Gears of War Fact Sheet
"Gears of War," a Games for Windows title, features the amazing tactical action and multiplayer excitement found in the critically acclaimed "Gears of War" for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system that sold more than 3.5 million units, and a variety of all-new content, including three new multiplayer maps, a new multiplayer game type, Game Editor, five new campaign chapters and DirectX® 10 support.
"Gears of War" thrusts gamers into a deep and harrowing story of humankind's epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet.
With "Gears of War," Epic Games returns gamers to the massively scoped worlds, memorable characters, cooperative gameplay and hyper-realistic combat that gamers have come to expect from the franchise, plus a few new surprises.
Information: Epic Games Inc., based in Cary, N.C., and established in 1991, develops cutting-edge games and game engine technology for PC and console. The company has created multiple million-selling, award-winning titles in its Unreal® series. Its latest game, "Gears of War," broke sales records on Xbox 360, selling more than 3 million copies worldwide in the first 10 weeks and awarded overall Game of the Year for 2006 by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, Game Developers Choice Awards, GameSpot, GamePro and many others. Epic is also responsible for the Unreal Engine, the underlying technology for a wide range of games, including Console Game of the Year winner "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell™" by Ubisoft Entertainment; PC Gamer's Game of the Year "Deus Ex" from Ion Storm/Eidos; "America's Army: Special Forces" by the U.S. Army; and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (PC) by Electronic Arts Inc. Epic's Unreal Engine 3 is the current holder and three-time consecutive winner of Game Developer magazine's Front Line award for Best Game Engine. Frag-filled new content. "Gears of War" will feature locations that are unique to the franchise and the genre. Players will encounter all their favorite foes from the Xbox 360 version; however, these intense encounters will take place in some new environments and allow players to manipulate the new game modes and technology found only in the Games for Windows title. Boasting three new multiplayer maps, a new multiplayer game type, Game Editor, five new campaign chapters and DirectX 10 support, "Gears of War," will challenge and push the limits of the PC gaming experience and provide an unparalleled visual presentation.
Engaging and disturbing cinematic story. Movie-like cut scenes, cinematic camera moves and in-game storytelling bring the brutal, emotionally charged narrative to life. Gamers control Marcus Fenix and his fire team as they pit advanced technology against the overwhelming and horrific Locust Horde.
Unmatched online gaming. "Gears of War" will tap into the power of Games for Windows — LIVE to deliver online matchmaking for its Gold account members. The service will enable gamers around the world to connect via their PCs, allowing players to experience individualized matchmaking, view player statistics, earn player Achievements, customize games and create personalized profiles.
New Game Editor. The game will also feature the all-new Game Editor, guaranteeing new user-generated content in the future. The "Gears of War" community will be able to tap its endless creative potential to develop an unlimited number of user-created levels through complete access to the Unreal Editor. Using the new engine, players can now import custom artwork into the engine, create particle systems, scripted encounters, cinematics and more.
Astounding visuals in next-generation gaming. "Gears of War" ushers in the next generation with incredible visuals, pushing DirectX 10 visual designs and bringing out the smallest details in the largest battle. Gamers experience a rich, dynamic world with a supreme level of detail. Characters come to life with unbelievable model quality and a physics-integrated animation system that has them truly reacting intelligently to events unfolding around them.
Hyper-realistic and intense combat. In "Gears of War" the battlefield is a lethal place — to foolishly stand out in the open is to invite an untimely demise. To survive, gamers must employ strategy, take cover using the interactive and dynamic environments, and suppress the enemy with blind fire, using their weapons and teammates to outwit and outfight their terrifying enemies.

it's times like these i wish i had a half decent PC
This is only one of the many reasons PC gaming is the best form of gaming in the universe.
@Combinator:
1. There's only three other major forms of gaming platforms, not much competition.
2. Writing off the entire universe is a bit arrogant.
3. All of those reasons don't matter, when it's not worth the money.
Heh no.
I bought Gears of War a while ago.
I didn't get past the second level before getting tired of it.
Then I tried multiplayer...
Haven't played it since, and I wish I could sell it somewhere.
@Combinator:
@Karttikeya:
Pc Elitism Vs. Console Elitism .... Did I spell that right.
@Karttikeya:
ITT we take all comments very seriously.
I'm so glad this game (along with Bioshock and others) are on the PC. Now I don't have to buy an Xbox 360. I can even use the 360 controller on it :D
once you've played through the story a few times (normal?-insane), the game doesn't look appealing even on a new platform. the multiplayer wasn't as awesome as i hoped it would be either, it was basically all dodging, point black frags/sawing ppl.
blank* wtb edit.
You know what? I don't care. This'll be Gears Of War Extended Edition, but so what? 360 owners have been able to get to know Marcus and his vendetta for quite a while now. So what if PC users get a couple extra chapters? Haven't they waited long enough for this story? I'm not 'hatin' on the 360 community, I've got a shitty PC, the 360 is my main gaming console and I only use my comp for WoW as of now, but really; Those of you who complain about extra content on Windows contra the 360 should really get a grip on the technical differences between the two platforms and consider the time spent developing the new material ready for release.
If this all comes off as incoherent gibberish, then I'm excused, since I'm severely drunk right now, and merely writing off my wraiths along with this fine red wine (or shitty red wine. it's red wine, that's all I know).
@rickyyo: better then watching console fanboys yelling at each others, I say us console gamers should unite and fight the PC tards but know one listens to me...
"Summerize"? Does that mean to make something more "summery"?
@Mienvard:
I was actually going to ask you if you were drunk, before seeing that last paragraph :P
Man from a developers standpoint, Ill be looking foward to seeing what kind of maps people pump out. Since some of the best works come more from the "community" than developers. :D
So, they made it work with XP and not ruin it by making it for Vista only?
@Mienvard: please man I have models on my hard drive right now, well not this PC that would put the in game models to shame! Fully normal mapped! with animations ready! Hell I think I'm actually going to make most of my toy collection for these next batch of PC games mods and hell some porn stars while I'm at it I guess since I can't possible do that in a real game...LOL. You can not do that on a console. Actualy most of the guys working on your console games are breed on good ol PC modes...
oh sorry guy your drunk! Thats cool... I expect big things to be made once this comes out. It may not be this game yet the next wave of PC games is going to produce some heavy creative competition. this is needed very badly right now in game graphics on any HD platform. People rely on realism too much right.
Question though,
Is co-op still part of the game?
@Witzbold: Hell most of my appeal from the Ut serious was actually in the first batch of maps made in the original game. Those where some of the best MP maps I've ever had a chance to kill people in! Hell that what we really want!
@Someguy925: If it's not then a mod will be made...LOL
They can boast all these bells and whistles all they want. I'm buying it to escape from the x-box live (as Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation fame so elegantly put it) "bunch of hooting dickholes".
@Runna: Ive always loved the CMPs (Community Map Packs) that Epic gathers together and releases, or the fan sites that do them. Since goddamn some of the shit the fans make just blows away the originals. Even Cliffy B at times is highly impressed with what comes out. Then I assume he goes and kidnaps them to be added to "horde" working in Epic`s fortress of doom!
While the PC IS definitely the best gaming platform, Gears of War surely doesn't make it so.
This is just what the game would have been ORIGINALLY if it would've been on PC first. No big deal really, there's nothing here PC gamers haven't had for years.
Sounds awesome. Now if only i had the hardware to run it...
Sounds pretty good. Now if only I had the hardware to run it...
crysis , GoW , some MMO's ... all using DX10
i think it's time to give in to temptation and upgrade to a DX10 vga T_T
god i cannot begin to express how much i hate how pc's become obsolete so quickly lately :S
"WOOT! finally got my hands on a 7950 GTX!!"
few weeks later ... a series 8 card is released... now you buy a series 8 card and a NV9x chip VGA is one the way in the next couple of months
sucks sucks sucks T_T
@mva5580:
Except that PC gaming has quite possibly the biggest Shit to Good ratio in software? Or that it costs more than most people who CAN afford it even feel like paying for it? I certainly don't hate on PC gaming. I always point console graphics whores towards the PC market. But really, being a few steps behind in graphics is a small price to pay for reliably great software.
@BrainofJTD: my last PC PC upgrade was solely for Oblivion ... now at least 3 or 4 games coming in the next couple of months are gonna force me to abother upgrade :S
did you guy's understand the underlying fact.." This is Games for Windows" Sounds like a template. You would think marketing execs would have gone past repeating the point they want to get across. We know already just give us the info we need. Fucking PR teams. Sorry i had to vent. Also since i don't own an xbox360 anymore i guess i will buy this "games from windows"
Yeah, I'm looking to unload my copy of Gears. I got maybe 2 weeks out of it before I got so bored with it I never want to put it in my 360 again. It was great beating it twice in co-op, but that's more than enough of that one. MP is pretty bad really.
anyone know if they had released the requeriments?
Heh, I was expecting to play Gears to see how it is in full, but I didn't even think that what I'll be playing will be the superior version of what the Xboxers got.
I upgraded to 8800 for Bioshock so I'm ready to roll.
Hah.
I liked gears because it wasn't so twitch rush hairline accuracy oriented like halo.
You used... tactics, not corpsehumping.
I cannot wait to play this. GoW for the PC is one of the main reasons I actually plunked down some cash to get a maching that could run it. I guess I could have spent a lot less and just got a 360 but, meh, i'm not a fan of the machine.
@Combinator:
console gamers: least we have chicken...
@Hoxie: I dunno bout tactics, since it was mostly turned into camp shottie matches. Where one side or both just camps with shotties and waits for the other to come around a corner and point blank them.
There wasnt too much tactics in gears, asides from staying in a group = death to the lone wolves. But that works for any shooter really.
I'm going to buy it eventually, and I'll enjoy it. But they really need to stop pretending this game has a story.
Man, it was pretty hard knowing that as a 360 owner, I'd be missing out on a whole Act from the PC version and 4 new maps but a map editor/maker? That's freakin' killin' me. I really hope it's one of those complicated ones I could never use, then it wouldn't be so bad.
I'll be curious to see if they've fixed all of the glitches in the PC version. It would be embarrassing to see the chainsaw glitch (in its numerous permutations) make its way to the PC.
@Witzbold: This is exactly why they should of had movable pushable objects with cover to keep thing out of the lame stalemate area.
Also too this is a normal map test for most modders.. well the true test for most as we've had normal mapping for a while.
I predict ram sales will go thur the roof...LOL you need 4 gigs to really get in the normal map creation game! I'm cool with this game as it is always cool to show up people unofficially..LOL J/K they got some good work in there yet I think they are a little conservative for their own good...
Good to see my hometown appear in a press release. Anyways, I'll definitely be getting this. I've been working on a series of tutorials for the UE3 engine, so I'm going to go crazy on the editor when it comes out.
The only fact about the PC version I want to read is that theyre porting the extra content to the 360. I use a mac and this is making me sad.
Whats the point in getting it now... everyone who really wanted to play it has already beat it by now.
That's a lot of extras coming to the PC version.
@kagebutsu: Yeah, and I bet a lot will want to play this version too, the game really needs the new content.
So I have to ask, will this work on XP or is it Vista Exclusive?
@kagebutsu: mouse and keyboard is enough for me to buy it now.
really i wish microsoft would do more concurrent releases. Halo 3 and GoW are great games but as an avid FPSer i can't stand controling them without a mouse and keyboard. i would actually prefer for games to come out on the PC as the graphics are the best, customizability is usually higher, and i get a selection of control schemes.
@ztella: Completely agree. If Microsoft allowed me to use a mouse and keyboard I would have bought a 360 already. But they don't so fuck the 360. Maybe when its $200.
I've seen enough Gears on 360 to last me a lifetime, I played through it a couple of times, and gave online more time than it deserved. It just failed to offer anything new to the FPS genre. I'll be leaving it alone when it comes to PC and concentrating on playing something more interesting and innovative, like solitaire.
I think this game will suck on the PC without the 360 controller, due to the Roll/Run button needing serious access to freedom on the move buttons. If you're gonna get this, get a 360 controller too.
We had better see those new maps on the 360.
Will those new maps and campaign chapters be available on the 360?
