Squeenix bossman Yoichi Wada has told the Financial Times that consoles like the PS3 and 360 are rubbish. Complete crap! Too complex! Not enough people playing them! It's the DS that's where it's at:
There are too many specs - and you also need a high-definition TV, a broadband connection and a deep knowledge of gaming - these consoles are mismatched to today's environment. In a year or two years they will fare better.
Which is why Dragon Quest IX will be turning up on the DS and not a home console - "We chose the Nintendo DS because the widest array of people use it, including people who previously did not play games before".
So handhelds drive the market, then, at least for now. Why, then, is DQIX the only big-name franchise to be moving to handhelds, and not just releasing spin-offs or re-releases? That can't last. Sooner or later some other publisher is going to look at the DS installed base compared to that of the home consoles and say "Oh. We should do that too".
Handhelds drive games market, says Enix chief [Financial Times]
