Nintendo have been big on the message that they're no longer in competition with Sony and Microsoft. That they've moved on. We've been hearing it non-stop for the past 2-3 years, and frankly it's getting a little boring. The only way we're going to keep listening is if they start making the statements more entertaining. Enter George Harrison!
We're happy to stay out of that. Microsoft is going to get their Halo fans. Sony is going to get their Ridge Racer fans. We just feel that there's a whole audience that no one is talking to.Ridge Racer? What is this George, 2001? Surely the PS3 has more games than...oh, I get it.

Preach it, George.
looks @ article *yawn* *goes back to enjoying Resistance, Oblivion, NGS, and motostorm.*
Poor Kaz. He will never live that down.
@mphz:
Well not until they Sony stops using it at press events.
Hey- they spoke for one of us at a literal level actually. I'm a big Ridge Racer fan. And I've got a PS3. lol.
I can only hope Kaz helped Namco along with getting us a new Ridge Racer sometime soon.

RIIIIIIIIDDDDDGEEEEEE RRRRRRRRRRAACCCCCERRRRRRRRRRR
?
They have done it! Nintendo has transcended.
Because the sony consoles have always hindered on the succses of Ridge racer. :p
George? I thought you retired, and HOLY CRAP! A NEW PICTURE OF GEORGE HARRISON?! WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?!
Such a burn.
I don't care what anyone says - even if it's Nintendo - they are still in competition with the Xbox and PS3. Sure, maybe not DIRECTLY, but if better sales of the Wii mean less consoles sold and games made for the other two systems (or vice versa), then that shows they're part of the race.
I can see that George likes to visit the Internets.
Then again, he could've been in the audience at Sony's conference last year, too.
George, please make Nintendo buy Sega before you leave. kthxbi
@phinehas:
It competes for shelf space in EB and GameStop as well.
*yawn* i thought this clown retired?
sure, let's all quote kaz from like years ago, i guess repeating this arrogant rhetoric wont be in fashion until next-next gen when its someone else's turn on top.
man, i wish there were more games all around, and less talk.
Well he is right, the target audience of M$OFT and $ONY is very different than the one of Nintendo...
Yes there's a whole audience that people aren't talking to, but that doesn't mean you should talk to me too.
Talk to me, Nintendo. :(
@phinehas: Of course they are still competing, even if they aren't trying to- that's what makes it even worse.
It's like trying to win a drag race with a razor scooter- the cars aren't even trying and they're leaving you in the dust.
An exaggerated comparison, but a valid one.

Harrison Ford
George Harrison
Coincidence?
God, I've been saying that for what feels like forever. People keep complaining that there are no real games for the Wii, and that it only has non-games. But what these decriers don't realise is that they are not Nintendo's targeted demographic. Nintendo is targeting the under exploited market that is casual or non games, and they are making an absolute fuck ton of money from it. If some hardcore gamer buys a Wii, great, Nintendo makes some pocket change. If that gamer complains that there are no real games, they don't give a shit, they have his money, they can add him to the statistic, but they are not interested in what he wants, there is no money in his market for Nintendo.
I heard the problem with the Wii is that Wii owners are not buying enough games. How many Wii titles have broken the one million sales mark??
@TOCATL: Indeed it is. People who actually buy software.
Is he talking about the audience with arthritis?
@TheIrishNinja: Dude you're a week away from one of the most hellish release schedules in living memory. Be patient :)
It's Ridge Racer! Riiiiiiiiiiidge Racer!
...
That is all.
So we Sony fans have got Ridge Racer, 599 US Dollars, and Massive Damage. What does Microsoft have?
"Halo Edition Xbox 360!" *Silence*
And Nintendo?
"Our wonderful new name! The Wii!"
Yeah, it's not just us. Everybody has their retarded quotes. ...Ours are just funnier.
@98abaile2: I disagree. Though they are much, much, much more casual than they were in the past, I feel that Nintendo is catering quite nicely to the "core" market. There are actually only a few first party casual games coming out in the near future, with the remainder of the near future being filled with nice, juicy "core" titles.
Sure many would point to Wii Fit as the reason Nintendo has abandoned the core market, but what else (that's not already out)? Nintendo's got the "big three" coming soon, along with Battallion Wars and a couple of other core games.
When you look at casual games on the Wii, you mostly see third party titles- which further perpetuates my recurring argument: It's the third parties that are ruining the Wii- not Nintendo.
@Plunkett: Aside from Metroid Prime 3 and Bioshock, what else is there? >_>
First of all, I don't know why the Ridge Racer meme hasn't died along with massive damage. It's pretty obvious that the joke has no power anymore aside from petty fan boy squabbles emulating old news due to the fact that Sony, including Kaz, is actually running with the joke now a'days.
Secondly, like it or not Nintendo is still grouped in with Sony and Microsoft. They're all in the same business. It's like a film noir popping up in the middle of pop corn flick season. They can say they're going for a different audience but it's still movies and it'll still be played in the same places to the same mass market.
Now I'm not comparing Nintendo to Film Noir. Oh god no. However, the example still holds up.
Lastly, this George Harrison doesn't go out of his way to visit the dung heap that is the intrawebs very often does he?
@TheIrishNinja:
Dude, Kaz shouted that out only last year, not years ago. :P
@mphz: I think he means starting next week we'll be seeing a plethora of games literally crashing down like a divine wind sweeping up the beaches in an attempt to ease our Core Gamer hearts.
@Black-Dog-Howls: I wish the "serect" meme hadn't died so easily- I found it funnier than "riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge racer" and "massive damage"
@mphz:
Stranglehold, Jeanne D'Arc, Lair, Blue Dragon, Guild Wars: Eye of the North, and Wild Arms 5, all excellent games, will be out by the end of the month. Okay, Wild Arms 5 is a stretch, but I'm looking forward to it.
@Dangeresque:
You don't have RRoD jokes. You automatically win in the joke category just for that. Ridge Racer, giant enemy crabs, and real-time weapon change are just icing on the cake.
@Dangeresque: Not just funnier, but more numerous. Let's face it: the Sony PR people are on acid.
@Black-Dog-Howls: I'll buy that. :)
@Dangeresque: Touche. :3
@pupaboy: Wii Play (which only sells because of the Wii Remote), Rayman Raving Rabbids, Red Steel, Super Paper Mario, I think Pokemon Battle Revolution by now... Yeah...
I guess Nintendo doesn't believe in those Giant Enemy Crabs :(
"We just feel that there's a whole audience that no one is talking to."
Yeah of old geezers and soccer mom's.
Why the hell does Nintendo insist on saying this garbage? Wii does differentiate, but it's obvious who their closest competitors are, and just because they want to live in some PR/marketing spin world doesn't mean that everybody else isn't going to make the obvious comparisons. This "we're not competing" line is just the corporate equivalent of plugging your ears and yelling "LA LA LA" every time someone mentions M$ or Sony.
@MetaKz: Or they fear the giant enemy crabs in factual feudal Japan!
@RonJeremy4Pres: Or everytime someone mentions the fact that no Wii game will ever reach the sheer numbers of Halo, GTA, or even fucking Killzone.
@RawSteelUT: You forgot Zelda, which I think is pretty high on the list... like #2.
There are actually more- IGN had a list.
@mphz: Yeah, I'll give you that. I may be a fanboy, but I like to think of myself as a reasonable one. We're kinda crazy. Remember our PSP White ads? Ouch.
@SuperMaxZero: I'm not sure we can make RRoD jokes. We can just hold a 360 owner's hand in comfort while he cries.
@Dangeresque: And the PSP squirrel! I forgot all about that! I hated him so much!
According to the current sales, Microsoft & Sony are fighting for a distant 2nd place right now. So in a way, it is "their" fight.
@Dangeresque: I prefer forgetting the "urban squirrel" commercials... Those were annoying, stereotype laden and plain ol' stupid.
you can boil nintendo's core audience down to mario. and microsoft to halo.
but sony has always appealed to a large audience with a wide variety of games.
nintendo is just the first one to try and appeal to your mom.
Way to dumb down two of the best gaming consoles with a simple blanket statement about the type of games you can play.
MS has had a slew of "only on xbox" titles that I can easily identify with. Off the top of my head I can think of more than ten Xbox only games that were console sellers. To include GTA:SA which prior to the latest iteration was a PS2 seller.
Sony on the other hand seems to be quickly infiltrating into Nintendo territory with simple family friendly games. What I am assuming started with Katamari, and Loco Roco seems to be turning into a big deal for Sony as they try to sell the new PS3 as a "hi-fi family entertainment system".
The whole while Nintendo is courting more FPS/Action Adventure games.
My point being, you just can't make a blanket statement like "Sony = race, MS = shoot, Nintendo = different" and not expect people who have been following the console scene to do a double take. There are just too many cross platform games, and too much competition from rival game companies to be so simple.
I'll end this by saying that Nintendo has a legacy of cool concepts, and that I love them to death. Wii just didn't have the games I wanted to play
@Gamemaster: You've probably already seen it, but I can't resist... [www.vgcats.com]
@Plunkett: really? i gotta check then, what exactly's due soon? that other guy says metroid and bioshock, what else is on deck that im forgetting here?
@BPMΩ: my bad, i cant keep up with bad PR and its exact time, i just kinda lump it all together.
@Trowble: Let's not forget that the "audience with arthritis" is also the largest--- the Baby Boomer generation.
@pfive81: "Didn't?" Past tense before the good games come out?
I need your awesome foresight to settle some bets about the 2008 election... I'm gonna clean up
