I've become attached to a bit of Nintendo trash.
For some reason, I kept forgetting to throw out the box that my review DS Lite was shipped in. Typically, this isn't really that big a deal, but as Penny Arcade pointed out, this isn't your typical box. Every time you open it, the square, white box erupts with a fanfare and flashing lights. I'm not sure how it works, but I suspect a light sensor.
After sitting around in my house for most of the month, the bit of PR fluffery started acting up. For seemingly no reason, the box would cut loose with a fanfare. At first it freaked me out. I'd be walking by the kitchen to get a glass of water and I'd hear the digital trumpets and spin around trying to figure out what the hell was going. Once I remembered the box and its little lights and sound, I'd go about my business. But over time, I started taking these random digital flourishes as a response to what I was actually doing. Perhaps, I thought, the box sees in me something that everyone else is missing.
I'd be typing up a story for the site, click on save and Dum, Da, Da, Daaaa; Da, dum, dum, da, da, da, daaaa, ,da da da daaaaa! I'd make a particularly well thought-out point to my 5-year-old son and Dum, Da, Da, Daaaa; Da, dum, dum, da, da, da, daaaa, ,da da da daaaaa!
I took to nudging the box when I felt I deserved a fanfare, doing particularly cool things within sight of the box in hopes of a little blast of trumpet. I even started talking to the thing when no one was around.
"Aw, come on, that totally deserved it," I'd say after tossing a crumpled up paper towel into the trash can or sliding across the kitchen's wood floor in my socks with a stack of dirty dishes balanced in my hands.
Recently, my box seems less enthusiastic. I'd like to think that's it's the batteries, but at night sometimes I secretly worry it's me
Nintendo should totally market this as the Nintendo BOX, they just need to work on the size and battery life. Or they could release it as is and in six months ship out the Box Lite.
