The doorbell just rang, and it was a tip. From a LEGO AMBASSADOR. From LEGOLAND. I felt honoured just to be in his presence. Anyway, he was popping round to drop off a couple of bits of concept art for NetDevil's upcoming Lego MMO, Lego Universe, as well as a few morsels of info on the game/life-consumer. Info below, art in the gallery at the bottom.
- Seems the gameplay elements, Lego-building and social networking will all be taking place on the same screen.
- The game's being developed in very, very close consultation with Lego fans, who test out every aspect of the game as NetDevil are implementing it.
- They're hoping to have the game rolled out by mid-2008.
- There's one more point of info, but the translation's a tad confusing, so i'll just post it raw: "Ultimately the LEGO Group want to offer the unique experience to play with the LEGO brick both virtually and physically together with your friends from all over the world, and you can even change from the physically to the virtual play as you like - "You are in control"."
-
No idea what that last one means. But it certainly sounds exciting.
News: Details Released for "LEGO Universe" MMOG [Brothers Brick, Thanks Andrew, Ambassador of Legoland!]

OMFG!!! LEGOS!
that's an interesting idea for an mmo
that concept art looks suspiciously like it was done by the EBoy boys. that would be cool.
O.M.G. AWESOME!!!!!!!
Good God, based on the sick desire of many to corrupt small children even further (or at least f*** with 'em mercilessly), the griefing in this game is going to unprecedented. I'm sure Shawn Elliott is already drawing up hours and hours of self-generated fun for this one. (I like the guy's humor immensely, but I guess I'm a "Care Bear" when it comes to the concept, as most people don't have his level of wit to make the antagonism tolerable.)
Im wary of this, it could be...interesting, for lack of a better way of describing it, but that concept art has me scared. The buildings dont look like they were built using legos, the look like legit buildings. Im not saying they need to look bad to look like they were made of legos, but being able to see the actual piececs would be nice.
Please don't be Second Life.
I'm actually anticipating some more info on this! :)
My guess: they'll link it with the custom lego set ordering they already have. Build cool stuff OL. Click buy. Blocks arrive in mail. Build at home.
@Shardavarius:
I'm kinda seeing the opposite: Buy bricks, use code to get special bricks in-game, have someone smash your creations to bits :(
Don't even think about ninja looting my LEGO lightsaber. Tis mine!
So, when the lego MMO comes out it'll be the end of the world? I thought that would be in 2012.
Maybe they'll let you print out instructions of your own creations?

Why, it is simple. They will have magical legos ship with the game, and whenever one of your friends moves the identical set he owns, the piece shall float and follow his movements.
It seems to be poorly translated PR bullshit.
I think that last part just means you'll be able to switch between building stuff with yourself and just playing with legos (physical) and actually interacting with others and doing tasks and building stuff together possibly (virtual).
In any case, I'm very excited for this game. So long as there's a place where you can build, and maybe a place where you can set up your own home with property you obtain, and a mode to build with others, that'll be great.
Gonna have to watch out for all that blocky genitalia that's sure to pop up though.
This game seems really cool.
@SuperNuttendo: We can only hope man. We can only hope.
If i cannot ride out into the countryside to construct my own castle from which to wage terrible medeival war on the neighboring domains, i'm not interrested.
I've never understood peoples urge to play games based on legos. Perhaps if it involved building things out of legos that would be one thing, but lego star wars and now a lego mmo. This to me seems ludicrous. As a child I even thought lego people looked jank. Its ironic that in a genre of hyper realism that a series based on blocky stacks is even popular enough to garner development funds. Eh, I suppose I'll never get it.
Now this is the stuff of childhood dreams. Not so much cybering a furry and buying eClothes.
Lego wins.
Hmm...interesting concept...
Any word on whether or not this will be on a console?
I'm guessing no, but you never know.
MMO Microserfs.
Sign me up! I'm a big LEGO fan and I can't imagine anything cooler.
I hope someone makes a mod like the nuke in second life, but with a giant hand instead that knocks away other peoples crap... Now THAT would be funny
@The-Spectre: You are not eligible to enter the Kool room. lol
Oh my god. I just imagined building a massive e-lego tower.
I am so buying this when it comes out. I don't even care if I get made fun of at college... this is gonna be wicked.
I'm sure there will be actual game mechanics, like.. you have to purchase land, and purchase blocks.. but it's just so gonna be worth it.
Lego seem to be pretty cool with their fans - once Lego found out that robotics researchers were using their Mindstorms kits and hacking them so they'd respond to a C-like language and coming up with all sorts of new sensors, they tapped them to help design the revised set.
Yes, actual robotics researchers build stuff in Lego. Why not? It's less than $200 and the only thing you have to add is a freely available low-level programming language - much cheaper than prototyping from scratch.
