"My name is Wil Wheaton and Jack Thompson can suck my balls."
If there's one thing Wil Wheaton knows how to do, it's get a reaction from a crowd. Whether he's inciting the ire of millions as Wesley Crusher on Star Trek or kicking off PAX 07 with his keynote speech, he never fails to make an impression. He makes his way onto the stage with dramatic musical accompaniment, citing the above line to an adoring crowd. After railing through every gamer cliche' that one could imagine and dropping a few f-bombs along the way, he begins recounting his days as a young nerd playing video games in the local arcade. He compares his generation's love of the old arcade to this generations attachment to World of Warcraft and Xbox Live. These, he says, are the arcades of today. The crowd is in the palm of his hand as he moves on from arcade classics to home consoles, hitting every classic title along the way and filling everyone's heads with nostalgic memories of the golden age of gaming.
Moving on to the present, Wheaton ruminates on the Wii and how it brought his love of gaming back to the fore. He sees the Wii and games like Guitar Hero as social tools and new ways of bringing families together. He knows that making sure what his kids play and experience in games is his responsibility and no one else's, finally giving a another big fuck you to Mr. Thompson and his ilk, whipping the crowd into a frenzy once again.
His speech is equal parts love letter to geekdom and a call for gamers to rise up in force and show the world that we can and will be taken seriously. The rapturous audience is duly impressed and indeed rise to the occasion and their feet, sending Wheaton off with a well deserved standing ovation.

The man is a legend...
I salute you sir.
time to go check wikipedia, then come back and act like ive known who this guy was for years.
it's weird seeing a sentence where modern games and their audiences are considered no different to those of yesteryear, and immediately after that, games of yesteryear being considered part of some kind of 'golden age.'
@TheIrishNinja: He played Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: TNG. A character they eventually wrote out, by having him become one of the most powerful entities in the entire bloody universe and simply transcending beyond reality, for the sake of it. At like, 17 years old.
And was never mentioned anywhere in the series, ever again.
Pretty much the biggest role he's ever had, because I've never seen him do anything since. Except for that thing with being a writer for Suicide Girls.
@SilverStar95: You forgot his main geekcred: he has a slashdot account with a low enough ID# to be cool!
@SILVERSTAR95: He's also a book author, a cartoon voice actor (Teen Titans, GTA Vice City Stories, GTA Liberty City stories, just go to imdb.org and save me the trouble), a regular actor, and a very successful poker player.
He has (what I and others regard as) the best celebrity blog in existence. He's smarter than 99% of the people I know.
He's a good guy.
"My name is Wil Wheaton and Jack Thompson can suck my balls."
With those words he got my vote.
@Snukadaman_: Wil Wheaton for First Gaming President!
He used to be such a clean cut character in Next Generation, though The JT thing gives him more credibility. Hmmm the arcades are like the xbox live and world of warcraft. True, the amount of pennies put in those things and afternoons after school is pretty similar as well as the multiplayer games of gauntlet.
Yes this man has credibility. I salute you Will and if It means anything I think you would have made a better captain of the Enterprise than Picard! With an attitude like that towards JT we need to bring you back as captain in another Star Trek. You can actually use that line in a time travel episode where you come back and straighten out all that is wrong with videogames and JT who is in reality a romulan agent trying to turn earths men into.....
Don't forget "stand by me". That movie always gets me right there.
@thesne:
"Don't forget "stand by me". That movie always gets me right there."
You beat me to it. Wil Wheaton performance as 'Geordie', the leading role in the film adaptation of Stephen Kings short story, "The Body", is by far the best of his career. River Phoenix may have outshone him in the star-quality department; Corey Feldman may have put on a more believable performance as the deformed psycho Teddy; and Jerry O'Connell is best remembered for how fat he was as a kid. But Wil Wheaton had the deeper character to play, and he pulled it off for most of the film.
I've been reading Stephen King since I was a kid in the late 70's, although I stopped after "The Tommyknockers". I loved "The Shining", but Kubricks film version, which I do love, is very different from the novel. I think the majority of movies made using Stephen Kings writings as the source material really suck donkey dicks. The tv version of "Salems Lot" was utter crap. The book scared the shit out of me when I first read it at age 9. "Carrie" was okay when it came out, but try watching it now. It does'nt hold up well. And the list goes on: "Firestarter" was crap, "Cujo" also crap, "Christine" bad acting, "The Lawnmower Man" utter crap, "Silver Bullet" never watched the whole thing.
A few movies were decent though: "Creepshow" was good, "The Dead Zone" Christopher Walken was great. "The Shining" more for Kubricks talent than a good adaptation. "Maximum Overdrive" a good 'bad' movie, if you know what I mean.
And then came "Stand By Me". The first good Stephen King movie. Rob Reiner did a good job directing, which helped tremendously. But the kids playing the lead roles all did good, even Keifer Sutherland. Besides "Stand By Me", I think I few other films turned out good. "Misery" is a classic if for nothing more than the famous ankle scene. "Shawshank Redemption" took another short story and made it into a great full length feature film. "Apt Pupil" was another short story that was agood film with good acting from Ian Mckellen. "The Green Mile" was good and it also had great actors giving great performances.
And it all goes back to Wil Wheaton in "Stand By Me".
Sorry for the long, rambling rant. Sometimes I just get on a roll and can't shut up.
I found him annoying on Star Trek, but his Suicide Girl articles are usually fun. He also has the honor of being Ashley Judd's first on-screen kiss(from that episode of TNG with the game that's addictive like crack).
A bit immature with the f this and f that, isn't it? People can make intelligent conversation without the swearing or rude comments.
@neobooper: Oddly enough people can make intelligent conversation with swear words. What's immature about the word "fuck"?
The word has strong meaning behind it, and from how it was described being used, it sounds like the context was perfect.
wow, i'm glad to hear him being so vocal towards video games. i'm starting to think that pax may be where the revolution starts..... when/if it happens.
I always think of my ex-GF when I see/hear/etc Wil Wheaton, she doesn't care for Sci-Fi in general but apparently had quite a crush on Wesley Crusher as a young girl.
@jerrt: See its skeptical people like you, always doubting that the revolution is coming, that hurt its feelings so often.
*looks at revolution sobbing in corner*
There there, revolution, I promise you'll come someday, don't let the mean old Kotaku posters get you down.
@SilverStar95: Actually he shows up again near the end of the series.
@neobooper: You certainly have a point regarding f-bombs, but let's remember the context of his speech here. Have you ever read Penny Arcade?
@shrume:
It was more than just crack. It was mind control from those Ktarian rebels.
What? It was on the other day.
Hi, Wil Wheaton here. Set your phasers for FUN! ;)
@TheIrishNinja:
Ditto...LMAO
He's also done some reviews of STNG episodes over at TV Squad that are just priceless.
@coalhalo: No shit? That was him in Stand By Me? I never realized that.
Yeah the acting and story was excellent, that was a real classy movie I must say.
CHOPPER SIC BALLS!
and the Pie contest were the most memorable. ;D
@JamesJohnMalcolm: Hmm, my slashdot ID is 34868. I never thought of it as a badge of geekcred. Wil Wheaton's is 129189. I am so glad to be 3x geekier than him! Wait, that can't be right...the only thing in the known universe 3x geekier than Wil Wheaton is Wesley Crusher.
Sounds like a good speech... but, forgive me for asking, why the hell is Wil Weaton delivering speeches about anything?
Hmm... If I saw a picture of him I might realize who he is but like this I have no idea. Like someone else said, time for wikipedia
Damn you all for not all remembering Stand By Me.
Wil is a good guy.
I'm in conflict. As a Trekkie I must despise him, as a gamer I must like him. Truly a harrowing dilemma.
Wil's aces in my book just for the "William F****** Shatner" story in his blog. I was a bit too young during the initial run of TNG to really appreciate Wil's odd position as teen heartthrob/most hated Mary Sue ever (depending on who you talked to), but I sometimes imagined myself doing the things he did, so he sort of made room for youth in the crew (among the all-adult cast, Wil and the occasional kids, alien or on-ship, were it).
@Stevedroid: Well, considering that in ST:TNG a) he was 17 with a steady gig, working and getting paid on one of the biggest shows in history. b) He was a kid just doing his job c) The character was Gene Reddenberry writing himself into the show.. and c) Wasn't that like... 20 years ago?
You sir, need some salutification.
Oh, and to theirishninja, "time to go check wikipedia, then come back and act like ive known who this guy was for years." That's the first thing I thought I doing when I read the title of the post.
@theelk801:
I totally thought you were awesome until that excuse about it being "on the other day".
Own the Trekness!!! Viva la Wheaton!!! ;D
