Oblivion PSP in Spring 2007

Bethesda — hot on the heels of the OPM cover story blowing open Oblivion for the PS3 and PSP — have sent everyone their press release, confirming the news.

There's nothing much new here, except confirmation that Oblivion will be a launch title for the PS3. They also clarify the release date for Oblivion PSP: Spring, 2007, in both North America and Europe.

They also include this rather embarrassing OPM quote:

If any game is worth the price of the PS3, Oblivion is it.

Jeez. Full press release after the jump.

  • Yeah that makes sense. Oblivion is worth the price of a PS3 when you can play it on 360 for $200 cheaper... right...

  • So does that hideous quote mean that Oblivion for PS3 will be a whole new game with unique things only possible on the PS3?

    No?

Then why not buy an Xbox 360 and play it on that!

  • Well, it is supposed to have a new questline.

Who knows if it is going to actually be one that's exclusive though. The game certainly allows significant flexibility in downloadable content.

  • Do you really think that a company that could sleep comfortably charging 250 points for horse armour will actually miss the opportunity to sell this on Live? It's free money.

  • Yawn.....

  • Heck, I bet they'll sell new skins for the horse and main chracter for 20 bucks just because "it's worth the price of PS3"!! :P

  • So the official playstation magazine says that, if any game is worth a PS3, it's a title already available on PC and 360?

    What does that tell you?

Incidentally, playing it on the PC is the only way, as far as I'm concerned. User created content, more readily available patches (the game, quite frankly, needs a lot of them). As for the exclusive content, is it anything that couldn't be created using the Elder Scrolls Construction Kit?

So, buy a PS3 to play Oblivion.

    ...or an X-Box or PC.

  • Worth buying the PS3 for Oblivion? No effing way. Buy it for you PC and play it there. You can freaking mod it. And like...actually control it was a shred of accuracy.

  • Holy crap I just pooped myself, that is by far and away the funniest thing I've ever read. The only thing that justifies a $600 purchase is a game that's been available in almost identical fashion on a platform that only costs $400 since APRIL?

    Jesus.

The funny part is, if you were thinking in a PS3 only universe, the quote makes perfect sense, because Oblivion is far and away superior to any of the other PS3 launch titles. But then you take into account the fact that there are two other platforms that have offered the title for months with no real difference (new quest line, whatever, its not like the game needed any more content to justify a purchase), it just becomes hilarious. Poor Sony fans.

  • Ouch. I'd hate to have my name behind that quote. The only worthwhile title the ps3 has is a port. A year old port. That sold me a ps3 right there.

  • Proof positive greed is alive and well in the industy.

  • Read this in another blog:

Oblivion on psp. Here's how it will play: walk 5 feet [loading] walk 5 feet [loading] walk 5 feet [loading] find an enemy [loading] swing sword [loading] kill enemy [loading] walk 5 feet [loading]. I think you get the idea.

  • I could afford a better graphics card for $250 that would allow me to play Oblivion with ease on my PC, and I still wont go for it.

It aint worth the price of a PS3.

  • How may PS3 rapings does this make? 145? The console hasn't been released yet and it's a laughingstock. Great PR job, Sony.

  • Son of a bitch commenting system! 90% of my comments have to have a second post to go through!

  • If any game is worth the price of a PS3, surely it is:

    RRRRRRIDGE RRRRRRRACER!

    //sorry, had to

  • I thought the motion sensitive controller justified the price.

  • Finished it Spring 06 on my 360.

  • Peter Moore had a bit of a RRRRRIDGE RRRRRRRRRRACER moment of his own at the X06 briefing. He got pretty good applause on Sensible Soccer, then announced Doom would be available that night and got a crowd full of silence.

  • "If any game is worth the price of the PS3, Oblivion is it."

I like Oblivion a lot but this is the same as somebody saying, "If any game is worth the price of [supposedly awesome console], [game with lukewarm reception] is it."

  • You are right anima, the game got a luke warm reception... except that every review I have read for it has been absolutly amazing, even with all the 1000s of little bugs and problems.

If you are an RPG fan and somehow DONT own oblivion on PC/360, then this quote is INDEED true... most people would have to spend over 500 to play oblivion really well on a computer... If you were a sony fan, and wanted a ps3, but no games justify the price, I would say get oblivion... its worth it imo.. lol

    or a 360...

  • Face it people, there is no way to justify the $600 pricetag.

  • Yawwwwn. Oblivion PSP? I can't even imagine how clunky and slow this will be. Honestly the only reason I'd ever buy a PSP is for homebrew.

  • "If any game is worth the price of the PS3, Oblivion is it."

    No, no it's not!

the only thing that could justify paying $600 for it is a game staring Jenna Jameson with some sort of suction deviece that vibrates..

    Sorry Vibrators are cool.

  • I'm not sure whats more sad. Waiting for an already released game to arrive on PS3 before buying it, or using a year old game(by the time the PS3 launches in Europe) to justify the purchase of the PS3. Probably the latter.

Seriously though, how many more people are Bethesda expecting to attract? Surely everyone that wanted the game in the first place already owns one of the two existing versions and by the time the PS3 version comes out it will be budget priced on PC at least, if not 360 as well.

As for the PSP game, I expect that Bethesda are smart enough to tailor it to the system's strength, like the mobile phone version that was substantially different but retained the same storyline. I'm interested to see how they're gonna approach it.

  • It's true, there is no justification for the huge price tag - and certainly Oblivion doesn't even come close. Shame on you Sony.

  • At this point the price of the PS3 itself is pretty moot, considering no one but scalpers will be able to purchase them at launch.

  • @thebans

I read that as "a game - Staring Jenna Jameson"

So much creepier that way. After the initial loading screen it's just Jenna all deer in the headlights like.

    40+ HOURS OF GAMEPLAY

  • Maybe the quote was directed at the PSP and not the PS3? It's a simple enough mistake. While I certainly would not agree with it, that makes a lot more sense as a comment.

  • That quote really sums up how out of touch the people who qualify these things are.

  • If any game is worth the price of the PS3, Oblivion is it.

I thought that's how they tried to sell the Xbox360 too, and that wasn't worth it either...

  • Another case of stupid hyperbole. Meh. It -is- worth getting Oblivion as a launch title for the PS3: Having a bug-free release with a ton of extras would add some nice variety to the line-up, and it is one helluva massive game.

And granted, I -am- intrigued at what they'll do with it on the PSP.

  • PSP Oblivion? I should start loading now if I want to play it on launch day.

  • They need to get working on Fallout 3. Screw their stupid franchise and it's generic munchkin fantasy. WE WANT VAULT 13!!!

    /endrant

I really dont dislike Morrowind / Oblivion. I had the original Arena, and played it quite a bit. However, Bethesda now have the rights to FALLOUT. WORK! NOW!

  • Meh, I didn't like Oblivion on 360.

PS3 so far only has one interesting game to me... White Knight.

But damn I wish they'd get rid of that Knight-mech summon...

    So gay...

  • What does it say about the PS3 when the Official PLAYSTATION Magazine is scrambling to try to justify the insane price?

  • Also, it is strange that the magazine would choose Oblivion over White Knight Story.

  • @ Scourge - I don't think White Knight Story is a launch game... Is it?

I think they're talking about launch titles specifically.

  • Oh. Never mind, then. There really isn't much at launch for the PS3, then. Sometimes it seems like Sony is trying really hard to destroy the PS3.

  • white knight story is about a year away now...

Their point is thatt here really isn't a single game that screams "awesome" that is comming out within the first 6 months... Oblivion however, is right up there..

  • Bethesda just died a little in my heart...

  • Knotch one mark in the pro column for PS3. It will stand alone, in awe of the cons.

  • So if Oblivion gets released in Spring 2007 on PSP, then it should be done loading by sometime in early Fall 2007?

  • Nah, Vexorg, Fall 2007 is when we'll see the patch for PSP's Oblivion released.
