Yes, that's right. Another Gundam game. [Cue "the last 78 were shit" jokes]. Done? Right, let's move on. It was announced in the latest Famitsu, and will be an FPS affair, the Wii Remote being used to aim and to launch melee attacks. Seems you can also exchange weapons with the dead you leave in your wake.
It's due soon. Very soon, in fact, as it's slated for July 26 in Japan. The US release date? Unknown. European? Hahahahaha. Heheh. Heh. No idea. I don't really like Gundam, but I'm down with giant robot FPS games. Least, I was down with Shogo.

Good to see someone else still appreciates Shogo. Even now, I occasionally go back to play it a bit, and it is still fun. I would have loved to see a sequel.
I know we can make it togeeetheeeeeeer!
Wow, now I'm pumped up. Someone make a sequel, official or otherwise!
Hmm lets see how the aiming figures out. Multiplayer? Bubble shields!? YEY
I wouldn't say every gundam game has been shit at all. There have been some genuinely good titles from the franchise. Not many, of course, but some.
As long as I can play as a GM Ill be happy.
They really need to add a cow mech you can milk for money. Mobile Gundam Cow Milker Seed Musou Z Plus edition sounds pretty enticing, doesn't it? I mean, obviously there's people out there who'd buy it.
FPS Gundam? i have a feeling the japanese will magically overcome their giddyness just because it's gundam....
another fighting robot suit game? jeesh... the last 78 were shit.
@darkowl: Mobile Gundam Cow Milker Seed Musou Z Plus edition FTW!
xD
The last 78 were shit.
@hooters: Sure is easy to say that if you dumbasses havent even played all of the gundam games.
If you have, hows about showing us by naming every single one of them out there for starters?
The next 78 will be shit, too.
At this point it would be stupid not to make Gundam game for the Wii. In Japan IT PRINTS MONEY! :P
Gundam games are always crap, mediocre crap at best, but a first person shooter Gundam game? Oh god...
@hooters:
i think thats the actual series name, and not the number of gundam games made
Gundam Wing for SNES is one of the best titles for that system.
@Atheist Jew:
Indeed - some of the games have been downright solid.
The 'Vs' series have always been enjoyable, though do require more knowledge than a browsing of Wiki will provide. Encounters in Space was also a wonderful presentation of the Gundam franchise.
Shame the rest of the Gundam games in the US have ranged from mediocre to just plain crap.
And other anime games being complete crap don't actually help, either.
@meltyman: Thats the year it takes place. 0079 is the year of the "One Year War" the war the original 1970's Mobile Suit Gundam takes place in (IE Amaro, Char, the White Base, etc)
As for games, there have been a number that are generally good. Zeonic Front was awesome IMHO, and Encounters in Space and its younger brother where both really cool retellings of the original 0079 saga in a similar vein as Robotech was (also a really cool game)
But then you got the hideous load of fighting sims brought on thanks to G Gundam Gundam Seed and Gundam Wing and its load of stupidly designed and completely fiction based mechanics (the original Gundam while being a bit far fetched did work hard to bring a air of reality to the show. The suits where damaged and destroyed a lot, people died regularly, and they strove to base as much as they could on physics ie the difference between the original Star Trek and movies vs its later series like seasons 5-7 TNG and VOY)
If they would just make a legitimate Mechwarrior type Gundam game based in the original universe I would be happy.
Fuck yes. The wii is actually well suited to a gundam game, especially if they do air or space combat.
An FPS? Cool idea...wouldn't have been my guess for where the next Gundam game would go, but hey, I'm excited.
You make it play as solid as Renpou v Jion, and I'm totally sold.
Was this one announced awhile back in Japan or something? Or do they have a 'Gundam Production Machine' that they just press a few buttons on and spit out Gundam merch?
Not knocking the game, as it still has to be played to really prove if it's good or not, but as this is news, a game just being announced... and already close to it's release?
Anyone other than me get down on Gundam 0079 Side Story on the Dreamcast? For those who are uninitiated it was also an FPS, and a squad based one at that. You and 2 other mechs were deployed in Australia, and did missions and what not. It was very much so the "realistic" gundam game I'd always hoped for. Unlike in.... well in nearly every other game before and since I felt worried when a new mobile suit was deployed against me, and it really cemented the Gouf as my favorite Zeon mech, despite it being only an enemy.
If this ends up even a little like Side Story I will be pleased beyond imagination.
Well... even a little like Side Story and, you know, with controls that don't blow absolute chunks.
w00t?
I think this would be the first game on the Wii to feature a "light saber" that you can control :)
Shogo? Now there's a word I haven't heard in years.
Mad props for the obscure 2nd gen FPS throwback.
*proceeds to playing counterstrike online*
oh and finally, a real gundam game for the wii. I dreamt about the controls once. I hope it doesn't disappoint.
HELL YES. As someone who owns the decent Gundam titles that make it over to the US, I can only pray this one comes over too. By decent, of course, I mean the VS. Series (still plan to import Alliance vs. Zaft for PS2). I can only hope that the control scheme works.
And if it doesn't? It will bring home the fact that Bandai should get off their Universal Century cruise and make a Gundam Wing GAME! (at least to me!) It wasn't as popular in Japan as it was here, but they could at least TRY if they insist on making more Gundam games. Shit, Gundam Musou should have BEEN a Gundam Wing game, God knows how many cannon fodder mecha got annihilated in that show.
I'm still waiting for Bandai to make my dreams come true; a Ghost in the Shell game for PS3, so I'd have a reason beyond FF XIII or the _possibility_ of ZOE 3 to spend over 600 clams.
Is this like the VR Gundam!? Watch the videos

I a fan of 0079 Gundam so I might check this one out. If the visuals are like what's seen in Famitsu so far then it don't look half bad admittingly. I sure hope they make good use of the Wii controller for this FPS most of all. Maybe Gundam games are are getting better or was Gundam Musou an exception.
so I take it no one ever seen the 0079 side story gundam games for the saturn? Those were FPS and were decent
NOW, I need a Wii! :)
@ShimodaNexus: Gundam Wing was plenty popular in Japan. It was the first alternate universe series to get its own OVA, and let's not forget how many manga have been released for it compared to G, X, and Turn A. Plus the continual presence and prevelence of Wing models cements it's popularity. It was pretty popular in Japan because of its crossover appeal, what with the five bishounen pilots and all. Heck, the dudes have a pretty spectacular introduction in ACE 2 when you get to them (although, at the moment, I've only been introduced to Heavyarms, Deathscythe, and Sandrock -- still more of the game to play). So, in short, Wing is popular in Japan. Not as popular as the UC or SEED, of course, but that's just because it's not as good. In America, well, it did have the good fortune of being the first Gundam released on TV.
As for this game, I'm looking forward to it. I don't know why Gundam games take the heat that they do. I was playing Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam the other day, and I remember just how fun the game was. Very simple arcade controls and tons of different units to learn and master. Zaft vs. Alliance II Plus has taken that formula and run with it, making it more intense and ADD friendly. They're just fun games. The Battle Assault games are crap, Yes, but there are some golden nuggets out there if you stop turning a blind eye just because it's called Gundam.
That sounds too defensive. Well, what the hell, it's true! Some gamers are just narrowminded.
