Sony have a goal. They want to sell 11 million PlayStation 3s this fiscal year. Two weeks ago you would have looked at that number, looked at the PS3 and stifled a guffaw. Maybe even a chortle. Now, though? Price-cuts have people upbeat. Like Kaz! Kaz is upbeat. When asked whether he thinks Sony are now on-track to sell those 11 million consoles (no distinction made between shipped and sold to consumers, mind), he's all beans:
We're very well-poised to get to that number on a worldwide basis.Kaz: unflappable. Maybe even indefatigable.

Sold to retailers? Probably.
Sold to consumers? I'm not seeing that, unless MS doesn't drop their prices in which case, maybe.
I think they'll do better than they have been....but 11 million, that still seems a little chortle worthy.
I just don't see it as a price cut. People still have to pay $500 for the blasted thing.
Either way, by the end of the year Wii will be leading the console war, i just dont see MS holding on
Well so 11million by april next year
Yer thats possible Metal Gear Solid will shift a fair few,
then monster hunter, resi5 will shift loads in japan
Singstar will in europe
and then the xmas period will be good for sales. Not to mention another price cut between now and then
Im not saying they will do, however im not saying its impossible
11 mill? naw, never gonna happen.
difficult...
but not impossible
Good Luck Mr RIDDDDGE RACER!!
People must remember that this isn't till the end of this year, the fiscal year ends around april/march
Give Europe a price cut and not a bundle of junk I'll end up trading in for a crap value because everyone else is doing the same and we'll talk.
Considering the news today concerning MS and from a couple of days ago both Sony and Nintendo will have a shift in sales.
well assuming theyve sole around the 4mil mark now, the basic projection is that a $100 price cut in just the US will double sales compared to how they were in the 8 months prior (since release). Fair enough they have christmas but somehow I just dont think that'll happen...
I'm sure he means sold to retailers. I'm not seeing 11 million sold to consumers this fiscal year.
as a sony fan i'd love to see this happen, but i'll believe it when i see it
So far they shipped 6 mil and sold through 3.5 mil. In another words, they need to ship another 5 mil by next Mar. I am not sure how they can convince the retailer to take that many when there are 2.5 mil still sitting on shlves. But maybe they can. They never lied, right?
It's Kaz Hirai! KAAAAAZZZZZZ HIRAAAAAAIIIIIII!
*stone cold silence*
I will pick one up, thanks to E3.
Who do they think they are nintendo. Only way I can see it is if they give a couple free games with it. Even with the 100 bucks off its still to much. Hell in canada they just put it back to the regular price of 649.99. must say its a bit better then the 699.99 they jacked it up to 2 weeks after launch.
Maybe if that 2nd rumored price cut kicks in.
@Neon:
I thought the Wii wasnt "competing" with the other 2 powerhouses though?
Nintendo's words not mine!
My comment stopped showing up part way through E3... Have I been banned, or this just a bug?
11 million shipped to retailers its possible, very difficult but possible, sold to actual costumes its just a sweet dream...
What's the difference who they sell their consoles to? If consumers ain't buying them, retailers won't be either. Retailers aren't stupid and just keep buying PS3's for the hell of it. Selling 11 million to retailers means there's a demand for it and at least 8 million are being shifted. Yeah, I'm pulling numbers out of my ass but you get the gist of it.
Retailers wouldn't buy if they in turn weren't shifting their consoles to John Q. Public.
Heh, don't hold your breath Kaz. Actually, do... it might be fun to watch you turn blue and gasp for air. Maybe you'd finally lose that stupid Elvis sneer of yours, too.
JR
They have a chance to sell 11 million as long as they release a constant supply of games.
I am quite sure LAIR will sell quite a few PS3s.
heavenly Sword will sell a lot of PS3s.
Warhawk may be a big shocker and sell PS3s.
Ut3 will definitely sell PS3s with its superior support OVER the Xbox360 version. I wouldn't doubt PS3 may sell over 1 million for UT3 because millions of PC players may not want to spend hundreds on an upgraded PC when they get an Identical experience on the PS3. With KB/M and PC Mod support, there really isn;t anything distinguishing the PS3 and PC version besides having a beast PC that can play the game on a higher graphical level.
@firelogic: True, but if there's something like 3-4 million on retailers shelves at the end of the financial year then it's not exactly an impressive achievement is it.
Assuming that Sony are at 4 million sold right now (a fair assumption) then selling 7 million to retailers by April 2008 sounds like an achievable but lofty goal. It hinges on the PS3 being seen as an attractive investment to a wide majority of people.
The Xbox 360 hasn't sold 11 million yet and it's been out for about the same amount of time as Sony is allocating for the 11 million number. Of course, the Xbox 360 has Japanese sales numbers that would make anybody cringe, so there's a major market that's in-reach to Sony but out-of-reach to Microsoft.
They can do it, but it's going to be hard to convince enough people that the PS3 is worth it on potential alone. All of Sony's exclusive mainstream heavy-hitters (with the exception of Warhawk) aren't due out until 2008 at the earliest. That still tells me that Sony is banking on the potential of the PS3 this holiday season. An Xbox 360 price drop would be devastating to Sony's chances, especially if the price drop comes before GTA4 is out.
Time will tell, but it's an achievable goal.
I know several adult gamers who can easily afford a PS3 if they saw value in spending that much on a gaming console. They all think I'm nuts for spending $600. When they saw the price dropped to $500 it got nothing but a laugh from them. Until that thing hits $400 and has several exclusive titles, they're not going to move enough to make an impact.
11 million sold to retailers = possible.
11 million install user base in homes = impossible.
I do not see any way in hell, with near 4 million sold now, they will push that many by March of 08 or whatever. I would be absolutely shocked if it happened.
Not gonna happen. No games means no sales, guys. Sorry.
If you believe Wikipedia, they've shipped 5 million worldwide and sold about 3.5 million of that. It's feasible and I have no doubt they will pull it off.
But who cares if you have tons of units on the shelves? What matters to me is only the number of units sold to consumers. That dictates what software is being bought. Micrsoft has sold maybe around 10 million and shipped about 12 million last I heard from Gamasutra. And if you believe Wikipedia, the Wii has sold about 8 million.
So to sum up, good for them, they will ship that much, but unless the shipment sells out, who cares?
@VIETONE:
Remember, every time you release a big game (to the same audience), the list of potential *new console* customers shrinks. For example, let's say MGS4 gets released, and 2 million people (who didn't already have a PS3) were waiting for that game.
Now FF13 comes out. How many *new* PS3 customers are there? I'd wager a large amount of FF13 fans have already got a PS3 because they are early adopters, or MGS4 fans, etc.
This is a problem that both MS and Sony have. So far only Nintendo has figured out how to produce new customers out of thin air.
Anything is possible, I've seen odder things happen, still though thats a big push. In any case I wish them luck doing so.
sony are going to have to rely alot on the games that are going to come out between now and the end of the fiscal year.
if they can do this while constantly improving their online store and embedding home into the system there might be a decent chance.
11 million this fiscal year? So are we talking march to march?
Because if so of the 3.5million already sold a massive chunk would be taken away due to the launch numbers and sales up to march.
If the European launch is included in this fiscal year then I guess they would have sold maybe 1.5million or so this fiscal year so far.
If not then probably more like 700k.
Btw there is a pretty huge difference between sold to retailer and sold to consumers. This is a product that thrives on complimentary goods. The console itself is actually bad for profits. If they sell a ps3 to a retailer they have made a loss, if that Ps3 gets sold to a consumer who also buys multiple games with it then it is a profit. Im sure developer would much rather look at how many people can buy their game rather than how many consoles have been shipped.
@ Kuraudo:
What's so shitty about the Europe bundle? You get the two best games currently available for the system, and an extra controller. The total value of all of that far exceeds the $100 price drop we recieved in the states. Please don't quote European/UK prices directly converted into dollars, either; the dollar is exceedingly weak at the moment, and is made more so by direct comparrison with a strong pound or euro.
NEVER going to happen,Sony will be lucky if they sell 5 million in in a year even if they lowered the price an additional $100 in the next month.They are forgeting another reason the PS3 will not sell as well as the other 2 consoles is because ALOT of former PS2 owners already own 360's and Wii's and as far as they are concerned already have their new consoles.That and the fact that even with the games of E3 Sony lineup the few really good games don't ship until 2008 sometime.
@Calhoun: "I just don't see it as a price cut. People still have to pay $500 for the blasted thing."
maybe if we switch it around to another product. if bmw dropped the price of the M3, fully loaded, AC, sports suspension, bigger engine, ect, down to the price of the 328i (the cheapest, bog standard in the 3 series), would you see that as a price cut?
@Vietone:

Wow, keep dreaming, on every single point.
I work at an EB games, there is barely an interest in any of those titles at all. I think we've gotten 2 pre-orders on Lair, and maybe 3 on heavenly sword. 0 on warhawk. And none on UT 3. Motorstorm was more of a system sellar than any of them, we had alot of people actually genuinely interested in that title. And if you think a million people are going to buy a ps3 because they don't want to upgrade their pc, you're insane. Unreal is a fairly big name, but it's not THAT big.
Something tells me Microsoft has an ace up their sleeve that they haven't unveiled yet. I have a feeling that when they do, it's going to put a major dent in Sony's business, possibly Nintendo's as well.
@TRIPLEHELIX,
It would be more like dropping the price to a 335 really. But the bottom line is, most people are out there buying a Camry (PS2).
@Blinded220:
A PS3 here in the UK is $800, not only that but the EU gets crappy backwards computability and lame online content compared to the US and Japan.
Europe always gets screwed over and are expected to spend more than the rest of the world.
At least the 360 cares a more but that's not saying much either. RRODs are annoying.
@nya-chama:
compatibility*
I'm going to stick with believe it when I see it.
haha wth?
i want whatever hes smoking
as far as the computer gamers buying a ps3 so they dont have to upgrade their pcs for UT3, computer gamers usually HATE console controllers, nothing beats a keyboard and mouse, also they can also play CRYSIS
this will be even harder to achieve if MS does lower the price of the 360 (when Halo 3 launches would be a great time)
this shouldn't be too unlikely. i'm sure a lot of other people are in the same situation as me - i've wanted one since launch but there weren't enough games to justify getting one. by the end of this fiscal year, there'll be heavenly sword, uncharted, lair, folklore, ut3, haze, warhawk, littlebigplanet, home, mgs4 and possibly killzone 2. that's compared to today where you've got motorstorm, resistance, ninja gaiden and a couple of PSN games. people wont buy a games machine if there are no games to play on it, but once more are released you'd expect sales to go up.
@scottyboy218: Only idiots pre-order video games now. There is never a scarcity. Only dumb-asses pre-order at EB. Sorry no offense.
Is it possible that they ship that many by march next year? Yes it is. Will they? We'll just have to see won't we. They have a strong line up coming up this fall and Q1 2008 so the chance is very good.
11 million sold? Yeah right. Only if killzone 2 is the greatest game ever.
@Zanch:
Something tells me that you have no idea what you are talking about. If Microsoft had a trick up their sleeve, this week would have been the time to let it fly? Instead, what happened? Nothing. The only business I see Microsoft is denting is their own.
MS may not have lowered the price yet cuz well 1) its not the holiday season so the push for console buying isnt at its peak 2) most of the cool games for ps3 arent coming til the holiday season or after 3) they could do it when halo 3 launches to push sales of both even more
"Only idiots pre-order video games now. There is never a scarcity."
Oh how I wish I'd preordered Phoenix Wright...
@scottyboy218: You might want to actually bring out comparative stats to the X360 for your stats of PS3 pre-orders to make any sort of significance. And please don't make numbers up! I'm not insinuating that you are; just a call for general honesty.
Warhawk's lack of pre-orders is hardly suprising since it's available online. I mean, people don't actually need to buy the retail version since they must already have an online connection to even play the game... and thus they can purchase it through PSN.
I think the previous poster's general point is correct, although the sales boost by each title is really hard to call. The truth is, each and every one of these titles released on the PS3 will enlarge and richen its portfolio; deflecting previous accusations of a lack of titles and such. The consumer base will grow steadily, and it will surely because some gamers will buy it for this ga
