Play Game Boy, Lose Weight

For gamers looking to drop a few pounds, the Wii is the go to console. But, what about the Game Boy? Can it help you lose weight? It's not just pressing buttons as fast as possible to burn calories. Oh, no. It's about portable gaming acting as an appetite suppressant — much in the same way smoking does. A Weight Watchers online tip explains:

Pick up a Game Boy: Playing a handheld video game can squash a food craving, says Cynthia Sass, RD, a Tampa nutritionist and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. "When you start to visualize your craving you've already lost half the battle," she says. "A video game occupies your eyes, your hands and your mind," she explains.

Makes sense! Now, if only I could trade my DS Lite in for a Game Boy...

  • Hey I have an old gameboy, I can part with it I guess.

DEAL!!! *Shakes hand, pulls out the contract*

    Sign

  • I recently just bought a GBA Original to play all the classic hits.

    Ahhh... *Plays Pokemon Yellow*

  • I still got mine, even after trading off my library of games (except tetris and batman, they already had 'em). I could not part with the hardware itself.

No, it will stay where it is. Keeping company with my old Lynx and Gamegear.

  • Man someone tell that to subway Jared, who totally blasted games as the reason he got fat.

  • Wouldn't simply picking up the old gameboy would get you to lose weight anyway.

  • i don't know about gameboy but any good games make me not want to eat and just keep on playing...

not to mention movies, anime, and sleep....

guess your brain can overcome hunger when it's heavily occupied...

  • @Noodle93: I lost my Pokemon Yellow :( That was the last Pokemon I played. Ah, nostaliga.

  • @icepick314: I was going to say the same thing.

This really makes a lot of sense, I know it's true for me anyway. Playing games have caused me to miss a meal. Of course when I was playing WoW I'd miss meals, sleep, etc...

  • Gameboy is the generic term that nongaming sorts tend to use for a portable system.

Either that or Janelle Randazza, writer of the article is just a huge fan of Pokemon red, Tetris, and the hardest Zelda game ever.

  • @icepick314:

Definitely. Whenever I start playing a game, food becomes the last thing on my mind.

I guess Weight Watchers is finally figuring this out.

  • that would work for me except i do most of my unhealthy eating at work. and i don't think my boss would want me playing game boy.

  • Why does it have to be a portable gaming device?

  • Teehee! My mom's boss used a GameBoy to stop smoking.

  • Who here is one of those pretentious (is that the right word for this situation) asses that corrects people.

    "Hey, is that a Gameboy?"

"Uh, no, it's a Nintendo DS LITE! This one happens to be the Onyx model, stupid".

It's a Gameboy to the non-gaming public, from now on and forever, the same way all mp3 players are Ipods.

  • Can I say it's bullshit. It's bullshit. I know too many people who snack while playing games. C'mon, the fat, lazy gamer stereotype exists for a reason.

Excuse me, I'm gonna go do some push-ups.

  • Reading a book is another option to keep your mind of the food, and so is... masturbation. Anything, that keeps your eyes, hands and mind busy, she says.

Seriously, what a bunch of crap !

  • This definitely works. On weekends, when I do most of my gaming, I notice that I tend to eat less, and usually eat better. There's no way I'd stick my hand into a bag of greasy chips, or cheetos while playing, because it's messy and it'd get all over the controller or keyboard!

  • I dunno, Ive been playing my GameBoy since 1991 and Ive packed on a few more pounds than I would have liked. If anything, GameBoy does the opposite.

  • This is totally true! When my student loan ran out, I used my last few dollars to buy WoW time instead of food. I didn't notice how hungry I was because I was enthralled with the burning crusade! Lost like 20 pounds :P

  • @GospelX: I was thinking along the same lines as you.

I agree with the general idea of the article, but at the same time, it makes me bitter about other articles that have tried to blame video games for fattening kids up -- because the only reason they don't play enough sports clearly has to be all these video games, right? (Never mind the budget cuts going into P.E. programs)

If you're a kid and you play video games, it means you'll get fat because you're not playing football, but if you're a grown-up and you play video games, you'll get thin because you're not eating?

As a side-note: If you want to try what the article says, I recommend a DS Lite or a PSP: They're both so glossy and shiny, you'd never want to touch them with greasy fingers, ever. And in order to keep your fingers grease-free, guess what you have to avoid touching? Eh? Eh?

  • Or you could eat when you're hungry, just not fried garbage. The idea of replacing a meal with a session of gameboy or other activity is ridiculous to me... eating well and in portions should be encouraged instead.

Weight Watchers is a great way to keep pounds on and regain a shit ton when you go off your fascist diet.

  • @alb1221: They're not talking about replacing a meal, just beating a snack attack. One of the other tips in that article says to eat a handful of nuts.

And as you say in your post, eating well and in portions is the basic fundamental of the Weight Watchers program. Why you assume it's a "great way to keep pounds on" is beyond me. I wrote the Infendo article about this and have lost 90 pounds so far.

  • Wait a minute, JUST the original Game Boy or could it be any portable system?

  • I think there are two types of gamers: those who snack and those who don't.

I swear, if you give me World of Warcraft and a cold bottle of water, I will literally not eat all day.

Of course, there are those who will order a pizza, fritos, and a 2 liter of mountain dew and scarf down continously.

  • This isn't exactly news. I've known this since I was 12 and playing MGS until my mom got home.. then it was all "Did you do the chores?" "Uh... no." "Did you even eat lunch?" "Crap, i knew i forgot something..."

  • Hell, that happens to me on a regualr basis, and I'm a pretty athletic person. I'll be playing a game, surfing the web, or hanging out with friends and end up forgetting to eat. Then, I'll stop whatever I'm doing and will barely have enough energy to make a sandwich... though if you give me food while I'm doing whatever, I'll definitely scarf it down.

I actually have an original GameBoy in my room right now. Every time I look at it with that Pokemon Red cartrige in it, it reminds me of how much I need to get a DS.
