Speaking with Free Radical script writer Rob Yescombe earlier today, he reiterated that Free Radical is indeed hard at work on Timesplitters 4.
"In the past Timesplitters has been very satirical at the expense of movies, this time it will be satirical at the expense of video games," Yescombe said.
The game is in the very early stages of development, Yescombe said. When I asked him what systems they were developing it for Yescombe said "unsigned at the moment."

Work , not word. Wrong middle finger Crecente. I love TimeSplitters. 3 was kind of lackluster, except for the cat racing, but 2 was amazing and still one of my favs.
My guess is PC,360, and PS3, maybe a dumbed down Wii version too. If they're smart that is.
Nice
@ USEDTABE
I hope they do a Wii version. Make it Gamecube controller compatible so I don't have to change much from my precious TS2. If the graphics even look slightly better then the cube's I'd be OK with it. Maybe get their horrible online working for it.
......but in reality I will probably get this for the 360.
Temporal Paradox, I choose you!
Honestly can't wait.Just replayed Timesplitters 3 about two days ago and even though it may not be as much fun as 2,the (short) story had me laughing non stop.
Hopefully Cortez is still the main character.I mean, who else can say the cheesy "Time to split" line and...well not get away with it.
Timesplitters games are terrible IMHO. Shows how people have different tastes.
TimeSplitters has been a fantastic series and I really thought future perfect was going to be the end of the series. Nice to see that A) I was wrong about that and B) Haze is finally complete to a point where FR can feel comfy moving people over to TS 4 construction
"...this time it will be satirical at the expense of video games."
That sounds really cool.
I'm hoping for Wii, but expecting PS3 and maybe 360. They have their roots in the PS2... But come on FR, throw us Wii owners a bone. I don't even care about Haze, I just need me some online monkey!
The TimeSplitters series is great. Hopefully, this'll be available for the Wii.
Also, why does everyone prefer TS2? I thought 3 improved on it in every way: They fixed the horrendous aiming, the graphics were beautiful, they made the weapons less cheap, they actually put in a cohesive story (#2's was paint by numbers, but still fun...), added outdoor elements to the mapmaker (a HUGE addition), and put (IMO) more interesting characters in. I've played TS2 maybe once since I got 3... It's just better.
@Gamemaster: Well, Free Radical frequently talk about their completely unrequited love for Nintendo.
Eg: They were pushing Kyoto to have Timesplitters 3 online on Gamecube as well as Xbox, Ps2 but....
Timesplitters is pretty cool, but the dev team (formerly of Rare) hasn't really moved on from Goldeneye.
My interest has been perked...
Can't wait, Timesplitters is all about fun. It'll be amusing to see them poke video games.
I don't really want a Wii port of this game. I love my Wii to death, but certain games I want to see put to use to their full extent. Wii controls aren't as important as better graphics/physics IMO for this series.
I want tons of levels (the first few did not have enough) an even more robust mapmaker with more customization options, and custom options like custom textures and whatnot. And I want a long, difficult story mode reminiscent of Future Perfect's. TS2's story was just kind of boring IMO, and I think Free Radical noticed that and made it comedic with Future Perfect. Satirizing video games? Awesome.
And I don't like TS2 over Future Perfect like most of you O_o it had it's advantages, but I can't go back to its controls. I just like the gameplay more in Future Perfect as well. Back in its day, I logged some serious hours on TS2 though.
I'm so happy they're doing this though :D
Oh hell yes. Still my favorite fps to play alone and with people (on console). I figured there wasn't going to be a 4, what with the story of 3 and all... It always amazed me how this series gets no hype for such a polished and great series. There's not a whole lot of 90%+ receiving games that just go under the radar like this one has. I assume it will come out on all the current systems like 2 and 3 did...
I want TimeSplitters 4 online for the Wii. It could be a port of TimeSplitters 2 for all I care, but I want it on the Wii and online.
This is absolutely fantastic news. I've loved the series since TS2 basically replaced GoldenEye for my friends and I at college for our FPS of choice, and Future Perfect's random movie references (so many Stargates in the last levels...) made it even more fun to play.
Can't wait to see what games and genres they spoof in there...if there's not a Halo ripoff stage and a Final Fantasy joke, I'll be sad. But the game will likely still rock.
Also, I agree with Mit here...I want the full shebang for TS4, not a slight improvement over TS3 with motion control shoehorned in. They need bigger multiplayer maps, a more functional Map Maker, more interactive environments, and more destructible stuff, not a new control scheme. The game controls fine enough as it is.
@Mit: @Archaotic: You guys make it seem like the game can't be vastly improved and still be on the Wii... Sure, it can't look as good as it can on the PS3, but at least the PS3's getting Haze.
When you look at FPSes on the Wii compared to the others, your face probably looks like this: T_T... I know mine does.
Sure FPSes look better elsewhere, that's old news- but the Wii needs a great FPS, and what's greater than FRadical?
You hear that, Free Radical? You've got MY money.
All thats needed is a jump button.Everything else...just sprinkle some nex gen magic into it
Great news. Hope they change the main character though. The bald space marine was horribly generic, but I have loved every game in the series so far.
Not as good as Perfect Dark yet but hoping TS4 or Haze comes close (although I really wish they could put Joanne Dark in the games as she was a million times better than any character design Free Radical has come up with so far).
@Gamemaster: Well, hear me out, man. I'm fine with the Wii getting FPSes. But so far, every single one to hit the system has been godawful, and I'd rather not see TimeSplitters added to that list until someone proves without a shadow of a doubt that FPSes can be done well on the system.
And honestly, I'd rather have the Map Maker and better graphics over motion control. I just really don't think the FPS genre needs it. If the aiming was 1:1, it might be better, but the whole "push a cursor around the screen" aiming system that the Wii uses as of now just doesn't cut it for precision in my book. Especially for a game as absurdly fast-paced as TimeSplitters.
I bet 'unsigned at the moment'' means it was planned for 360 and PS3 but they have seen the wii sales and so are thinking about putting it on that. Maybe put it on PS2 as well if they are doing a wii version.
This is... this is such good news I feel literally on the verge of tears of joy.
360 and PS3 are largely inevitable. I'd be willing to place a modest wager on a Wii version as well, though.
I hope they bring back Streets. Worst thing about 3 was the absence of that level. :( Although they've all been solid games, imo. I hope it's hard, like the first two, as well.
A great shooter series that doesn't take itself too seriously.
I just can't wait for the "custom map" mode. With all the storage available on consoles now, I'd probably spend a good amount of time tinkering with that specific feature of the game.
Okay, two things:
It BETTER come out on the Wii. I freaking hate having to borrow my lil bro's 360 to play shooters.
Also, it BETTER allow for more mapmaker memory. I can literally spend hours on end tinkering with the mapmaker.
And guys? Bring back the Alien tileset. Kthx.
TimeSplitters wasn't satirical at the expense of video games before?
@Samaridino: and some type of dodge button. i was a bit pissed when i saw the computers could still dodge in TS3. i think they could put back the alternate fire the way they did in 2, but overall i like TS3 better.
@AKFG: Yeah, alternate fire should be done like 2...i mean from the ps2 controls they could have easily moved the melle attack to one of the face buttons, since the O button had no function.
switching between fire modes was the only real part of the game that i was slightly annoyed with.
Timesplitters 4?!?!?! There is a God!
Timesplitters 4 would be great.
Timesplitters is awesome. I think they might make this for the Wii. As they mentioned in the Haze post earlier, they see great potential in the Wii for fps. Make it happen Free Radical.
How come they are able to start production on the game without knowing what system it's going to be on yet every other game studio complains that system X caused development problems because it is so different from system Q and we had to build both from scratch.
I think the Wiimod people for half-life 2 pulled off the controls pretty well in most respects besides the beta problems.
After the ending to TS3, I wasn't expecting another. I loved TS3, especially because it was a shooter that had characters you really cared about, and it didn't take itself seriously. As long as the story is nonsensical and hilarious, the weapons bizarre, and the multiplayer insane, I'll be very happy.
Mmmm Timesplitters. This just made my day.
They should have Dr. Doak as a character in multiplayer. I've waited YEARS.
WTF? Why is this here?... Not that this doesn't deserve the attention...
again?.....
Somethings wrong with the picture on the front page... for a second I thought this was an old story. Might want to look at that someone...
"unsigned at the moment."???? Sounds like they want to develop this one platform and are waiting for an offer from a hardware manfacturer. If this goes Sony exclusive then I guess they do "buy exclusives". Time will tell.
I would REALLY like to see an FPS developed souly for the Wii. I don't think this will be it, but I can Dream. No, Metroid doesn't count.
Monkeys, Elvis, zombies and ducks :) God that brings back some smiles. I have an irrational love for the timesplitters franchise.
deja vu?
That was funny... the image changed to Gears of Monkey on the front page now... guess it's been fixed.
The Wii needs a FPS that uses the remote correctly.. so that other companies follow.. but I doubt Metroid or this will be that game.. who knows though. I never got to play a timesplinters game before though.
That sounds alot like those 'movie' movies that try to parody movie genres and be all 'insightful' but end up rehashing the same tired jokes that everyone made when the movies came out.
@Glazun: I don't know, IGN said it feels better than every single console FPS ever... I mean, that's got to be decent at least.
The problem is getting everyone to buy it.
@Marasai: Yes, but there are few "game" games. Incidentally, there was some game satire in Timesplitters 2, but it was only a little bit.
In the arcade mode they had rip offs of Turok, Red Faction and Half Life- aptly names Aztec the Dino Hunter, Dread Fraction and Half Death.
@Glazun:
Take heart. It looks like Metroid is going to be amazing. I doubt i'll kill the last boss as for some wierd reason every metroid game I ever played seems to have a boss from hell at the end. Why make the last boss 10 times harder than anything you face through the actual game. It's always a bloomin' metroid blob too!
@Gamemaster: I agree with you about the aiming and general polishing of ts3, I just felt like it lost some of the personality of 2...maybe because of some EA involvment? It seemed like 1 and 2 had a cool darker sense of humor where 3 was a bit more goofy, but from a technical standpoint it was better. I think the main thing was people were hoping for more...i know still not being able to jump over a 2 foot obstacle was sorta annoying, and the vehicles felt tacked on and unfinished. Plus I want a better mutator system where you can combine different mods like UT...
Oh man, I forgot how awesome Time Splitters is. I think I spent more time creating maps and scripting events than actually playing the game. If there was a Wii version and a 360 version... I might have to get both. I think the Wii will do well with FPS games. Plus I might be able to create maps much easier. Although Nintendo's stance against online play might make me just get the 360 version instead.
Time Splitters has always been funny and awesome.
@Gamemaster:
Free Radical is made up of the Goldeneye team from Rare. Their roots are in the N64.
I wanna see him put his potiential where his mouth is. FPS time splitter on the Wii and give us the option to play multiplayer fights with either the wii mote or the controller of our choice!
@savagesaladin: Oh you are giving it away. I also hope they let us make maps and send them to the ds cards so that we can tah dah put them on the internet! instant console mod community! Come on free radical the HD flood of the other console is going to be painful.
Do they really think they will have a chance with UT3, killzone, halo 3 and every other FPS coming out? The Wii is being milk but the FPS pastures are looking mighty green ya know? Don't get snuffed when the FPS flood purges the earth once more...LOL
@Glazun: Res evil has already started this trend... Money in the bank and a very addictive shooter now....
@Runna:
Timesplitters stands out with:
a) solid, half-way balanced gameplay, the Goldeneye blood still flows strong
b) It's completely non-serious setting, which sets it apart from all the others you just mentioned.
@penhalion:
Did you play Metroid Prime to the end?
!!!***WARNING: SPOILER***!!!
Did you see Metroid Prime at the end?
WOOT! They gotta bring back the Badass Cyborg, he's my favorite dude. ;)
