buy the game. I don't see that as a weakness at all.

Do you see what Phil is doing? He's not only attempting to validate Blu-ray format, but also the next nine Final Fantasy games for the PS3. Sneaky Phil.
