Uncharted Gets Totally Censored

Uncharted has guns. And guns shoot people. Shooting people causes people to bleed. Not in Japan, apparently! When played on a Japanese PS3, Uncharted is bloodless. Sure, Japan has done this before with games like Dead Rising and Resistance. It doesn't matter where you bought Uncharted as the game's still bloodless. The origin of the disc does not matter, but rather, the hardware does. Reader Ed explains:

In Resistance one could uncensor the game simply by downloading a Us save file. This does not work for Uncharted however as the save files are not compatible. You will be able to copy the Us save file to your system but the game will not even acknowledge it as it is in a different folder. Simply overwriting the files into a Jp save file results in corrupted data. I am unaware of any way to convert the save data and even then I'm not sure it would add the blood back.

Over at the PlayStation boards, there's a thread on this issue going. Some of the comments are off and incorrect, and Ed does a fantastic job of addressing those concerns in a short YouTube clip he made. That, after the jump.
Things to note: The parental controls are off. The game was purchased at an American retailers, and the hardware is a 60GB Japanese PS3. That, and the game's being censored.

  • If hardware is censoring it, it must have some co-relation to the firmware, and updates of it to refuse just blood outright.

Anyone tried it with old firmware?

  • @BD:

Ehh, and when I say "refuse blood outright", I don't mean, refuse it in every game where it detects "blood", that would be stupid - I mean, they put shit in the firmware just to change these two or three aspects of Uncharted specifically, so no matter what version of Uncharted you load, your firmware is telling it which options to run with.

So when you load it, it either replaces or runs a secondary string of code in place for the blood elements.

But that's just ass talk really, I naturally have no idea how this occurs.

  • In an odd way I feel better that we aren't the only country with our head in the sand.

  • Hang on! Uncharted is out already?

  • Did the same happen with Ninja Gaiden Sigma?

  • So the PS3 is only going to be region free if the game is identical in all regions?

  • thats horrible why can't people see what they want to see. If country really wants to plague good games with less good content make it so younger views can see it with a ssn or something. or make a password protect gore. I just don't understand these things. Its not like they havn't seen the red liquid within themselfs. and what do you think happends when you get shot or shoot somebody. a object breaking apart your cells and destroying tissue lets the tissue bleed BLOOD!

  • maybe the evil way to fix this problems is a almost hidden option to change the region of your consoles as you want. that way we can have the cake, and eat it: people can make censored games that make somo people happy, and smart people can play games the way where designed. but this a bottom-to-top solution, and this worl is ruled by top-to-bottom decissions.

i think blood on impact can be a visual hint. and removing this from a game that need it is a very bad thing, substract from gameplay and usability.

  • I only played the demo on my PS3 but when I got shot it got white as well, though there WAS blood.

  • The one thing I dislike about Japan is that they all seem to be semi-obsessed with US stuff, but hate change. I dislike change as well, but at some point in their violent past(Expert Knights, Assassins, many regions at war at any one time, and of course, Karate.) they got it in their heads that violence which is absolutely unnecessary is bad, and anything that allows you to do it is bad. Not entirely flawed, but their discretion seems to be askew.

Honestly, the last thing I think of when I pick up the controller is how necessary virtual violence is.

But seriously? It's blood and red effects missing. Are the Japanese really that freakish that violence is no problem so long as nobody bleeds?

  • So when American games go to Japan, they edit out the blood, and when Japanese games go to America they edit out the blood? (Xenosaga)

    Ho-kay.

  • it's strange how much the US occupation changed Japan.

a far cry from 60 years ago...

  • @tehFluffzComeback: Yeah, in the actual game, you see more blood coming out of the villians when you shoot them than coming out of your own body.

It's so silly to censor it though, it's not like there are Grand Theft puddles of blood everywhere when you shoot someone. It's more like, you shoot the bad guy, he squirts an ounce, and dies :) See, nothing bad about that.

  • Wait. So, in Japan I can buy dirty, used panties from a machine and watch what really amounts to pedophile anime. But I could not watch blood come out of people? Good call Japan, good call.

  • @Kosher Infidel: You can, it'd just require a higher rating from Cero.

  • @Kosher Infidel:
Not to mention the hypocrisy of censoring blood, but allowing games like "Battle Raper 3".

  • At least they didn't change the gun into disco gun:

  • I had no idea Resistance was censored. I played through the Japanese version in English on an early Japanese unit. I sold my PS3 a while ago so I can't really remember how it was exactly.. I guess that says something about how much it matters.. to me at least.

  • I think that it's irresponsible to show someone getting shot and not bleeding.

IMO it's things like this that show violence as being easy and painless that lead to desentisisation

  • @BD: More likely Activision coded Uncharted to not render the blood if it detected that it was running on Japanese hardware. Unless this only started happening after the firmware update I'd say it's only based on the hardware model.

Perhaps this is similar to how Ratchet has those goofy big black eyebrows, glassy eyes and green pants if you play it on Japanese hardware, except this was actually required by CERO (Japan's version of ESRB) in order to get some certain rating.

  • It's a shame they are going to such lengths for things like this. I wonder how much something like this helps? Few Japanese people are likely to want to import Uncharted from the US. The Japanese version is being released at the start of December, a scant few weeks after the North American release, with a few Japanese translation, unlike some of the EA Japanese PS3 releases which are stuck over there as is.

So the most likely people to be running a US copy of Uncharted on a Japanese PS3 are a) people who bought a Japanese PS3 but live in North America or b) Westerners living in Japan who might get a copy as a present or wish to spend the extra money to import.

Why should these two groups get an edited version of Uncharted? When I lived in Japan I had a local copy of Resistance. I didn't know anything was edited out of it, but I consider that fair enough if I was prepared to buy the Japanese copy of the game. However, if you are not living in Japan and buy a game from an uncensored country, while you living in said country, you should be able to have access to the uncensored game. The game and machine shouldn't have a conference and decide that I'm not allowed.

I love idea of region-free gaming but things like this and the region-locked Uncharted demo fiasco take the sheen off, and make it seem like Sony is trying to play fast and loose with what they meant by a region free console. It seems like further pokes in the eye for international owners who travel and early adopters. If I hadn't supported the machine since its launch day, I could have saved a lot of money and avoided issues such as these.

  • I have a Japanese PS3 and I dealt with the same crap before I fixed my Resistance save. I can't stand it when they pull this, "We know what's good for you." bullshit. A lot of us are adults and don't need virtual nannies. Isn't this what parental codes and game ratings are for? Give me a fucking break.

  • Sorry, I meant "full" translation above, obviously, not "few"

  • hmmm i think the game just dropped a notch from my must play list <_<

  • well whats going to happen to killzone? are they going to censor the beautiful blood in that too?

  • Hmm. I just noticed that it was missing when I watched this video. I played through the whole demo not really paying attention to the blood missing. I think you people should cool down a bit. If you are bloodthirsty maniacs, you should just go to a butchers' and hack away. This game, especially, is quite awesome, and the lack of blood doesn't change it a bit. Were the blood a gameplay element, then I'd say that it is bad it's missing. It's not. Deal with it, and go play Postal if you really miss it.

PS. Also, selfmutilation is known to produce happy amounts of bleeding.

    Fucking `ell is what I say. :/

Goddamn it Japan you bunch of pussies.

I say this is bullshit, and people should start riots over it. We need to show companies that we arent going to stand for shit like this.

Seriously am sick and fucking tired of "others" trying to decide what I should and should not view.

  • Japan has crazy sex-related stuff, so I guess it pans out.

    Still, this is retarded.

  • That's funny. I got mad when I read the title of this post and then when I watched the video I realized my Japanese PS3 had censored Uncharted and I didn't even notice. Not only that, but I played through Resistance twice and didn't notice a thing about missing blood. Oddly, I'm still mad and will no longer be buying a white PS3 to take back to America in 3 weeks for the holidays. I'll pay the extra and have more room in my luggage anyway.
Also, my Japanese friend watched "Afro Samurai" with me and asked if it was American. I said I thought so because Samuel L. Jackson is the voice. He said, "It must be. It's too violent for Japanese." Turns out it was made by Japanese dudes. He has also never heard of "Akira" or "Ninja Scroll", but loves Gundam. (Gundam Musou sucks, btw)

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 06:18 AM on 11/21/07 *

@Sabre_Justice: Yes but what you dont realise is the sex-related stuff isnt part of the "normal" market as games are.

  • Game has little blood in it already

  • Ha! They allow rape simulators, but they don't allow blood. Irony at it's finest.

  • Image of baked ham baked ham at 06:28 AM on 11/21/07 *

@Amerijapoxicano: Huh. I have never been to Japan, and I only know one person who lived in Japan most of his life, and he doesn't play videogames or watch anime... But over here, Akira is like the holy grail of anime. And Ninja Scroll is right up there with in my tastes. I'm a huge fan of both films, and I'm surprised to hear that they don't have a following over in the homeland. Akira in particular: that's one fantastic piece of animation.

  • You know it could be a decision by the developer to make sure the game makes it to a larger audience by having a more acceptable rating. Its nothing to do with the blood, just the rating. If you watch anime or read manga, you should know the Japanese love their blood.

  • Gah. I almost got Uncharted last night but instead opted for Kane & Lynch so my wife and I have one to play through co-op. Every time I see this game I wanna kick myself in the ass for doing it. Haven't started Kane & Lynch though so it may be ok.

  • @CALLAHAN09: that's probably because a lot better has come out since AKIRA, which is now, quite old. Ninja scroll isn't called 'Ninja scroll' in Japan either.

  • @Shin-Kaiser
Yeah, the Godfather is quite old, too, but many, many Americans (and Italians, I'm sure) have heard of it. Also, I have lived here for almost a year and a half now, I know enough Japanese to know that Scroll isn't a Japanese word and that Ninja is pronounced Knee-n-ja(as in john). I showed my friend a clip from Youtube and he had never seen it.
I know both are old, but they are still my favorites. I gave Naruto and Dragon Ball z a try, but they are lame. Color me Red, White, and Blue, but I like the old fashioned, ultra-gory Anime.
I see where you are coming from, though, Shin-Kaiser.

  • In my version it goes black and white when your hurt "Us version." But Blood flies out when you shoot people "and other stuff :P" You get a faint red line when hit! But black and white is in every version when hurt, or die. Oh and by the way this game kicks major booty! Bad A**S!!!! Game

  • Strange that in Japan, they remove the blood from American games targeted at teens (and older), yet in America, they have to do the same thing to Japanese kid's cartoons.

At least the game still works without the blood. When I see anime on American TV I'm often struck by how incoherent some scenes become when you cut out some of the shots.

  • @Captain-Impulse: oh hey 3 is out? i mean.....ya....bad japan....

  • Japan, just like America, makes no sense (but in the opposite direction). Their cartoons features gratuitous violence and underage tentacle rape, but the video games can't show blood. Yeah, ok.

  • hmm ifeel sorry for japanese users :O

  • I love how Japan want to keep their public "safe", while there are probably more pedophiles, perverts and sickos in Japan than in America.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 08:56 AM on 11/21/07 *

@Vidril: Kind of like how your comment is a fine example of how the internet is swimming with fucktards right?

  • *censored due to thought*

  • Well, this is another game I won't be buying on principle alone. Developers... please stop pandering to the vocal minority. It is the non-vocal (non-complaining actually) majority who buys your games.

    So it's:
    Sanitized = No sale.
    Unsanitized = Sale.

    Got it?

  • You can say the Japanese are illogical for censoring blood because we all have it in our bodies and they've seen it. Well why do they censor sex in North America? Blood may be in everyone but without sex, none of us would even exist in the first place.

  • @BD: I imagine that this game, like many new ones, contain the firmware update on disc and you will have to install it before being able to play.

  • i dont get it there Anime is so extremely bloody but their games get censored , how does that work?

  • Yeah. That's what I was thinking. I remember with DBZ that shit was bloody as all hell. When they brought it over to Cartoon Network the big whigs censored the hell out of it. No blood, just black shit. So, why is the reverse now going on...that doesnt make any sense.

  • wasn't it Kill Bill that was sensored in the wsst but not in Japan? weird how som of these things play out.
if anyone's familiar with the Samurai Spirits V Special sensorship ordeal(and why it took place), they wouldn't be suprised too much by this. a shame though, as I have a japanese PS3 and was looking foward to picking this game up. I like my games medium rare.

  • You guys are missing the point, it's not about not allowing or allowing it. They censored out the blood in Japan to get a lower CERO rating because they obviously want it to be alright for little kids as
