Nintendo Sponsoring NASCAR Car

Nintendo looks to expand its reach to more 8 to 80 year olds as the company is sponsoring a Wii branded NASCAR this season. Greg Biffle's Ford Fusion will sport Wii colors at the NASCAR Nextel Cup at the Glen on August 12 and the Dover 400 on September 23 reports the Sunday Hauler. If you're into NASCAR, Wii or collecting tiny toys, a diecast model of the Wii version at 1/24 scale is up for pre-order. Can it possibly get any better than driving around in an oval at high speeds with waggle white and blue? I think not!

  • wow, all i could think when I saw it was how ugly it is.

  • Why Nascar? Why not something cool? Like... Rally.

  • i read somewhere that nintendo owns the atlanta hawks. maybe they need to play a little wii sports to start winning some games.

  • lol vrrrrrrrrroooooooOOOOOOOMMMMMM WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Could this mean Ninty is going to make a new racing game? Or possibly get Sega to make one?

  • Wow, NASCAR and Wii.

It's like the two most annoying things have come together to form some sort of annoying Voltron.

  • That looks terrible. They should have just made it look like a wiimote.

  • Hmmm. I wonder if this means a new ad campaign. That smart car was getting old.

  • @Black-Dog-Howls: Rally has very few viewers compared to Nascar despite how awesome it is.

  • @TheJordanator: This coming from someone using Fox McCloud as their avatar? Bizarro world strikes again.

ANYWAY - Looks like Canadia gets smart cars and we get the Nascars. Nintendo's really reaching out to every demographic imaginable.

  • They should have made it look like a Mario Kart.

  • @Dorphat: I say we get Stephen Colbert to announce national 'toss your Wiimotes at things' day until someone sponsors Rally.

  • @Mansteak: I don't get it, there's a StarFox game on the Wii? Oh wait, no there's not.

I LOVE SSB (I play as fox). The Wii however annoys me to no end with its slew of non-games and "audience broadening" crap. I bought one exclusively for SSBB and I haven't played it since I beat that awful zelda game. There's no substance on that thing.

  • The car is kinda lame, but the real point is another one: will the next NASCAR game for PS3 and X360 have this car? It would be really funny ;)

  • Hate NASCAR. Love the idea!

Just more exposure people, what's wrong with that?

  • It does look rubbish. But it's Wii promotion, so *shrugs*

  • @Keeko_ca: Yes, but do we really want THAT kind of exposure? There are plenty of jokes about the folk who watch NASCAR. It's a stereotype that is now being incorporated and acknowledged by Nintendo. I guess it's better than a fat Mario face on the hood? But damn.

I'm afraid I'm with TheJordanator on SSBB. That was the main drive for getting a Wii. I beat Zelda, and have not played any other games on the Wii that would make it remotely worth having. I am very picky about the games I play, I will admit :) So there is not much out there for me in Wii land.

Think Nintendo would get angry if we had a spread-eagle Zelda and/or Peach on the hood? That might catch a few eyes. Fun AND sexy, you can't beat that!

  • @bigman88zz: Nope. Nintendo owns the Seattle Mariners.

  • Between this and Nicole Kidman I think it's pretty obvious that Nintendo has no freakin' clue about what to do with the boat loads of profit they're making.

    What's next, "Wii Sports Drink"?

  • Whatever happend to Nintendo red and black? This new color scheme is awful!

  • Go figure, there isnt even a NASCAR game on/coming out for the Wii either.

  • Another Wii publicity is always good. We are talking about NASCAR here and it is pretty popular.

Personaly I prefer the Wii SMART car! Small, nice and compact(and demand less field/energy) just like the Wii! :D Good thing I can see some of it over here!

    @thejordanator
Well there is always StarFox64 on the VC! :P
(ok yeah minus rumble support -> lame, we need a patch update to fix that pronto!) Still replaying one of my favorite N64 shmups is always fun!
Plus Fox is in SSBB(the very reason why we should all get a Wii).

And you can bet your tails there will be a StarFox game on the Wii, I can just feel it...but the question remain...will it be developped internally by the original team(OH GOD MAKE IT SO) or farm out...again(2 on GC and 1 on DS...well the last one was way better than the 2 on the GC at least)

  • @Ravana:
We may not want that kind of exposure, but Nintendo certainly does.

More peeps playing the Wii, the merrier.

  • Actually, Watkins Glen is a road course and not an oval so it will be driving in an oval and a "real" racetrack.

  • Danm Nintendo, what do you wann prove with this marketing idea? That you only knows to run in circles? For shame, find something better to sponsor!

  • @Lider: no, no, that would be Gate's 360. lol....

  • I would take F1 or a good rally race any day over nascar. However, I've actually seen Greg Biffle do something remarkably cool.

He was starting a race in 10th position. Before they started, one of the announcers mentioned that Biffle had stated he "would be leading the race by the fourth lap."

Near the end of the third lap he took the lead. I thought that was pretty awesome.

  • No matter what the news, all the haters on Kotaku.com will reply with the typical "whine whine whine, it's stupid, whine whine whine piss and moan". Funny.

They're making money hand over fist right now and it doesn't matter if every "hardcore" gamer or hater online doesn't like Nintendo, they [haters] won't change anything. I love rally and ALMS/LMS racing more than anything, but sponsoring a NASCAR team is brilliant marketing. NASCAR may only be popular in the United State, but it's audience is too huge to ignore. Only idiots of a marketing staff would ignore the potential fanbase to be had among the legions of NASCAR fans. Fans who close most cities for a race there's so many of them.

As of right now, Nintendo is the most brilliant of the "big three" when it comes to business. Love them or hate them. Their job as a business is to make a profit, and they're succeeding 110%, which the same can't be said for Microsoft who is losing on every system and Sony who is losing money on all fronts.

  • Huh, Greg Biffle is apparently actually a decent racer. Well, more promotion, the better, I guess.

  • @DXY!: wikipedia says partial owner of the hawks (subject to craziness)

  • @TheJordanator:

You complain about the lack of games for the Wii, yet you contradict yourself by refusing to try any other titles besides Zelda and Super Smash Bros. I assume you have never played great gaming masterpieces such as Trauma Center, The Godfather, Excite Truck, Scarface, or Elebits. And also just because casual games don't require 50+ hours to complete does not make them terrible. I for one have played Big Brain Academy and it is not only a blast to play but also helps me with my memory.

  • To all the NASCAR haters, watch this video and try to say that you hate NASCAR with a straight face.

  • The world has officially ended, nice knowing you guys.

  • Godfather and Scarface gaming masterpieces!??!? OK I've only played the ps2 version of Scarface...but i can honestly say that game pretty much represents everything that's wrong with videogames for me. No actually everything that's wrong with our culture. SERIOUSLY! SCARFACE!?!

  • @UncleTonii: maybe you were being sarcastic...

  • Don't get that thing near the Viagra car or it's going to be hard to beat... get it hard to...

    Oh never mind.

  • Meh. If Linux can do it, why not Nintendo? They're finally reaching out to the market that thinks it's exciting to watch cars go 'round in an oval for 6 hours.

  • Well at least it's Biffle and not some no name. Kind wish Carl Edwards could be driving it though, I'd love to see him backflip off of it.

  • The only thing that could make this "better" is if the car was driven by a wiimote. But seriously, isn't nascar a big thing in the states? This is just another way to advertise. Isn't that what big corporations do? SELL, SELL, SELL!!!

  • @UncleTonii:

    Those are gaming masterpieces...

    ROFLMAO ... "pinch me" ROFLMAO!

  • Damn...why can't they sponsor a toyota car instead of a Ford.

  • @Dark_Cheetah:

Because maybe they want a chance to win a race?

  • @socraticMethOdz:

You have apparently never played the Godfather for Wii, simply put, the title is amazing. Extorting bussinesses, bribing officials, and fulfilling objectives are all extremely satisfying. Not to mention the motion controls greatly enchance the fighting system.

And also although I have not played Scarface on the Wii personally, Ign gives it a great rating

    [wii.ign.com]

  • Uh, Watkins Glen is a road course, not an oval.

  • Ah! The pastel colors are blinding!

Also, Formula One is far superior to NASCAR.

  • @Dorphat:

"Rally has very few viewers compared to Nascar despite how awesome it is'

    eh?

Is that one of those US centric viewpoints again? :p

Last time I saw Rally, it has an International present, with an international global viewership.

Or does NASCA have the same thing? Is it like how Baseball got a "World Series" yet it doesn't really feature any "World" country, except Japan?

    :P

The most exhilarating motor sport, drive oround in a circle, VERY FAST.

Beats driving though life threatening stages though Africa inimpossible conditions....pffft...PANSIES!!!

  • @ShirtNinja:
    @SomeRandomGuy:
Did you two even read my original post here? And watching boring races where all the passing is in the turns and where the same damn guy wins over and over =! fun

  • Dear God..... my fanboyism might very well be reacing epic heights. I've always hated NASCAR with a passion on account of the fact that it merely entails turning left, the best part about it is their blooper reels, and because their fans make up the lowest depths of the human genome due to massive amounts of trailer-trash inbreeding, but when I see that car all I can think about is how awesome it would be to see that car fire a blue shell and wreck all the bastards in front of him.

    Blue sparks ftw?

  • I'm conflicted, as I really like the Wii, yet can't stand Greg Biffle (I'm a Harvick fan for any NASCAR folks out there). To cheer for the car or not... nah, it's Biff behind the wheel.... BOO WII CAR!

  • I just scrolled to the bottom and started typing this without reading, so I'm sure it's been said, but I needa say it anyway (after having had so much trouble finding a Wii then getting jacked an extra 50$ by the asshole retailer):

Does Nintendo really need more advertising for the Wii? This is money they should be dedicating to MAKING MORE FUCKING WIIS.

  • @tifosiotaku: Yes I did, and my opinion is unchanged.

  • I have a Wii car that I painted and race in NASCAR Racing 2003 Season, and I actually like this move. NASCAR's ratings have plateaued, yes, but to be honest, it's still insanely popular.

And at least they picked Watkins Glen, which is one of the races they don't go around in a circle on (it's a road course).

And to the poster who said they would have rather seen Carl Edwards with this paint job: I agree. But the 16 makes sense because their main sponsor pulled out due to financial races, so they have space. They've also got Aflac on board for 8 races.

  • Cause when I think Nintendo, I think Greg Biffle.

Why not someone a little more approachable like, say, Casey Mears; Denny Hamlin; or Carl Edwards?
