Rumor: Final Fantasy IV To Get DS Remake?

All the Final Fantasy you can handle! Originally, Final Fantasy IV was developed for the SNES back in 1991. but less than two years ago, the game was ported to the GBA. So this year why not re-make it for the DS? Rumor has it that a 3D remake for the DS is being put together by Matrix Software, the dev behind the 3D FFIII. Should find out more at the upcoming Final Fantasy Party, but until then make a handy chart to track Square-Enix's FF branding bonanza. With all these spin-offs and remakes, am I the only one having trouble keeping up?

  • Even though i like Final Fantasy to a certain degree, im going to laugh when all of a sudden FF sales plummet because everyone is just sick of the constant remakes and spin-offs.
Then Square-Enix will HAVE to put out something original. And not Dragon Quest either

  • I'm not so sure Square is familiar with the word original anymore.

  • Their raping the series, consumers can only handle so much.

Less than 2 years after a re-release is too soon to release a remake.

  • I heard about this earlier today, and if the FF3 DS remake is any good, than I'm REALLY looking forward to this.

FF4 is one of my favorite games in the series, so much so that I own both the SNES version and the PSX edition. However I skipped the GBA version since I didn't want just another, "port with minor upgrades."

Now if Square integrates some of the FF4: Celtic Moon tracks into the actual game, than my fanboy dreams will officially have come true. ;)

  • Umnn....i could be wrong here, but that's not the characters for Final Fantasy IV. I remembered a Black Knight turning White Knight, a green haired summoner, a semi-white mage, dragoon, and a bad looking ninja. =/

  • is square going to remake ff1 to ff6?
i stilll havnt beaten ff3 on ds anyway

  • I love FF, but square COME ON!!!

just give me FFXIII already and be done.

I'll end up buying this as well if it is true though

Id rather have FFV remade. D:

6 would also be highly welcomed.

At this point Im putting my money on Level5 from now on, since they are taking over as the original RPG maker instead of SE.

  • FFIV is my absolute favorite of the series, so after playing the hell out of FFIV Advance, I wouldn't mind playing through a fully 3D remake.

Aside: What significance does Kain Highwind have that he is shown in the logo?

  • why don't they do a Chrono Trigger DS remake. at least they wouldn't be raping the Final Fantasy brandname. and a good number of gamers outside of Japan have yet to experience that game.

  • IV is my favorite of the Final Fantasies. I already own it for SNES and GBA. And I'd buy it again. Damn them.

  • I guess I will be one of the first to say that I am not that into FF...RPG's are not my thing alhtough I played a few like Chrono trigger and some Dragon Quest... But I gotta say that I think this is really wrong... Imagine if ID software made a re-make of the First DOOM almost every year, for every platform... Sure, we all LOVE Doom but I bet that would get to our nerves pretty quick that a company as good as they are milking a franchise so badly it stinks...

  • I'll always welcome remakes over straight ports, but where's the VI? Saving the best for last are they?

  • Well the remakes are for the FF XIII team's hookers and booze fund while its still in development.

  • Remake FFVI and call it a day. Seriously. FFVI was one of the most engrossing games I've ever played, and with updated graphics? It'd be a totally different game.

  • As long as the 6 remake is NEXT GEN and not crappy little 3d chibbis like FF3DS... I want 6 with full voice and FFXIII quality animation and models... A fanboy can dream, can't he? I'll cry if FFVI gets a FF3DS treatment...

    @NewSc2:

  • Next Gen FF6 remake?!? I...I think I just wet myself.

  • Final Fantasy = $$$

Good thing Nintendo doesn't remake every Mario game every month. Oh wait...

  • If this is true, I'm going to be so glad I didn't pick up that GBA port.

  • While the FFIII remake made sense (since it never made it out of Japan), this seems a little much. I don't care myself, since I never played a FF game until the FFIII remake. I liked it a lot, so I will buy any remake they release :)

I guess that's why they keep rehashing these games. Me.

  • @DJ-of-E: That's the Japanese logo they've used since the SFam release actually.

As far as the remake goes... I'm scared of the FF3 DS team. They trashed that game. The new graphics were one thing. The changing of several other things were expected. But some of the problems the game had (load time, not using the top screen for something helpful in many areas, etc) were rather annoying. All in all I lost interest in the DS version before I got as far as I usually go in the Famicom version. I was quite disappointed in the whole remake.

  • So, I've never played an FF game. I bought I&II for the GBA, but was not able to get into either one (didn't try too much, though).

Which FF game is the best? Which should I buy? Is the FFIII remake for the DS any good for newbs, or is it just a fanservice?

  • You furries got what you deserve. Eternal entrapment in REMAKE HELL!

  • Hey it's that whacky wizard type guy from He-Man

  • I wouldn't mind buying these remakes if they would release them on a different system even if it was just the PS2. I really wish they would give XBLA some FF loving by porting the GBA versions of some of the FF games. I would really love to see some 360 and PS3 remakes of FF6 and FF7. Heck they could remake either using the FF10 or FF12 engine and I would be a happy gamer.

@L_K_M: FF4 is the one that got me hooked but FF6 is the shining star of the series IMHO.

  • @L_K_M: FFIII is a great game, but it's a bit brutal. The lack of save points and the difficulty might not make it the best for a non-FF player. That said, the series was just getting its legs with I-III, and I think IV-V is really where Final Fantasy comes into its own. For pre-3D, I recommend one of those or VI, but everyone has their favorite of the three so I'd rather not open up a can of worms-4isthebest-and claim that if you only play one, make it _____.

For Playstation and beyond FFs, if you like a fantasy setting, go with IX, and if you're into futuristic stuff, go with VIII before you become a elitist bastard and claim that it's inferior to VII. If you like a mix of worlds, FFX is good, and if you want something faster paced, FFXII is your ticket.

  • cecil rydia kain golbez palom porom tellah yang fusoya rose fuck cant remember the princes name or the ninjas ummmmm henry and edge I think.
anyway bar none my favorite of all the final fantasies period.and perhaps the sole reason for me to get a ds. what can i say ff2 is my happy place.By the wat isnt it about time that they made a final fantasy rpg that lives up to its name,
    heres my pitch,
you play a decrepit dieing old man who wants to carry out his final deviant sexual wish, i.e His final fantasy.hmmmmmmm
okay I know I know.....ill work on ti

  • I remember back not too long ago (Like back when Advent Children hadn't been announced) that I had a certain fondness for SE. I can't say that anymore. Spin-offs, ports, and re-makes have made me all but lose interest in the company.

I say that, but I do plan on buying Revanant Wings, and based on how I feel about that game, I'll see if I care enough to dabble in anymore spin-offs. Otherwise it'll be regular FFs only.

  • @RykinPoe, @Elly: Thanks, I'll look into these.

  • I remember FFIV with the underground burlesque house, turning in pigs/frogs/midgets after being drugged, a crazy dancer who at the end of their dance rips her clothes off, slaughtering of evil monster parents..good times! I'd like to see them pull off a remake. :P

  • Anything to give me an excuse to play FFIV again.

  • For those pining for FFVI, it was just released for the GBA in February. A remake now makes this cash in of IV look good

  • Hardly my favourite in the series, the characters seemed rather bland. The story did have one nice turn, that Cecil and Golbez are brothers, but the whole Zeromus thing needed at least some foreshadowing. FFV had a much more progressively thought out story and the characters, although hardly memorable, were there most of the game (although Galuf is much better than Cara in my opinion) so you at least grew attached to them.

I'd rather an FFV remake please SE. A decent Mana game would be nice as well, SD3 would be perfect for porting to the DS.

  • Pretty exciting, I'd probably have mixed feelings if they ever announced a Final Fantasy VI remake.

  • Ah, finally, something that's NOT FFVII.

  • Remake sucks, you want to play the old game? Well guess what? Just play the old game.

I like enhanced 2d sprites or graphic filters though.

  • &%#&*@! Zeromus - I still have this GBA cart in my DS after having tried to kill Zeromus about 94537 times and failing, which I guess either speaks to the quality of the game or I AM TEH KRAZY.

  • Actually IV is one of the few FF's that I havn't finished, so this one has alot of value in my book. But, as was said before, I hope it's not as brutal as the FFIII remake. I went through the crystal tower, top to bottom, like 100 times trying to level up. Before finally beating the final boss.

  • Mixed feelings, but really, the FFIII remake was really good, aside from the game itself being sort of "meh" after a while. FFIV is a lot better than FFIII, so I think a remake could be pretty good.

Though, I do agree, in the context of everything else Squenix is doing to Final Fantasy, it's getting a bit ridiculous at this point.

  • Personally, I LIKE the remakes. It gives us players not swayed by the overhyped and overrated FFVII (and beyond... up to XIII, and yes, I say it will be shit even though next-to-nothing has been released about the game, that's how I feel about Squeenix nowadays) something else to gnaw on. A remake of IV would be glorious, and seeing as it is allegedly Matrix Software that would be handling it if such a project exists, I am already salivating.

  • Perhaps Square-Enix has been hanging out too much with Midway's Steve Allison.

Remakes and ports are one thing. They can be awesome for sure. A little nostalgia on a current system is a good thing. But when you're ports/remakes are outnumbering new games like 8-1 that's a bad thing. And when you are porting the same game for the 3rd time.....

At least Last Revenant could break up some of the monotony. And Mana Heroes looks to be prety good.

As far as the people asking what FF is best, I'd say this one FFIV or FFVI.

  • Wake me for the Shin Megami Tensei DS updates.

  • With all the remakes and sequels now that SquareEnix is churning out, can we finally agree that Final Fantasy has jumped the shark?

Honestly, I like the GBA remakes because I had never had a chance to play the originals...but now a DS remake of a GBA remake of a SNES game? When the remake's only been out for a year or so?

    Urgh...

  • Why all the FF games? Why not Chrono Trigger? Come on!

  • Okay so the rational side of me thinks SQuenix is going overkill with the FF remakes and feels that the love needs to be spread amongst other franchises. Dragon Quest had their 20th Anniversary last year and what did they do? Announce DQ IX. That's great and all but pales in comparison to the overkill they're doing with Final Fantasy.

The FFIV fangirl side of me just had a heart attack. I'll take ten please.

  • I for one am so glad I didn't buy the GBA port. The graphics look a lot nicer, and this is giving me hope of a one day FFVI DS remake. Which would be beautiful. From what I've heard FFIV was good so this is good news for me.

  • I just bought the GBA port a few months back. I like FFIV and all but I don't see why I should buy it AGAIN.

I really like how I made a comment yesterday about how Squeenix is a juggernaut that is constantly churning out subpar titles and remakes rather than new content, and ONE DAY later they prove my point for me. Thanks guys.

  • Final Fantasy is very quickly turning into the Star Wars of videogames. How many different version of each Star Wars episode have come out so far?

"Ooh! Now I get to buy a decades-old game as it was meant to be played!"
