Haven't had a Ryoji Chubachi "what, what''s going on?" post in a few weeks. Time to rectify that. Speaking today at a forum for Japan's Keidanren business lobby, the Sony President was asked whether, in light of the recent PS3 price...changes in the US, Europe and Asia could expect a similar price cut/deal/clearance sale. Dude had no idea. As of right now, he said nothing was planned "at this point". As of later in the year, he said "about the future, no comment".
Remember the last time he said this? It wasn't too long ago. And three days later SCEA went and dropped the 60GB's price. Think somebody in the PlayStation division needs to knock on Chubachi's door, enter very humbly and apologetically, and suggest he keep his wordhole shut about PlayStation 3 price-cuts when speaking to the media.
Sony Says It Has No Plan to Cut PlayStation Prices Outside U.S. [Bloomberg]

price drop before the holidays, at least when the 60GB empty out. A bundle isnt the way to go, and they knows it.
Better to keep your mouth shut and not say something erroneous rather than assuming and giving an incorrect statement.
Man...it sucks to be PAL...
He was smart not to say anything.
There wont be a price cut. There WILL be a "price-cut".
japanese ps3 = 450 bucks
british ps3 = 900 bucks.
american ps3 = 500 bucks.
if you ask me, there's
something odd here.
Hogan's Heroes FTW
IN YO FACE, people who aren't me!
Considering how crappy the ps3 has been selling in Japan with the lowest price point since launch I doubt a price cut would do any good there.
A number of the smaller retailers aren't stocking any PS3 hardware, accessories or even getting the newest PS3 releases. They feel burned by how badly the PS3 is doing and a small town or small game shop abandoning a game company is a sure sign that a shitstorm is rolling in.
@Yetanotheruninspiredscreename:
People have been waiting for the fall of Sony since the PS2 released and threated to sink Sega.
I wouldn't hold your breath on the PS3 being sunk yet.
threated = threatened
DOH!
I'm confused. What part of the business is this in charge of?
PhotoChopShop FTW!
PaPabear lol,
Sony sinked Sega? I think Sega sunked themselfs on the genesis era, how many products did they come to try make Genesis do better graphics? or try compete with the gameboy with gamegear? and still didnt push the console to compete with nintendo who was the main winner, until Sony came with the ravaging of FF7 in october in 1997.
please do your history research before claiming Sony is like M$ that loves to buy/bribe out companies (cough R*, RARE, Epic, Softimage-XSI cough).
I'd guess that he's not commenting on other 'clearance sales' because the other territories are likely already being shipped the PS3 without the EE inside.
As for the british PS3 being so expensive, I'd guess they're announcing a price drop for the holidays. Not the best idea, but an idea nonetheless.
@Crunshii:
Funny you mention SEGA... no fanboys/trolls talking up how Peter Moore jumped off the SEGA ship before it sunk? Hey, he just jumped of Microsoft's ship!
I don't think they'll sink either.
@Crunshii: Yes, cuz MS is the only one who has bought out studios. *rollseyes*
And Sega did sink themselves, but Sega fans lik eto make Sony the enemy.
@mentalboy11: It's only $862 now in UK because of current exchange rate. Still way to expensive. When you consider the $600 price with tax would only come to £312 when it actually costs £425.
@mentalboy11: Yeah, it's called exchange rates.
@Ketsuban:
Huh? No it's not.
The figures above are based on the current exchange rates (converting the figures back to US dollars).
For whatever reason, consoles are comparatively more expensive in some regions than others (once the prices are compared based upon current exchange rates).
@Crunshii:
Yeah, see, I know Sega sank themselves. But according to crazy assholes out there, Sony was the sole and only reason Sega died.
I know my history, but I was stating the fact that ever since Sega died people have laid the blame on Sony and have prayed so dearly for Santa to please destroy the mean men who brought down the house of Sonic.
Before we get into a Dreamcast v PS2 debate, please remember the Dreamcast was one of the most successful consoles for Sega and did well against the PS2 originally. However as has been pointed out the Genisis sunk them in the end. Big third-party developers like EA did not support the dreamcast and then the Dreamcast could easily play pirated games with a boot (then self boot) discs as the GD-Roms were effectivly slightly bigger CD-Roms which had been cracked years ago.
Segas debts from the Genisis is one of the main reasons they were sold in 2002/2003 to Sammy Holdings. They never re-couped them with the Dreamcast, however successful it was. Then people moved on on the PS2.
well, im glad they decided not to annoy us.
Won't be long before the U.S. PS3 is back to it's $599.99 price.As soon as the 60gigs clear out and the fire sale is over, the big hoax will be over and noone will be confused anymore.
Well in the UK at the moment they got a bundle deal going on, PS3, extra sixaxis, 2 games out of a choice of 5 (Motorstorm and RFoM probably), and an HDMI cable to boot, and this is from Amazon. I guess if you sell all the extra crap you don't need or didn't want till you're left with the PS3 only it could end up costing you maybe £325 or around $650 or so. It's a nice ruse by Sony to make it seem like great value, especially as they could take it on the chin on the extras by not making any profit on them only bundling them in at cost, and still keep the relative price of the PS3 close to the £400 or so that the retailers had discounted it to before the bundle came in.
@Yetanotheruninspiredscreename:

Yes, the Japan PS3 ($450) is only costing half of the Europe PS3 ($900), yet the Japan PS3 sales are still the worst world-wide. I also seriously doubt that a price cut would achieve anything there.
Let's be clear. The main difference between the "60 GB" US version and the 80GB new version is primarily the motherboard and other hardware. As an engineer who has been involved in many production electronic products, I can tell you that there has likely been a flood of ECNs (Engineering Change Notices) since Sony released the console at launch, and as soon as Sony needs a new run of motherboards these changes will be incorporated. The ECN's can address anything from improving reliability to enhancing performance to solving a problem to helping cost-reduce the system. Sony desn't want to have to deal with several versions of the hardware out there, so they are anxious to get the older hardware off the market. So, yes, in one sense, since the "price cut" is applicable only to those older products, it is, in fact, a liquidation sale of a discontinued product.
@PapaBear434: @Kevyn: @Tezs:
Papabear, so basicly if nintendo would have won the 2000 era against Sony then Sega would have hated to death nintendo? well guess that makes sense. Even dough Sega was going to go bankrupt with whoever won either way.
Sega's main competitor was nintendo for about 15 years, Sony was just the newcomer that Nintendo had to much pride to work when they were making the secret project Nintendo-Station.
Sony and Nintendo were actually about to merge to create the new system, but nintendo were so up the ass (I guess like Sony is now if you may) That Sony said, "f?ck you, we will start on our own console and introduce to the world, CD ROM GAMING!" Nintendo laughed at them saying GL suckers, gamers love our cartridges and your CD ROM crap is going to phail"
Well look what happened. thats why I appreciate what Sony is always doing, moving on, pushing technology at a risk. PS1 = CD ROM gaming, PS2 = DVD Gaming, PS3 = new Cell + BRD Gaming + allot of HD shit.
thats the technology pusher, nintendo is the Casual Gamer pusher, and M$ is the FPS/Sports kind. But nintendo and Xbox have proven to not push technology, so if Sony doesnt do it who will? How long does nintendo still stick to cartridges? when CD and DVD were out? Yea all these bloggers complain about Sony fails so much with UMD, MiniDisc, ect ect. Then how the f?ck are we going to produce better technology if no one takes the risks? most people are just flaiming idiots who dont appreciate the art.

Left hand, meet Right. Right, meet Left. "It's good to play together."
Oh wait, that's somebody else's line.
@MajoShinpan: i hear the euro and japanese markets are quite different, but dont tell the fanboys.
@Latonone: haha, nice.
Kotaku. Next time please please please can someone just ask him sraight up does he actually want to sell PS3 in europe? Or is he trying to subtly price himself out of the market?
Seriously someone ask him because apart from dedicated fanboys (and believe me they have to be the dedicated ones not the part time trolls), no-one is buying in europe. Why? Simply the price.
