My PC can't run Portal. Yes, it's that old. Shut up. Besides, Orange Box doesn't come out here until October 25 anyways. Am I lost, then, awash in a sea of salty disappointment? No! Because for the next two weeks I've got this to keep me company. Sure, it may be lacking in graphical prowess, but it's the same basic principle.

bah, on level 32 and its anoying meeee!!! >.< RAWR!
awsome game tho
Wow, I never thought a "simple" flash game would be so much fun! It's even got all the "fling" mechanics!
After playing the real portal, I can say that this is not the same basic principal at all.
actual I hated that - I hope valve shut it down very quickly tbh. The people who produced it don't seem to understand fair use or any rights at all.
@Havok154: Enter portal, exit portal. Yes, it is.
@Dark:
Sure because I mean its exactly like the $20 three dimensional version....
So Luke, if you had a computer that could handle Portal would you be borked until October 25th if you downloaded via Steam? I know they ask for a lot of information but I assume you could just lie and say you live in the US.
Very cool...
But without the computer voice trying to help/kill me and the end credits bit, it definitely loses an important part of the translation.
I mean... where's my cake? I was resourceful and resolute in the face of an atmosphere of extreme pessimism... i want my cake! Or at least to be sung to during the end credits!
Yeah... cool... but you seriously need to play the real game.
Utterly Brilliant
I've been playing this for a little while and enjoying it. I'm on stage 28 without the help of a walkthrough... yet.
@bnpederson: It's possible to download from Steam now no matter where you live, I believe. My friend already has it, but I'm waiting for the retail copy.
Luke, The Orange Box (retail) is released here in Australia on the 18th, isn't it? In any case, I ordered it from eBay. Hopefully I'll get it next week.
Yeah, you can buy the Orange Box from anywhere if you use Steam. It might even be cheaper, depending on current exchange rates.
@dv8godd:
While this is full of spoilers, I do agree, the thing I loved the most in portal was the computer voice and the story, the puzzle part was fun, but when I completed the Advanced levels, it just didn't feel the same. Oh and the best credits in a video game ever are missing too. Portal's probably the coolest thing I played since Rez.
The Orange Box doesn't come out here [Australia] until the 25th Oct, are you sure? I went to EB the other day and the manager told me comes out the 18th Oct.
Don't worry luke. My computer's so old I can't even run bejeweled on it.
You can always pay Narbacular Drop (sp) the game that Portal's idea came from.
As stated by others, while the basic principle is the same, you are indeed are missing out on all the fantastic elements that makes Portal.
@bnpederson: Im more referencing the 360 release there
@William Sun: Pretty sure EB are wrong since every other retailer ive spoken to is saying 25th
cool! my copy of Orange Box wont even install! tested the DVD at work and it's fine. Just won't install on my gaming rig. Anyone else have installation troubles (WinXP)?
Just watch the work rate here drop. Level 24 and going.
This is the best flash game I've ever played. I'd pay for this.
Portal rocked hard and this was a pretty awesome mini version of the game mechanics. What's with the negative nancys.
Tomorrow is the last day at Circuit City for the OB to be $37.99 ($12 off U.S.). Just thought you might all want to know. [www.circuitcity.com] I mean it is better than the $5 off Steam was offering to pre-DL.
I think we all saw this coming.
It doesn't seem to capture the same feeling as the original game, although I'm certain it's for people who want to get a taste of what it's like.
@Havok154:
"actual I hated that - I hope valve shut it down very quickly tbh. The people who produced it don't seem to understand fair use or any rights at all."
Hell, it's a simple flash game and they don't make any money with it.
Don't be so picky.
Won't laugh at your old computer if you don't laugh at mine.
[pokes a ten year old laptop running Windows 98 with a tentative finger]
We aren't made of money here, especially not with all the games coming out this fall.
@Pyros: I was trying to be careful to only allude to "spoilers" by being somewhat cryptic... so you only know what I'm talking about once you've been through the game. So they'd only be spoilers if you knew enough to look at...
... everyone look away... nothing to see here. No spoilers... just people talking. :)
But yeah... computer + cake + end credits... brilliant. Having them missing from the Flash version is a bummer as they were the best parts.
@rainofwalrus: No issues here... and just to annoy you further, mine is installed on a MacBook Pro running XP. Go figure.
Hope you can get it worked out... it's seriously worth the trouble. Good luck.
this is really fun for the office, but Portal left me ZOMG last night after i beat it - i was like NO WAY after finding the room with the projector!
i hope it takes off so Valve can continue the story of Portal
@dv8godd: worse yet, while trouble shooting my rig: Quake:ET and Bioshock reinstall fine. Orange Box still wont install. Took it back and tried a second copy... no dice.
why are people so against this? It's just a quick flash game. I love it, my productive for the day at work has taken a massive hit. And I do have the original game and while it isn't as good as the real thing, it is still great in it's own right. I don't even think you can compare the two. One is a casual flash based game and the other is a casual 3d game that is a companion piece along with many other great games. You CAN like both people.
Now does anyone know if you can enter a passcode to skip back to the level you left off at?
Someone needs to get this working the Wii, mapping movement to the D Pad and such. I would play it ALL DAY.
@Hyperfludd:
Hook up a USB keyboard to your Wii and play it in the browser. No DPad though, but the controls suck anyway.
given that portal has been out only a couple days now...how did these guys nail the portal look? the sound of the portals, the camera watching you, the test chamber symbols, the start level....suspicious.
Portal was awesome btw...and the best ending ever.
Congrats to Daniel. Its really nice to see flash doing this things...
@trasparenza: This comment hits on my mind, maybe flash could be used as a cross platform (pc and all consoles) in order to develop games like this due consoles can browse and play flash games. It can be played anywhere. Flash Player 10 comes with a 3D engine... seems to be logical transition. :) What do you think guys?
Nice and these are the same people who made that flash zombie game "The Last Stand" keep up the good work!
It seems to me that such a little game encourages people to purchase the full version. Hell, after finishing the flash version, I really wanted to buy the Orange Box. So I suppose it does infringe on the intellectual properties, but seems to me Valve only benefits rather than losing out.
I'm enjoying this game, would be a great cell phone game don't you think?
I must suck though because I'm already stuck. Been trying to figure out the solution for level 09 for the last 20 min... anyone?
My boyfriend linked me to this the other night.. It's a lot of fun, and I got stuck around level 15 (and ended up calling it a night!). but I'll probably give it another try.
Uh yeah, as people are saying... play Narbacular Drop... at least you can shoot a portal through the other (which isn't in the actual Portal game, oddly enough).
@Torusan: i'm kinda glad you can't shoot a portal through a portal given that would make some of the bounds impossible...
Great Flash game, but only 40 lvls :-/
@kuzuboshii:
You are right! Narbacular Drop is still free and still available at:
[www.nuclearmonkeysoftware.com]
It will run on almost any PC made after 1998, and it's great!
Well that was fun. Delicious cake has been eaten!
@journeyman:
That's what it has done to me. Very cool concept.
THat flash game is great. Something simple while your waiting/killing time.
cool game. and it doesnt take much to run the orange box. Im using a geforce 4 card and i can run it...
Anybody else stuck on level 9?
I could use a hint.
Crimeny! How many levels are there???
If you haven't, you could always play Narbarcular drop, which was there game that was released when they were in Uni, and got them recognized by valve.
Its a good demo.
I'm on Level 32 and still going.
Now if only the retail version of Portal had this many levels. 19 is not enough to satiate us puzzle game fans.
finished the game today...might actually consider orange box now. Thanks unintentional marketing!
