google translate says it reads: "If you are reading this stone burial you are a huge nerd. Please Get a life and get a girlfriend" which is less offensive and in my opinion pretty funny actually.

The funny thing is, I never would have been able to read that sign if I hadn't played Spanish for Everyone on the Nintendo DS.

What IS funny is ppl who don't think that finding this in game and translating would make them laugh. Perhaps some one might not laugh because they are reading about it on a website and not finding this in game? iunno,,, but I know funny HAH

I'm not sure it's saying if you CAN read this, the '-endo' implies an '-ing'. I think it's more, 'IF you're reading this, THEN...' Like, 'You're a huge nerd for coming over to this corner behind the tree and looking so closely at this random piece of level-art.' Still a lame attempt at humour, but slightly less offensive.

It's not like it was written in Klingon or Elvish. Hell, even Latin would have been a better choice for that message. It might not have fit but then agan maybe the "joke" didn't need to be there.

actually, a better (correct) translation would be: "if you ARE reading this...", no "if you CAN". I think that changes the meaning of the phrase.

I find it hilarious and I know Spanish. The population that does understand Spanish may hopefully understand the joke.. as in, looking around closely for minute details in games is TOTALLY LAME AND YOU SHOULD BE DOING IMPORTANT THINGS. ;) For those who don't understand what it says, it's just as funny.

I think it's directed at people who were going to see this and go like "omg i have to find out what it says" and than get around to actually translating it.

Yep a spanish friend of mine just confirmed that in this context it says if you ARE not if you CAN. Kotaku needs to get their own translation done as they seem to be creating insult where none was intended or even implied.

Uhm... as an Spanish speaking gamer I don't find it offensive but I don't understand how it is funny or clever either. Most games have easter eggs that make references to games that only people that spend a lot time playing would recognize, and they came up with an easter egg that relates speaking Spanish with spending too much time doing nerdy things? How do they think people learn Spanish, by playing too much My Spanish Coach for the DS?

I think most people here are missing the joke. It's not saying that people that speak Spanish are nerds. It's saying people that take the time to read an inconsequential stone tablet in a game are nerds. Which is mildly funny, in my book, because it is totally something that I'd do.

The joke was a little on the lame side, true. It would have been much better if it said "Your dad _is_ drunk"

As someone mentioned before this is most likely for people who found it and took the extra time to translate it. I guess only then would it be considered nerdy. But eh, I'm Mexican and I didn't take offense.

It's becoming more and more customary to insult your viewer/readership/players these days in popular media as a way to to stay edgy. The fallacy is that they'll love you for it. I can't wait till it blows up in someones face and I'm so going to fan those flames when it happens.

I think the IMPLIED insult here is, that the player can't speak Spanish, and thus looks to translate it over the internet, and upon doing so, realizes he is such HUUUUUUGE a nerd...

I think this could be lost on everyone who has not actually seen this IN GAME. Yes reading this on a website does not make it funny. If you had seen it in game and Translated it then I think theres at least a slightly higher chance it might get a laugh. This is aimed at the type of user that Pokes around looking at the small details. (ADHOC perhaps?) Something one does when they are interested in finding things they wouldn't normally see-(not for everyone) I cant tell you how much I loved finding the "No easter egg here" sign on top of a bridge in GTA san and. It is the feeling of the game poking back at the user. Anyone who is insulted by this should be a good lil American and file a lawsuit now otherwise shaddap.

Hey, I'll get a life and a girlfriend when Naughty Dog releases a simulation game that allows me to play a character who, after hours of playing, is able to get a life and a girlfriend.

And the statistic that keeps tracks my "life points" had better be a tangible stat that shows up as an easy to recognize number. None of this ambiguous social standing crap that makes me hate living in the real world so much.

If it were in Esperanto or Morse code, somebody that could read would have to be either an uber-nerd or an Eagle Scout. Also, nerd and gay aren't mutually exclusive; don't the designers ever watch Bravo?

Okay, now, yeah, I get the implied insult of 'some people get too much into the game, even going so far as to read level-art.' So why not just put it in English, then? The act of putting the text in Spanish sends the message that gamers in the United States, or wherever else this version appears, don't speak Spanish, and the only ones who would read the message are those who are trying too hard.

Which isn't true, because like half the nation speaks Spanish, so it is a backhanded insult. Not one saying 'you are nerds,' but 'you aren't in our gaming demographic profile,' which is worse. Ask some gaming-chicks. As other commenters have said, Latin would have been a better choice.

I get the joke. But its a stupid joke. What's mildly offensive is that who ever put that in there assumes that their audience is not a spanish speaker, or literate in spanish, and would have to look it up. Considering a game that's getting a North American release, the assumption is spot on, save for the significant percentage of gamers that are literate in spanish.

This sort of lamery begs for real writers and creative people to become more involved with all aspects of game design, including its silly easter eggs.
