Rocking out with a big plastic guitar will soon no longer be purely the privilege of the console owning masses, as Aspyr announces an exclusive deal with Activision to develop and publish Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock for the PC and Mac platforms this fall. Not only does this open up the game to a whole new segment of players, but if you've got a nice gaming laptop it essentially makes this the first portable version of Guitar Hero. On top of all of the regular features of the game, Aspyr's version will allow PC and Mac users to battle against each other in online multiplayer, perhaps allowing us to settle the Mac versus PC debate once and for all in glorious rock combat! Bring it on!
ASPYR MEDIA ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH ACTIVISION TO BRING GUITAR HERO III: LEGENDS OF ROCK TO PC AND MACAUSTIN, TX Sept. 11, 2007 The rock gods have spoken, and gamers around the world will now be able to unleash their inner-rock star on two brand new platforms. Aspyr Media, in partnership with Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), today announced that the third iteration of the wildly popular Guitar Hero franchise, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, will be available to PC and Mac gamers for the first time ever this fall.
Being developed and published exclusively by Aspyr, the PC and Mac versions will match their console counterparts with explosive new content and features including a multiplayer action-inspired battle mode, grueling boss battles, a host of exclusive unlockable content and visually stunning rock venues. With more than 70 songs in the set list, and more original master tracks than ever before, players will be able to shred from many of the freshest and hottest artists today, along with many of the most popular rock songs ever recorded. Expanded online multiplayer game modes will also allow PC and Mac enthusiasts to rip head-to-head against players around the world and across either platform, raising the level of competition for true legendary rock status.
Working with such a wildly successful franchise and helping to strengthen an already powerful brand has us feeling like rock stars ourselves, only without the fame, money or musical talent, said Ted Staloch, Executive Vice President, Publishing for Aspyr. But even without Slashs chops, we still have what it takes to bring the best music game on the planet to PC and Mac gamers. Aspyrs expertise in developing and publishing for these platforms means that we will deliver a game that wails just as hard as it does on consoles but feels natural on this audiences chosen platform.
Providing the option for our fans to play Guitar Hero at their desk or on a laptop on the go is incredibly exciting, and were thrilled to now offer the ability to rock out literally anywhere and everywhere, said Dusty Welch, head of publishing at RedOctane. PC and Mac gamers can now shred as hard as their console counterparts do, and its a great opportunity to help promote musicianship and expand the growing number of Guitar Hero fans worldwide.
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on PC and Mac is rated T for Teen by the ESRB, and will be available this fall. For more information, please visit www.aspyr.com.

The piracy crew will be very happy with this, for sure.
very cool
Whoa, that's out of left field.
I'm going to take a swing and guess that it's going to use the same USB-based controller as the 360 version.
Excellent news. Now, finally, we'll be able to create and play custom tracks EASILY.
I'm already looking forward to Guitar Hero: Asian Kung Fu Generation Edition and Guitar Hero: the pillows Edition and Guitar Hero: My Favorite Songs Edition.
Wow, I hate to be negative, but this seems rather rediculous. Sure it opens up the franchise to a new audience, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone complaining about not being able to play GH on a computer. Besides, I bet a computer setup isn't the most fitting for Guitar Hero. I dunno, it just seems strange...
Also, while GH on a laptop would technically be 'portable', who in there right mind would carry around a plastic guitar peripheral, let alone play in public and risk looking like a dumbass.
@PMAvers: you read my mind.
Yeah, I'm curious if my wired USB 360 guitar would work on this.
Where is my comment?
omg, yea figures.
@chinesedentist: You can use the 360 guitar on the PC, which is used for Frets of Fire.
@Amuro1X: Hi dumbass who's looking forward to a portable party Guitar Hero lappy hookup here!
As long as ur not playing it on ur desktop sitting down then its grand, no need to be so stuffy about it. Laptop + tele (in any house) = Portable Party!
Hmm...this gives me hope that Rock Band will come to the PC.
I might get that if I ever get a laptop.
I'm still looking for a System of a Down song in the list....
Nice, wonder how much the bundled package will cost!
Anybody thinking BlueTooth wireless guitar other than me? That would seem the ideal way to work it into a typical PC/Mac setup, as most now either have it built in or can add it with a cheap dongle.
The custom track potential for this version means I have to get working on my HTPC immediately!
Awesome, awesome news. This was pretty much the last straw for me in getting rid of my 360, I don't need it anymore. All of the great games come out for PC (Bioshock, GTA, Guitar Hero, Madden, Oblivion, Gears of War, GRAW, etc) there is really no need for it anymore. My PC runs games very well and there's just no point to having the 360 after this.
My hope has always been that the more and more consoles become like PC's, these games will just get ported over because of similarity. Hopefully it's starting to become true! My 24" Dell LCD @ 1920 x 1080 suits me just fine for gaming.
WOAH.
Thats almost worth waiting for. That game is going to end up being modded to all hell with any type of song you can think of.
I might just have to keep an eye on that thing.
@Atheist Jew:
DEFINITELY.
I was originally going to pick this up for the PSTRIPLE, but now I'm opting for the PC version instead.
For all of the people who show up and complain that people should learn to play a real guitar, you guys need to wake up and understand that you're absolutely correct!
This has officially made the Wii version obsolete (and I'm saying this as a Wii fan). Even if you only have one console, the majority of folks have a PC. If I now have the option for the Wii version or the PC version (which can handle downloadable content unlike the Wii), it's a no-brainer to go with the PC version. Nintendo's only hope (if they even care, which they clearly don't) would be to release a hard drive, or at least open up the capabilities via a firmware update.
sweet - looking forward to see what the scene comes up with after ripping it apart.
also - now I have a reason to hang on to my wired 360 guitar.
This has tipped me in favour of getting my extra gig of ram and DX10 graphics card.
Upgrading those'll get me a nice rating of 5 on the vista experience thingy.
This should also work with the PS2 usb dongle thingy.
Utterly awesome. Can't wait for it's release.
What the hell is wrong with playing it on a desktop set up? You folks are aware that a tv and computer monitor fulfill the exact same fucking purpose in the context of this game, right?
Stop being negative just to be negative.
O I can feel the 1000s of custom songs coming from this release.
@NunianVonFuch: Hi dumbass who's looking forward to a portable party Guitar Hero lappy hookup here!
As long as ur not playing it on ur desktop sitting down then its grand, no need to be so stuffy about it. Laptop + tele (in any house) = Portable Party!
well, forgive me. Didn't mean to be uncivil. I just don't see the appeal. My main issue is carrying the stuff around which defeats the purpose of portability, but that's just me. I can see maybe moving it from one house to another, but that's the same as taking a guitar and a copy of the disc to a house that has a console.
Anyway, I digress. Not being a PC gamer, I didn't think of the other possibilities for this (moding and such). Oh well, I'll still be playing on my PS3.
I'm probably going to pick this up, the reason being that, as mentioned above, I expect it to be hacked for custom soundtracks within days. Then I can play Whiskey In The Jar and I will be happy :)
This is amazing news.
First of all, it means Guitar Hero around the campfire for my friends' beach parties. And second of all, for all my friends in bands - it means not only a downloadable mp3 on their MySpace pages, but a custom downloadable GuitarHero track for their song too.
I predict this will rock.
@def PD: Good man! Support your PC industry!
Here come the O2Jam/O2Mania Freaks, coming to wipe everyone out.
@Sullyville:
Exactly. It'll happen, someone will figure out a way to get custom songs into GH3 for PC, and it'll be greatness. And yet you'll STILL have the Gamefaqs crowd that posts about wishing X or Y song was in Guitar Hero, saying "I hope they're in Guitar Hero 4!!"
PC Gaming. The only way to fly.
Excellent. I was annoyed at first having to buy both Rock Band and GH3 and now I don't need to buy GH3! ;)
I'm hoping it gets modded and kills off FoF as the custom-song-rockin standard on the PC. It is horribly programmed.
seeing how 360 controllers are supported by windows they better make the 360 guitar PC-compatible
This=Awesome
The custom tracks thing is not all it's cracked up to be. The notes play whether you hit them or not, it can be incredibly difficult to get some of the fret files out there synced up with the mp3, and 70-80 percent of all user made fret files are total crap. They don't play anything like they sound, they have no co-op, and usually only one difficulty level.
It's a fun novelty to throw Tool or Dueling Banjos up on the screen and mess around with it, but it's still not nearly as fun as the songs already included in the game. Lacks the same polish.
@gshock888:
You can already use 360 GH guitars on PC for programs like Frets on Fire so that shouldn't be a problem.
excellent. i hope it doesnt have that lag problem that frets on fire has occasionally. even when fiddling with the settings, it still lags.
@Atheist Jew: It's like you know what I love, you are awesome and win!!!
@crescentfresh: I have to agree, I was going to get GH3 for the Wii and use the guitar with Frets on Fire as well, but screw that I'll just go with the PC version. Plus no stupid friend codes, modded content, and probably free DLC (suck it consoles).
@eXo: It's almost as if you've never been to Scorehero or CustomHero..
GH3 for free and easily modded to let you use any songs in the world you want. this is a win-win!
@SAKY:
You can use your PS2 guitar with a USB converter on the PC with Frets Of Fire, as well.
@Amuro1X: I would.
I'll play air guitar on ANYTHING, mind you.
Frets on Fire people will scoff.
anyone over the level of extremely causal PC gamer will wait to see if you can insert your own custom tracks.
Pirates will be happy to let people have their games for free.
Those three things make this move a nice setup for dissapointment on the part of activision.
If you were playing guitar hero on your laptop in some public place, you would look like a retard to people who had no idea what it was.
A norwegian broke the story like to weeks ago, when they recieved a tip from a source at the Leipzig Games Convention.
Just check it out here: [gamebase.no]
Man, I am so getting this on my MacBook Pro! It runs OS X, Windows Vista, Bioshock (maxed graphics) and now it will play Guitar Hero III?
What can't my MacBook Pro do?
And to those people thinking I am going to look like a retard playing in the park... I am sure you would be right there calling next.
I am going to pull this out at meetings as well :)
^ If there is one thing in the world I care about, it is how I look when playing video games. Before playing any game, I take a shower, shave and put on my nicest suit. Only then do I truly call myself a gamer.
On-topic- This is great news. I will be picking up the PC version now, simply for the huge community of custom songs. I hope this isn't DX10 only! ;)
Cheers!
@HayamaAkito: My thoughts exactly.
@Sullyville: Lol you're kidding me hey? I'm normally the first person to argue against the "Learn to play a real guitar!" team, but c'mon, taking a laptop and plastic guitar to a campfire? Why even bother going camping at all? Why not load up a fireplace screensaver in the comfort of your own home?
Oh, well, I guess if you did that, you couldn't play the PC version of the game.
I don't know about you guys but my PC has a much sweeter sound system than my consoles, not to mention downloadable song packs without a pesky pay service to pay subscription to on top of the price of the pack, and so on and so on. I am pleased with this.
Now my Mac's gonna have a game to play. This is great news. I was planning on buying it for Wii, but I think digital audio and dvi hookups to 1900x1200 will make for a slightly more refined experience.
Vista doesn't play my games, but OSX does. wtf?
I just bought GH3 for my PC and my PC meets all the game requirements, however it is not registering. I open My Computer and click on the CD drive bit nothing is there. Is there some thing wrong???
@SakuraK:
OMG same. i just got it for christmas. and nothing happens. its very disapointing
I don't see how anybody is going to be negative about Guitar Hero on the pc/mac. and for the people that don't understand how you would get the guitar hooked up on the computer. computers have what are called usb ports and you would hook it up in there. but i'm a little confused about how the 360 guitar would hook up on the computer because a 360 guitar would have a plug so that it would fit in the xbox 360 and the pc plug would be so that it would fit in the usb port which are totally different shapes. I was reading another forum about this and they we're talking about "enough whoring of this franchise" and I say why not try to put it out on every console so they ever gamer would have a chance to get it. and some people don't have pc desktops and have laptops that they would keep in their house or maybe a friend dosen't have a desktop and wants to play it so you can bring your laptop and play it with him. all I play is pc games and I like playing games on the pc a lot better then those on game systems and I personally can't wait to get this game. I have an ati radeon X1300 PRO and it gives me as much graphics as an a big HD tv would with an xbox 360. so I can't wait to get this game on my pc.
äquired"a copy of gh3 on pc a while ago and i've been playing it using the wireless 360 controller, just splash out the $30 AUD or whatever and pick up the wireless receiver for the pc so you can use your 360 controllers, this also works for using the standard controllers for games like prostreet if you really want to.
ill grab a legal copy later though simply for the online play though, would be kinda cool playing gh3 wih some mates and still being lazy enough that i dont have to go to their places to play lol.
damm fun game though.
(as a side note, if you live in adelaide, the wireless recievers for the 360 controllers can be found at myer in rundle mall for $40, if you live in brisbane, david jones and myer in queen stree both stock the receiver for $30, same for toowoomba, im currently in QLD on vacation lol)
I think this is a super idea. My bf is always on the main tv playing Halo. It would be great if I could play guitar hero on the computar instead of fighting for the tv. That and ppl with lab tops can take a guitar and lab top to work on the rigs or whatever alot easier then bringing a console as well.
