Four New BioShock Plasmids Coming?

curious.gif People are curious. We poke at shit, it's what we do. That goes double for internet types, and double double for internet gaming types, who simply will not rest until they've scrounged through every last line of code in a new game, looking for hidden secrets and spoiling PR and marketing parties the world over. Take BioShock, for example. Some cats have gone through the code of the PC version and found reference to four new plasmids, which form part of a "Downloadable content anouncement". The four plasmids are "Machine Buster", "Vending Expert", "Sonic Boom" and "EVE Saver". Vending Expert sounds handy, but Sonic Boom? Sounds like plain old-fashioned good times.

  • Hopefully they don't come for another month or so that I will have a working 360 so I can get them.

  • Plasmids as a DLC :S
Thats quite minor for a game the size of Bioshock IMO.

But without MP and being a shooter I guess thats all they could do :P

  • Well it really does not matter because once you download the update (which I advise you not to) the game becomes unplayable with massive load times and framerate issues of catastrophic proportion. I need to remove the update because the game was fine until I downloaded the forced update from live. I actually thought I had a problem with my 360 but I threw a couple of other games in and they worked without a hitch!

  • I Must Say This For My Sake: I Hope Thems Is Free!

  • So does that mean that they are already in the game and we just need to pay to unlock them? Rip.

  • Man I hope they dont pull a Bethsoft on us. That still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Won't buy anything from them again, even despite how good Oblivion was(though bland and repitious after a few monthes).

Nickel and Diming us the customers is a bad, baaaad thing.

  • I'm hoping for even more plasmids, like Tiger Uppercut and Spinning Bird Kick.

  • Can I get the 'Punch into the chest and remove a still beating heart, then crush it in front of the victim's eyes' plasmid?

  • If anything, the plasmids in Bioshock were too repetetive and a lot were not very useful. If anything, they should have had way less plasmids, but made them more unique and useful.

Fire, ice, electricity... it's all very standard fare. There's a lot they could have done that would have made things more interesting rather than so down-the-line. Just because they call them plasmids instead of magic, and EVE injections (with stabbing animation) instead of mana potions, that doesn't make them more original, interesting or indeed "mature".

Nope, I want more interesting powers, but less of 'em. Quality over quantity, please.

  • @darkowl:

Maybe they gave you the uninteresting ones in release so you'd buy the "cool" ones they've already made and disabled in the game.

  • @darkowl: I agree

I was really pissed off that we couldn't get the houdini plasmid!

  • If you look at the old Bioshock video that was floating around, youd see that you also had a teleportation plasmid, like the Houdini splicers do.

  • Yeah I really missed teleportation too, and I'm sad it's not on this list.

  • @DB9: Unlikely, only Sonic Boom has a training video included in the PC version. Meaning most likely that it was supposed to be included, but was cut for one reason or another. Rest have no videos, unless they are hidden in the large resource files... which seems unlikely.

Perhaps much more interesting is the predefined_plasmids.lst-file, in BioShock\Content\System-folder. It would appear to have about 80 plasmids, including the Telerportation that was mentioned earlier.

It also has some fairly intriguing sounding stuff, like "DiseasedExcretions", "HoloGhost", "FastTwitch", "NearSightedCameras", "ShowMeTheCones", "SuperCooledFrozenBullets" and more. :)

  • I understand the Curious George reference to the story, but why the cowboy hat?

  • @ DARKOWL

Enlighten us, what kind of "quality" plasmids would you like to see? All I've noticed from your comment is that some are "repetitive" yet you haven't really given any ideas/solutions.

Personally I found many other plasmids just as useful as the fire/ice/electricity. Enrage was a favourite of mine, especially at the times where you had more than 3 enemies to take care of.

The fact is the other plasmids can be used to make the combat a bit more interesting if you so wish, if you simply want to get through the game doing the shock-wrench combo you could probably do that as well. I like the choice.

Back to the topic, I really hope they don't charge for these :(

  • Screw more plasmids, give me more plot! What happened to Rapture at the end of the game!?

  • This would be awesome for my second play-through, as I'm gonna be evil this time and harvest the Little Sisters.

Although, if this isn't free content, you bet your ass I'm pirating it like all the stuff I have for Oblivion. I will always legally purchase my games, but if I can find my way around smaller content that a company is trying to nickel-and-dime me with, then I will.

I wonder if this is what that craptacular patch was about? You know? The one that made Bioshock unplayable on my 360? The one that took a game that ran flawlessly 2 times through and turned it into a stuttering, hiccuping, freezing mess?

I'm getting really sick of forced updates on the 360 that don't give any details regarding what they're for. If they destroyed the game I paid $60 for to sell me useless plasmids, I'm going to burst. And I don't think that's a good thing. If anything, 2K should send these plasmids out free as an apology for breaking our game.

  • What happens if you set all those falses to true? can you unlock the content now?

  • Image of Antiterra Antiterra at 09:47 AM on 09/06/07 *

Does Sonic Boom come with a brush cut?

  • The update is frakkin' with peoples games? Huh. I didn't notice it. Of course, I was loading a save right at the end, so those who've finished the game know how quickly that goes...

  • Image of PapaBear434 PapaBear434 at 09:49 AM on 09/06/07 *

    @Sloopydrew:

The update was to make it more like the PC version, so you can only play it on that one XBL account.

Why should anyone else in your house play for free?

  • As long as they are free it sounds good.

  • Image of PapaBear434 PapaBear434 at 09:53 AM on 09/06/07 *

Oh, Kotaku, first your server is down for most of the morning, now you won't post my comments.

    Why do you hate me?

/off to Chicago until Monday anyway...

  • What exactly did last nights update do? I couldn't notice anything. I also didn't have any issues with the update.

  • Maybe they'll patch the patch... They should totally pull a Sega and release an 'Evo' edition of the game sans DRM for PC and bugs for 360. I'll be happy to pick up the game if they remove the network dongle, since I have to basically alter the game and/or Wine sometimes to get a Windows game to run in Linux to start with. Hell if I'm going to basically write an out-and-out crack to make it work. That wouldn't be too good for the ol' resume. At this point if Valve gets the Securom removed later it'll play better under Steam in Linux. They need to do a lot of work to repair the image of this title.

Speaking of that someone from Sega was quoted as saying there could be an online patch for VF for PS3. However I'm so jaded from the VF4 on PS2 that I'm almost sure they'll print a new disc and call it 'Evo' eidtion. ^^

  • Does this mean these plasmids were deliberately left out of the game so that they can be used as DLC? That's a worrying precedent.

  • @ryltar:

Using rage was incredibly fun and satisfying.

  • It could be a plasmid that shits 5 dollar bills out of the CD-ROM drive and it still wouldn't be enough to make up the PR relation nightmare that has been the release of this game.

  • @CivilD: It's not a precedent at all. If that was true (that Plasmids were cut to sell as downloads later), 2K would *hardly* be the first game publisher to do that.

  • I submitted this weeks ago from the 360 version, way to be on top of reading your emails.

  • Did anyone else go through and look at everything posted on the link, such as --

    ; [ShockGame.HighPressureEntropicDampening]
; FriendlyName=High Pressure Entropic Dampening Plasmid (Ecology)
; Description=When local pressure is high, your weapons will not degrade

My guess is, like the "Is it coming to PS3?" code, that most of this comes from early in the development of the game when high and low pressure (?) were involved, splicers were called junkers and there were things called drones.

  • I used to break my toys to learn how where build.
    Thats nothing new.

  • @DB9: exactly. come on FREE. If not ill be passing for awhile

  • Unfortunately, this kind of thing may eventually kill any game being released on the PC. Piracy is rampant, illegal mods are being added, hidden information is being exposed, etc. After reading this, if I were a developer I would certainly think twice before I brought my game to the PC. At present, at least, consoles are more secure, and as of yet no one has been able to defeat the security of the 360 (excepting the disc drive mod, which let you play backup's). Of course, you can look at the individual files on a 360 disk, but you can't mod them. Whereas most PC owners are chomping at the bit to get an illegal version of the game which defeats (rightly, or wrongly) the copy protection, most 360 owners simply bought (or rented) and enjoyed the game, giving the developers some financial return on their huge investment. Although I did mod my XBOXes (to play games directly off the harddrive and for XBMC) I have not made any attempt to mod my 360, and really have no plans on doing so. By the way, this is a direct violation of the EULA.

  • @Melting_snowman: oh shit, I want that sonic boom training vid asap

  • @CivilD: You could try to have some faith in games developers. Interviews have stated that the game was massively reworked following focus testing, it could be that these plasmids were found to be either too powerful, too useless, or not as in keeping with the style of the game. No-one ever accuses movie companies of deliberately cutting scenes from feature films so they can sell you the Special Edition DVD or Directors Cut... it's just in the nature of the work that things will get cut, but aftersale stuff like DLC lets peolpe go back and have a look afterwards. The DLC just nicely delays/seperates them from the main game.

  • frankly, this sounds like one plasmid (sonic boom) and three tonics...maybe the machine buster is a plasmid too, but EVE saver and vending expert must be tonics for sure.

  • @bornonce:

LOL this sort of thing gets me laughing all the time... less piracy on 360? i dunno about you boyo but just becouse you dont see it dousent mean it isent there, its in every flea market, every major city you just need to know where and who and when.

PC piracy is easier as its pretty much easy to do by yourself, no middleman involved, and sometimes you need a profit on a game the 360 just wont sell.... like a good RTS game (definition of good is anything lacking an EA sign)

  • Is there a plasmid that strips the game of DRM?

  • I believe the patch has removed some of the noises when you are hacking and changing tonics and plasmids at the gene bank not sure why!? anyone else have the same? Havent noticed any issues with frame rate though..

  • Image of doubtful doubtful at 11:56 AM on 09/06/07 *

Hopefully it is a sign of an expansion. I'd love to explore more of Rapture. Obviously it's much bigger than what was seen in game.

  • It's hard to use the sonic boom plasmid effectively, since you have to walk backwards for two seconds and then forward and shoot at the same time. When it hits, though, it's pretty sweet. I'm hoping there will be a mod that will add the flash kick plasmid.

  • MAN, people love to bitch!

  • Gametrailers just did a 2-part interview with the developers in which they mention some of the plasmids(including Halo-shield and Spider-Man web launcher), enemies and levels that were cut from the final game.

  • Agreed with Isaac above that this is pathetic whining. The game rocks. This (if true) would also rock. The end.

  • I've already played the game. Why would I download these? But heh if its free who cares? Free stuff is always good.

  • awesome trick by Ken Levine and squad...
they DID know someone would end up browsing though their code, so why not place something interesting right there

IMHO, expect no more plasmids... it's a joke (great one, too)

  • I'm still waiting on the Hadouken plasmid.

  • The game's a bitch to run in my poor aging rig, but I'm enjoying Bioshock soooo much !!!

  • everybody needs some Guile now and then.

  • LOL plain old fashioned good times.

  • It's nothing new for a developer to code in a game for things that might have been too buggy to be in the final released version. That's why so many PC games tend to have patches on launch day. Most of the code is already in place, the patch just fixes what was causing the bugs.

This was most likely plasmids intended for release, though were either bugged
