Those new PlayStation Store cards sure would have come in handy at Christmas time. Would have been the perfect stocking stuffer for that special PlayStation 3 owner in your life. And we know, December 25 draws closer by the minute, but there was still a chance Sony could have slipped these into stores before Christmas, right? Nope. That would have been too obvious. Instead, they won't be hitting stores until early 2008.

sony really doesn't like to make money!
Oh Sony...
Knowing our luck, PAL or Australia would get them middle of next year...
Talk about missed opportunity.... Seriously this is not cool at all. I didn't want to have to fool with Visa giftcards, but oh well... Time to pay the piper for my DLC.
Sony REALLY thought this one out...how hard is it to make cards with credit inside?
Right about now, I have this much to say...
Bill Gates = Sony's Biggest Fan
Seriously, how the Sony Board of Directors keep allowing the ongoing fiascos to happen is just mindboggling to me.
As always... Excellent business planning as always and way to pick a launch date. Sony makes Goldie Locks look decisive.
Big deal. PS Cards aren't one of my gotta haves at this juncture. Yeah it would have been nice but o well.
and hows surprised by this exactly?
@mossberg: *who's
@Soldier_CLE:
Given that heir fans still buy the console and DEFEND those very mistakes, I cannot see why they would bother all that much.
What I want is demos for all arcade games. They are the only one of the 3 that does not allow SOME form of preview of every title.
I can understand companies trying to strategically time the release of products already finished to space out big releases - short controlled bursts and all that - but this isn't one of those times. Its a sooner the better kind of thing. And rather than it being the "option many of you have been asking for" they describe in the blog, it should be something we don't even have to ask for since it is a standard offering amongst competitors.
I dont know about you guys but physical cards are great because then you can inevitably score them for cheap. I got my points cards for the 360 for about 25 percent off.
@remanance: I agree. How hard is it for one of the world's largest electronics manufacturers to make a BS plastic card with a code for credit on it.
Just a heads up, I don't want anyone posting on the real logistics on how hard it is to make it happen.
They're just cards. Holy crap.
WTF? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. MY WARHAWK EXPANSION!!
@NitrousO:
The problem with the PS store is that there are no "points". Everything is in the native currency so I doubt that there would be any specials or "cheap" cards.
They probably need to change their system on how the cards are used. They may need to change over to points instead of cash.
@RSTStop780:
If you think it's simple to just create a system like that you are out of your mind. You not only have to set up the manufacturing the cards, you have to make sure the codes are fraud proof, you then have to make sure all your retailers are on board which takes time.
I never expected them to have this by Christmas time based on the time this was leaked to the world. That doesn't mean they shouldn't have had something like this from the start though. They're losing out more than we're losing out trust me.
@ssjmichael: For the love of God, did you not read the rest of my post...
@RSTStop780:
I did :)
You can't just proclaim it's a piece of cake, and then warn for others to explain to you it's not.
"The world is flat, don't want to hear otherwise LALALALALALA"
@ssjmichael: There is no cake.
The cake is a lie...
@RSTSTOP780:
Lol. I suppose he didn't.
@SSJMICHAEL:
So I suppose that a super giant king of electronics...and security...
couldn't quite find a way to make bullet-proof cards out of everything else they've made this year?
@RSTSTOP780: There, said it for you. :P
@remanance:
I never said they couldn't ever, I said it takes time. If we just heard about this recently, that's a good indicator that they're just setting something up. It takes weeks to ensure everything is tight. One simple slip up could result in millions lost. If we heard about this in the Summer time for instance then no doubt it would be here by the Holiday season. Like I said above, it's pretty bad that they didn't have this from the start, but I wasn't expecting this for Christmas based on when the news was leaked about it.
I mean it was just December 13th that news broke about this: [kotaku.com]
You think they could set it up perfectly by Christmas based on that? No formal announcement or anything? Think about it...
I think something like this would be complicated. Manufacturing for it would be diffrent in every region wouldn't it?
Guys,
A credit card system is really hard to work out, because you deal with electronic money you have to have permits as well as a reliable database, lots of security, and more. I know that the cards idea was only thought of in early novemeber for some reason, it doesnt surprise me that they didnt get it out.
Visa gift card FTW
@mishakoz:
exactly
@mishakoz:
you have to have permits as well as a reliable database,
Which Sony doesn't even have. I got a PS3 this weekend and have been trying to purchase things in the PSNetwork store since then with my regular old credit card and it doesn't work. I've contacted both my bank and Sony, and the anwer is that there's been something wrong with Sony's credit card database - for about four days now. I WANT to buy some games online, but Sony literally won't let me.
@Soldier_CLE:
This is a missed opportunity. I wouldn't say fiasco.
@multimoog:
That's really weird. I haven't had a problem yet.
I already have the money set aside in my wallet for the Warhawk expansion. Counting the hours.
Sony continues to be their own worst enemy. Third party developers are keeping their gaming ship afloat.
Not trying to be a fanboy here... I've loved my Playstation games since the PS1.
I think everyone is blowing this out of proportion. Yes, it's an inconvenience. Is it a catastrophe? No. Can you still buy things from the PS Store? Yes. Can you get Visa gift cards that will do the exact same thing? Yes, you can, at most department stores anymore.
Calm your asses down. If you go to Walmart (God forbid) and there are no PSN gift cards in the electronics section, instead of weeping and crying Sony's name into the heavens and damning them to Hades... Take a breath, smile, and walk ten yards to the Visa pre-paid credit cards sitting next to the cash register, knowing that the Warhawk Expansion and extra Motorstorm maps will soon be yours.
I guess I should also specify that this is for American audiences. European and Aussie folks may have some issue with above advice.
@PapaBear434: It's a catastrophe when it comes to the Warhawk expansion!
Is Sony obsessed with early 2008 or something? Early 2008 for the Dual Shock 3, PSN network cards, etc. etc., these guys need to stop putting crap off.
It's not a bad thing I don't care when it comes out, I just use my credit card anyways=]
