Sega Doubts Wii, Hitches Skirt For PS3

Everyone loves the Wii, right? You, me, old people, soccer moms, kids, Frenchmen, the works. It's all the rage. Right? Maybe not for long, says Sega's American marketing VP Scott Steinberg:

I am a little concerned about the creative depth of the Wii pool. I'm not sure if they will top out in 2008 or 2007.

The Wii will start to look really dated in a couple years when developers get more value from the 360 and learn more and more about the PlayStation 3.

Wait. There's more. It wouldn't be Sega if there wasn't a further element of self-harm to it now, would it?

But how much value can developers and creative folks get out of this wrist motion two years from now, or 5 years from now, or 10 years from now? How can they design products that aren't too derivative of what's already out there?

OK Scott. So you're not big on the Wii. Don't know why you need to go hating on it, but got it. So who are you betting the farm on?

We know the PS3 pool is pretty deep. There's a lot to exploit there.

Oh Sega! Burning bridges to the biggest and fastest-selling console on the market! You so kuh-razy! No, really. These kind of comments are fucking, needlessly nuts.

  • And they went down, down, down in a burning ring of fire...

  • whatever, he's a guy with an opinion. he seems to be speaking rationally. i don't agree with him, but i don't think he'snuts.

  • sounds like deja vu personally, "playstation? yeah right its all about the 32x deeper richer sprits!"
fun fact: 32x and playstation launched on the same day in japan.

  • @MarkPhoenix:

But that's borderline console bashing... which is something fanboys do, not VICE PRESIDENTS of FINANCIALLY HURTING developers.

  • Maybe in his position he shouldn't be making comments like that, but I totally agree with him.

  • Okay, this is just ludicrous... and his statement can be disproven in a number of ways:

    1) You do NOT need to use motion control. There are classic controllers and non-motion using functions on this console... please get that into your heads developers. You will only get bad games if you solely concentrate on the motion controls.

    2) Derivative? We've been using the same controller design for coming on 10 years now. Why would people be tired of the derivative games on the Wii when we're still getting good (but control derivative) games on the PS2, 360 and PS3?

    3) You're concerned about the creative depth of the Wii pool? What you mean is that you can't innovate in gameplay and can only make graphics better.... i suppose the sonic franchise is a good example of this. The creative depth of games is the onus of the developers, not the hardware. Suck it up and get creating Sega.... Life is not about graphics.

    4) Graphics do not matter if the gameplay is still good. Many people still play older consoles and old PC games. People are still happy with PS2 and xbox quality graphics on their TV's. Wii is around the power of the Xbox so what's the problem here? It's not like you're developing for the NES...

Developers are really starting to piss me off with their stupidity...

  • @knuxsonic: Bingo. Man's entitled to have an opinion, just like the rest of us, but the dudes VP of marketing for one of the world's biggest third-party publishers.

Which makes these comments FUCKING NUTS.

  • I still refuse to listen to a company that barely stays afloat by making games with quality so low, that even Uwe Boll won't make a movie out of them. Ironically, their best game in the last couple years was Sonic for the Wii.

  • Someone, in the sega building, Sonic is screaming WHEN WILL YOU STOP RAPING MY CORPSE.

  • Wait, whats all this being said? All I got out of this post was "damn, that girl be havin' a huge badonkadonk..."

  • LOL! You gotta LOVE Sega! Really! XD They almost ALWAYS make the wrong decisions and bet on the wrong horse. If Sega's already jumping ship to PS3, that's a bad, BAD sign for Sony! XD Not to point fingers, but you COULD make the argument that Sega's bad luck didn't exactly help the GC way back when they were real Pro-Nintendo. At least when they went multi-platform, they spread their bad luck around to where it only really did damage to Sega. But betting on Sony? Yeah... That's a bad sign. Perhaps it'd be in Sony's best interest to try and push them back onto the Wii. XD

  • Pressing buttons? What a fad. Analog sticks? D-pad all the way! Rumble? Disc-based games? Fast loading carts will be around forever! Rumble? Lifeless feedback for life!

  • Also, when the hell are they going to come out with more games like Otogi. Both of them rocked and were top notch quality. Those games prove that "From Software" is capable of great games, when Sega lets them. Most likely Sega just rushes them or doesn't give them enough funds most of the time.

  • Damn Kotaku, you quoted a total of 7 sentences, so I dont know why are you acting like he gave some 2 hour long speech on it.

Its his opinion and most people seem to believe the same thing and till now no one has seemed to prove that wrong with the Wii still looking like a mini game and GC port machine.

  • We thought the Great War was over, that we had settled our differences after generations of unbridled hatred. We thought that common enemies had united us against them, and that the War was a relic of the past.

    We were wrong.

  • Ah yes Scott Steinberg you are so right.
But wait.... you know a lot about this don't you, Mega CD, 32X, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast.
Hmmm Yes sir your opinion is taken onboard cough *twat* cough

  • No anti-Sonic comments with out remember that Nintendo made Mario dance, K? Thanks.

  • Image of DaveKap DaveKap at 02:00 AM on 06/15/07 *

So basically, the pool for Sonic games with horrible load times, bad voice acting, pointless FMVs, and hot Human-on-Animal action is much larger than the pool for Sonic games that have horrible control schemes, worse voice acting, repetitive gameplay, and terrible plot.

    I hear that!

  • kotaku, do you know why the ps3 isnt selling?

because of the small game library.

mabye, just mabye sega wants to help the ps3 by developing some games for it, and once it rolls out some games, the ps3 will sell more.

and i see that you asks yourselves why the ps3 and not the 360 or wii?

because they know that the ps3 is actuallly a more powerful and benefitial machine.

and thats what theyre talking about, the deep pool to be exploited is undiscovered power of the ps3.

    nice picture though, nice touch.

  • Oh no he didnt! Kotaku needs a spinoff blog purely for trashtalking that goes on in the videogame industry.

  • @Tkrulez: Right. But we'll see those. Just as we're starting to see actual, desirable games out of the PS3 camp too. Is it also going to top out in 2007 or 2008 when the market shares start to decide future development?

This guy's the American VP, NOT the Japanese one. This guy might just be speaking like an idiot because he likes certain games, or because he's been reading about how Sammy-Sega has been improving its financial position and suddenly thinks that gaming development is going to triple, so hey! We'll support that expensive console, maybe we can get some Sony moneys or incentives!

Besides, uh... I haven't played anything good from Sega in.. mmm...

  • @mmx: Fun... Can we get someone else to say this though. Maybe this is code that the Sonic v. Mario Wii game has been canceled. Nintendo must have wanted to gimp Sonic in the running and jumping while running and possibly the ice skating and downhill snowboarding events.

Seriously though, it's Sega. It doesn't matter. Tomorrow (meaning any day from now) they might start saying that the 360 has the biggest possibilities and they're jumping ship once more.

Who knows though, maybe they might actually start making good games again on PS3.

    ...

Yeah didn't think so either. Sony, can I get some fall games already? I'd surely enjoy playing me some Warhawk.

  • I love the sound of exploring the "depth" of the PS3. Im really counting on Sega making yakuza 3 PS3 exclusive :).

Its really ironic that the best new IPs in the PS2's life are coming in its last living years.

  • @ampillion: I should add, he could be speaking like an idiot because he's american, and us americans are good at braindead, speaking-out-of-our-ass syndrome.

Hell, talk out of my ass all the time. Speculatoooooor, hoooo!

  • Well thats what everyone said about the DS, but right now is winning, and actually no one has even reach the full potential of the DS, right now the 2007 yugioh game has the option to update and download new things from the ds wifi network, and eve nintendo said that the ds cart can handle 512mb in data and the largest games only use 128mb, so the ds still has a lot to offer, tha same with the wii because is just starting, and maybe sega dont want pools of cash...

Dear Developers, Administrators, and Management Individuals in the Game Industry,

I hate to have to remind you, yet again, but I guess you simply don't listen, or have the attention span of a mayfly, or are retarded, or whatever, so here it is again:

GAMING ISN'T ABOUT HARDWARE. GAMING IS ABOUT GAMEPLAY. HARDWARE IS IRRELEVANT.

Now at last count that is the 3,63SEVENTH time I've had to remind you idiots of this fact. Next time, I won't even bother. I'll just put you out of our collective misery, Of Mice and Men style.

Please, PLEASE stop saying stupid things. It would be such a change for the better.

    Sincerely,
-Everyone who is not you. Or a fanboy.

  • Sega reminding everyone why it failed.

  • @ampillion: He was too busy watching the Daily Show and laughing at the latest antics of our favorite sitcom "The Bushies."

And this my friends, is exactly WHY sega doesnt make money anymore.

  • Scott Steinberg seems a little too eager for the PS3. Methinks I smell some money under the table.

Sony might actually be getting the picture and started to give incentives to certain publishers. No proof, and it's just my opinion.

And the PS3 still could make a comeback. Eventually, if they start to using their god, DAMN, BRAINS!!!

  • Hey, you know what would be utterly hilarious come a few years from now? If Sega is actually right about this little statement.

  • Sega's just bitter about the fact that all their 3D Sonic games have sucked arse, and that Nintendo at least had some success with their transition for Mario N64.

That said, I still yearn for a Sonic game that works as well as the PoP Remake coming to XBL.

But hey, with Scott Steinberg spouting rubbish like that, Sega really has no hope does it?

  • This is perfectly sensible, really, it's a guess based on the market. It's fast-selling now, but unfortunately it doesn't mean a lot, and if there's one thing we know about gamers today, it's that they like their characters to have shiny eyeball and their games to have flashy graphics.

I'm bemused to see Kotaku take this line on it, actually. I wouldn't say that siding with Sony was a particularly dangerous thing to do, given their performance in the last two generations of console.

Unfortunately, gaming IS about hardware. The Wiimote is hardware, the Cell processor is hardware, the XBox LIVE system only runs as it does because of a solid hardware base. Three years down the line, we're going to be tapping into parallel processing techniques and multiplayer gaming on a scale that the Wii is unlikely to be able to comprehend.

Now that's not to say the Wii will fail, nor that it should fail, but everyone is hailing it as a new era of gaming, when in actual fact we don't really know how far that stretches. Nintendo ran off the back of a media circus. There's no telling how far the industry will support them. It's not just that Sega 'need' Nintendo - Nintendo needs developers.

  • @Black-Dog-Howls: Except you're still missing the point. He may be right. That's irrelevant. The statements are stupid because it's not such a great idea to bash the most popular console when you're the marketing vice-president of a company that would like to have a good relationship with hardware companies. They're stupid because they're stupid business, not because of their truth.

  • Shut up, guys! The man has a right to an opinion.

  • @Havok154: I mean, you do realize that Uwe Boll's first game to film movie was Sega's House of the Dead, right?

Anywho, yeah, this guy is bonkers to be saying something like that when he's a VP at such a well-known company that's been openly supportive of Nintendo.

Whoever said that this sound like console fanboy logic had it right on the money. What person besides somebody on a gaming message board would say something like this?

  • @mcderek3000: People on Kotaku only think their opinions matter. Read their posts it proves it. Damn, console bashers.

  • The Playstation 2 was great. Lots of brilliant games, inexhuastible gameplay.

That said, it was the worst console of the last-gen, in terms of hardware and graphical output. The thing sold like very hot cakes and still has games appear in the top sales figures week after week. Evidently, the market performance of a console does not rely quite so heavily on it's physical potential, rather the array of games available.

  • I hope this page is still available in a couple years so you can all see how wrong you were. Wiggling your wrist to severely outdated graphics will only get Nintendo so far.

  • @Pyrthas: Didn't say it wasn't stupid, I just think it'd be funny. I'd be more surprised if the industry started saying smart things. That would certainly be cause for concern.

  • This guy sounds like a tool. I mean really. Your company lost a system war to Nintendo, a company that has always known how to be profitable. And not even the PS3 has enough legs to last 10 years. Microsoft will release another system in 5 to 6 years forcing Sony to follow suit. He's just another guy who thinks graphics are the be all, end all.

  • Okay, here's the main question:

Have 3rd party developers done ANYTHING to make Wii games not look dated?

  • Image of BPMμ BPMμ at 02:34 AM on 06/15/07 *

I can understand his confusion about the creative pool in Wii.

Many Wii games have been sloppy PS2 ports. Or somehow manage to look worse than early GameCube games, despite the fact the system is twice as powerful as GameCube. We have yet to see what Wii can really do. And it makes sense: We're only 7-8 months into the system's life. The truly great games take time to make.

As far as PS3's creative pool? Just prettier versions of existing game archtypes, now with tilt.
    I kid, Sony fans.

The fact is, the "creative pool" isn't hardware dependant, but software dependant. You can't honestly tell me Gundam: Crossfire was more "creative" than The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, simply because it was on stronger system hardware.

All systems (even dead ones) are capable of something "new" and "creative." But it's up to the developers to make it, not the hardware manufacturers.

  • I agree with the guy. Seriously, the Wii is going downhill once people get enough of its controller. Then what? They'll pick up the PS3 since teh Xbox 360 is done and knocked out by Sony. Hey Nintendo, enjoy the success while it lasts.

  • @EliasAlucard:
From what it seems, people can't get enough of the controller. Nintendo opened up the market and brought in non-gamers, something Sony couldn't do, and Microsoft saying they want to do. And they are doing it fast! They will reach that magical number for market share in a couple of years that will force developers to make games for them.

The reason the current games out right now are not up to par is that developers got on board late. They have these rushed projects right now. But a company with 50 % market share will be impossible to ignore. Especially when you start looking at their attach rate and see that people want to try different games on the Wii. The Wii has a chance to be the PS2 of last generation.

  • I see all this trash talking about the wii and how crap it performs and how the 360 and PS3 will bring gaming revolutions. I have yet to play any 360 game that could not have been done on the XBox with not as shiney graphics.
We are not playing amazing games that have brought a tremendous leaps in gameplay from the last generation, I have not seen massive advances in AI (Half Life has better AI than most of the games released today) or games with fully destructable environments.

The wii is more than capable of producing quality titles, yes the graphics are crap but that does not matter compared to the innovative titles that could be produced.

  • Eh, Segas dumb. 360 % Wii > PSFail.

    I'm clever, I know.

  • I love reading blog commenters trying to disprove someone that actually works in the industry.

  • VP of marketing aye?

Good job he has just about zero influence on what the company do in relation to development or this might be an opinion worth considering.

  • I need my gameplay with spectacular graphics so I totally agree with his comments, but I still think it would be a bad business decision to ditch the wii when its sales are through the roof (and into outer space).

He should think about making a lot of money for his company as well as working on something creative for the PS3 and the 360 at the same time.
