Rockstar Games announced today that they would be shipping a "Special Edition" of their upcoming Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 sequel Grand Theft Auto IV for a cool $90. That's not a typo, that's $90. Ninety. Dollars. While that may sound to some like a complaint, it's merely sticker shock. As someone who's a fan of limited edition packaging, the collector's version actually sounds like a quality, appropriately imagined product, perfect for the game's hinted-at smuggling theme.
The GTA IV Special Edition package will contain the videogame, naturally, an exclusive soundtrack CD, official art book, plus a Rockstar-branded duffel bag and keychain, all shipped in a metal safety deposit box. Sure, it's $30 more than the regular version, but this sounds cool. Even better than the Bully premium boxed set from last year.
Obviously, it's not for everyone. Me? I'll be looking down my nose at you regular version types come October. For now, I'm off to the yacht club! See ya! (Psst. Press release down there.)

Sure, gloat because you get sent one for free weeks before it's released. That'll make us all feel reeeeal good.
What a rip off. D:<
They should take the gobs of money they saved by recycling their GTAIII years beyond its prime and use it to drop the price.
Whoops meant GTA III graphics engine but I seem to have forgotten to add that
This makes me glad I didn't pre-order yet.
Schweet. I'll be shelling out hundreds of euro's for a console when IV comes out, so i can handle the extra 30.
This is probably the only game ever of which i consider myself a "fan".
Dammit Rockstar and your limited editions. You knew my one weakness.
Pictures?
I think I'm becoming a LE whore.
I'm not sure what the hoo-har is about some of the 'special edition's these days, an art book for GTA? I bet there's some incredible drawings of a prostitute getting KO'd with a baseball bat there.
Each to their own I guess :)
@Raynre: Hahahahahahaha. I'm laughing at this assumption. Wait, now I'm starting to cry. Believe you me, I'll be lighter $90 + tax in the wallet this fall.
So I'll be paying $90 for this, $130 for Halo 3 and go knows how much for Bioshock. Let the LE ass raping begin.
Sold! Seeing what the new John Woo game will include in its collector's edition for us PS3 owners, I wonder if the special edition will include the HD version of the GTA movie directed by Ron 'Opie' Howard. That would be something, LOL.
@MrAwesome: If that's a complaint, I suggest you stop bending over.
Damn, I guess I'm going to have to buy this too. I don't even like the previous GTA games. But the trailer was sweet and LE set sounds even sweet.
Between this and Halo 3, I'm already out $220 plus tax this fall... damn.
@McWhertor: Oh, that's right, I'm thinking of Bashcraft as the one that gets all of the fun stuff. I keep getting you all mixed up...
@jsin007: My local game store once had a prepackaged deal with the DVD of that film and GTA2. I don't think it sold too well.
Man I dont think i'll be able to resist this.
Ive started to not care about LE's like for Halo 3 and Bioshock, but this one sounds hot.
Japanese LE cost more so these sound cheaper. Some Japanese LE can go really high...like Xenosaga Episode 1, Metal Gear Solid 3 =-3
A duffel bag? Oh man, I have to hide my stubby from my Mum!
@NitrousO:
Ummm, I thought they were using the new engine used in Table Tennis.
As for this "limited edition" nonsense, I'm going to have to call "sucker!" on anyone who buys into it.
What a bunch of useless garbage. But that's just my opinion.
@cringer8: They are using RAGE for GTA IV. I guess he's referring to the fact that they used Renderware in GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, The Warriors, Max Payne II, Bully and Manhunt. It really isn't that big a deal. This generation is going to have a ton of games using UE3.
"top artists" ? you mean the shit some people call music?
and I just realized, I love the art of gta, but not my kinda art for an artbook.
and i WAS thinking about getting this release until I noticed those two things.
Yuck.
Ill buy it but I wish they something else to the CE. $80 sounds like the rite amount for this CE, not $90.
Um... rip off. Even if ur a collector... rip off. The price is really off to the point of extortion.
Will buy the regular version, but now my interest in the company has gone down slightly. Atleast have something worth the price.
Unless it has a helmet I can put on my cat, they can keep it.
I want a topographic metal version of the game world map, with embossed lettering.
@DarrenC: ha! yeh, I'm really sure your interest in GTAIV has gone down because they violated some moral pricing scruples you hold companies to.
USD$90 isn't that bad, considering that normal price of games here in Australia is like AUD$100, ive seen some dodgy...DODGY ps3 games go for like AUD$120 as well o_O.
Been trying to find out where to pre-order this, its not on the take two site anyone know?
Neat. The soundtrack CD would probably be more appealing if they'd announced any of the bands that are going to be on the soundtrack, though.
Thing most people seem to ignore is that it's $30 more for a LE, which as far as I've seen is pretty standard fare.
I usually don't fall for these "Special Editions" but this one sounds like it might actually appeal to me.I hope the safety deposit box is real metal and has a lock on it.:)
Better deal than that lousy $120 Halo 3 mini helmet which imo screams money wasted and useless, unless of course you have a cat into playing paintball..
In my opinion, $30 is not a lot of money and I think a lot of people will be attracted to order this version...including me :)
Seems like the software companies are yet again testing the waters for a price increase.
The limited edition craze at the end of last generation gave the developers the impression that a decent percentage of consumers would fork out an extra $10 for games.
The $49.99 price standard to the $59.99 price standard happened pretty fast. I'm not necessarily complaining. I'm just saying that this is what consumers are implying when they pay $130 for a game and a helmet made out of 5 cents of plastic, or a game and a sound track that costs them practically nothing to produce since they already bought the rights to the music anyway.
I don't buy limited editions of games personally, I'd rather put that extra cash towards gaming snacks/ beers or what have you. None of the collectors edition games in the past two generatinons ever became collectors items today anyway...
the only games I can think of that are considered collectors items are Panzer Dragoon Saga, Borderdown or Radiant Slivergun, and they didn't hype themselves up as being that way to begin with.
Look past the marketing people.
I bit for the middle-tier Halo 3 edition, but this? lol no way. GTA isn't the type of story and world I really care enough about to want to own all the periphary stuff. I only need what's on the disc.
Going with the trend of special editions, spending $90 will be the only way to get the PC version on DVD. $50-$60 will still only get you a stack of CDs... in 2007.
^I don't understand your comment, then again I gave up PC gaming a while ago.
Are you saying they charge more for DVD software than they do for including a ridiculous amount of CDs in the box?
Vice City and San Andreas had amazing, and rather large, soundtracks. If GTA4 holds to the same standard, then the CD alone will be worth the extra price.
Does the metal box come with a small bag of cocaine? Cause if so... SOLD!
Hrm..the single and poor person in me says this is stupid but the whore in me says I have to go to gamestop.

@Rioracer916: While other countries apparently have moved on, in the US, most games are still released on CDs while the DVD is a bullet point for the special edition. It's annoying.
I'm holding out for the ultra-exclusive $4,999 edition with the custom "GTA IV LYF" grills designed by Paul Wall.
The $90 price tag is pretty steep, but you get quite a bit of cool stuff for that extra money. Much better than the "soundtrack and making-of DVD" collectors editions out there. However, I usually only buy the special edition versions of games I really, really like, and as much as I enjoyed the last GTA, I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan of the series. I'll wait for some pics of the swag and an artist list for the soundtrack before making my decision. But as far as I know, there's not much else coming out in the fall that appeals to me, so I might just spring for it.
So for $90 I can buy GTAIV and a bunch of random stuff that won't enhance the game at all...or I can buy the game itself and spend the extra $30 on some XBLM content. Yeah, I like option 2 better also.
Limited Editions are the big craze right now, with everybody apparently trying to outdo one another.
I can't wait for the LE MGS4 which comes with your own AK47 and wheel mounted chicken-robot camera thing. Of course, you'll have to get your own friend to work the coms on the other end (unless you spend another $160,000/year for the Mega Deluxe Foxhound version)
Geez, $90, so not worth it. I can kinda understand the Halo 3 SE, since it has a game holder/stand and cat helmet- but this isn't worth it.
@Rioracer916: Well, hopefully we see some limited editions popping up that contain snacks and beer. Now THAT would be worth my 90. Would need to be a decent amount of said snacks and some quality beer though.
@Rioracer916
Yes, that's exactly what happens here. You have to pay $10 to $20 more for a DVD in some "Collectors Edition" package for most PC games. Pisses me off.
@Mommar:
That's absolutely ridiculous. No wonder I fell out of PC gaming, whether it is software or hardware it seems to be more expensive than console gaming with less game genres to choose from.
However, Starcraft 2 on the other hand is my excuse to junk this machine and build a new one.
:-D
'twas delayed.... tut tut tut.... BUT ONLY 8 DAYS NOW!!
