The Japanese Wii launch figures are in, courtesy of Famitsu. And are perplexing.
370k consoles were sold, which is short of the initial guesstimates of 400k or so. Twilight Princess didn't achieve anywhere near the attach rate it managed in the US, shifting "only" 145k units, which is less than half the number of consoles sold. It wasn't even the highest-selling game. Actually, it wasn't even the second-highest-selling game.
The first and second spot went to the individually-sold Wii Sports (176k) and not-for-Americans Wii Play, with 174k. Dare we speculate that Nintendo's marketing strategy for the console might actually be working, at least for now? Two party games just outsold a new Zelda title.
The top 5 selling games were:
Wii Sports - 176880
Wii Play - 171888
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - 145068
WarioWare: Smooth Moves - 63086
Super Swing Golf - 12673
The rest of the launch lineup can be found after the jump. Wing Island fans wondering how it fared might not want to know. Poor Wing Island. You never stood a chance.
