Skate Video Tickles The Funnybone

I don't skate. Can't, my body just will not cooperate. Don't really follow it, either, but I do own several DVDs devoted entirely to skateboarders crashing/stacking/grievously harming themselves. Don't know why, but I just find it really, really funny. EA know what I'm talking about.

  • I don't follow it either, however, I used to be a big Tony Hawk mark. Then the series decided to become all Jackass like...

  • Remember the "bails" video from Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2? Classic.

  • I love how the last clip has some dude run up to him and knock him off the board. Just like real life!

  • It seems like when they fall off they're in a static arms-out position. In my experience watching the X-Games real boarders don't fall like that...

  • so many lols

  • I think EA watched Rise of the Silver Surfer too many times, since once the skater leaves the board he loses his powers and seemingly his life.

  • @ShatteringLast: no kidding i laughed so hard..

    CLOTHESLINE OF DOOM!!!!

  • Yeah, those guys are dead the second they leave the board. I mean, they're not even trying to break their fall.

  • @Morpork:
Well yea, but you don't see many skaters go buck wild before they crash. Bails and crashes happen too fast for most skaters so what you see is them falling like a doll into things. It's not like they are going to pull a front flip and avoid danger.

  • It still has the rag doll sort of affect (though a little better here), but the hits are still pretty crazy despite this.

  • @Zharay: I used to skate for a few years and the more you fall the more you learn how to break the fall and it becomes even more natural. One thing I know for sure was to not break the fall with your face, like these guys do! :)
I really like the animations in Skate, but the bail anims are a bit of a let down. It works sometimes, but sometimes not. It does make for some funny clips though and one thing is for sure; I'll be making a ton of funny bail clips when I buy this game.

  • Yeah, those are some really creepy actions when they fall. I expect arms out in front or something, that's what happens to me when I trip or whatnot. Just going limp? Weird and disturbing.

  • Video is definitely a good laugh and enjoyable. I personally have been addicted to the demo. I need something far different than the Hawk series which is becoming very old and stale.

Skate brings something new, fresh and fun to the table. Can't wait until Tuesday to pick it up.

  • I've tried everything on wheels, cept for a unicycle, im not crazy. And skateboarding was the hardest, I never was very good at it and much preferred inline skating or cycling. Also as bad as those spills make look I found falling down or crashing to be much worse on a bike, and even on inline skates. When you fall while roller blading you just have this unshakeable instinct to try and extricate yourself from the skates and then come to the sad realization that they are attached to you.

  • Any early reviews of this yet?

  • You what is really missing in this great looking game? The ability to control the skaters body after he/she leaves his skate and enters the "I screwed up" animation ... wouldnt it it be great to be ablet o control his/her arms and legs when he/she is falling on his/her face? :-)

  • I have no interest in this game, but at least they used Bad Brains in this video and in the 360 demo.

  • Lets use the worst looking aspect of the game as the basis for a trailer!

  • The animation is too floaty. When skaters get thrown they hit the ground fast and hard. Some of these make it seem like they were shot in the back and then went to slo-mo.

  • Lol so nasty.

  • Not the best of rag doll physics, but it gets the job done in a humorous manner!

  • Thats actualy the only thing that really dissapointed me in the demo, the ragdoll physics simply suck. body falls in an unrealistic way and doesnt behave normaly at all with it looking like a plastic dummy when hitting the ground.

weird since games have been doing this allright for a couple of years now.

    .

I've been a skater a long long time. I've been a videogamer even longer. I have this to say:

EA SKATE is the first killer app on the X360! Bioshock? More of the same. Gears of War? Pretty cool. Rumble Roses XX? No story mode.

    EA SKATE is ground-breaking.

  • They should have an added story mode, whereby when you crash and injure yourself you can sue the local council for not making the pavement safe enough for skateboarders.

  • is there a story mode by the way ?

  • I found it entertaining despite the somewhat muted rag-doll animations. And for people who think they fall too slow, just speed up the replay when you capture it. It doesn't solve the spread-eagle syndrome, but it will help make it look that much more painful.

  • You know that one where the skater takes a dive sliding off the rail in a downward fashion? Had a bad expierence like that once and that's why I don't skate much anymore. I like the way this game is turning out though. And as for Tony Hawk, I haven't played one of those games since the first one and that stupid "Superman" song from the warehouse level still gets stuck in my head from time to time.

  • EA has brilliantly tapped in to the "I hate skaters and want to hurt them" demographic. All that's left to do now is make the game appealing to the largest demographic, the "I don't give a rat's ass about skating" group. My prediction is the last second addition of breast physics and/or guns of some kind. Toss in some more awful licensed music, and they might just have a mainstream hit on their hands.

Mr. Plunkett you have an excellent taste in humor.

    ---

I remember while playing THP8 I was amusing myself when bored by seeing what kind of terrible accidents I could cause.

Looks like Skate though has better ragdoll physics for the spills. Looking foward to fucking myself up good in that game when it hits the shelves! ;D

  • I just love how one dude jumps another dude's lifeless body. It's so perfect, and something that can only happen in a game. In real life, you'd be all "Holy shit Jeff just smashed his face into a railing! Fucking call an ambulance! Fuck shit fuck!" but in this it's all "Haha oh man Jeff totally just ran into a rail. Watch this, I'm going to go do a heel flip over him."

Effective. I will now be downloading the demo because of this video.

  • My favorite was the guy who ollies/grinds the picnic bench, only to be taken out by another skater flying over him and clipping his skull. Good times!

  • I don't trust people who like to watch those videos. It's one step from gore porn like Hostel, which is one step from real snuff films like Faces of Death. Enjoy Hell.

  • Schadenfraude.

I need to get that as a tattoo.

Oh, and thechaz... the difference between faces of death and Hostel? One is real, one is fake. Difference between America's Funniest Home Videos and pain of a love one caught on film? About $10,000 or a free t-shirt.

  • That was hilarious.

  • Im starting to get tired of rag doll physics. Im tired of everyone turning into a limp corpse the second they get hit. It just looks weird. Get hit in the leg? Okay im knocked out and will just let my face fall towards the floor. Look at the one at 52 seconds. He just seems to fall off his board as though he just fainted.

I like the fact Far Cry 2 is trying to do a hybrid where it is a mix of rag doll and animation. Seems much better.

skate is kinda weird. It has to be the only EA game where people are sticking up for it as the little guy. Are they not aware of who EA are?

@TheChaz: Kinda agree about Hostel. I don't get it. It isn't a horror movie, it's just seeing how much gore people can take/enjoy.

  • That was awesome.

  • Ragdoll physics aren't funny anymore.
