Early Bird Gets Earthworm Jim PSP

I put this to you. Which is sadder? The fact that Earthworm Jim on PSP has been shelved, or the fact it was probably the only game on PSP I was looking forward to? Answers to the comments section.

PSP Fanboy got the bad news from Atari, where a spokesperson told them:

I believe EWJ is off the roster. May be revisited in the future, but the title is, as I hear it, on hold.

A shiny remake of one of the greatest platformers of all time, stretched to widescreen and made portable was a good move. Not a bad one. No wonder Atari is always losing money!

  • Bah this would have been great. Agreed Plunkett, Atari is petarded for not getting to work on this.

  • Dude, they scrapped it in favor of making it for a Wii version. They wanted to avoid the, 'oh god another PSP port!?' that would follow if they made this game.

  • "...one of the greatest platformers of all time..."

    Agreed.

  • Maybe it got canned for a DS version instead?

  • Man, the first thing I hear about this game is that it's being cancelled :( Would have been a must buy game for me, for sure. I'm REALLY trying to like my PSP, but I barely even remembered I had one for almost an entire year. Oh well, I guess once I'm done with Puzzle Quest, it's gonna go back to the closet for another 6 months.

It does suck for PSP owners. Earthworm Jim is the only game in all my decades of gaming where I was inspired enough to commission a personal piece of artwork that I had framed, signed and numbered (1 of 1).

Is it true that it's been canceled for a Wii release, as Black-Dog-Howls has claimed in a post a few above mine? I could live with that, if it were still widescreen and still one of the most awesome games ever. If it's a VC game, I have absolutely no hope of anything but a straight port, though.

I do remember a really shitty port of the game being released for some console. I'm thinking it was the GameBoy Advance. So the title can be left raped and screaming as a port, so maybe we should let sleeping classics lie.

  • As long as a new Earthworm Jim ends up coming out on ANY system ill be happy. They just need to pick up the pace and make the damn thing, its overdue.

  • To be honest. I'm a little bit happy that this remake has been cancelled. EarthWorm Jim 1 and 2 worked because of the awesome sprites. It looked like an excellent cartoon full of personality. I wasn't too impressed with the 3d graphics, they just seemed...bland and a bit too forced.

I'd love to see a new Earthworm jim...in full 2d glory.

  • Earthworm Jim is one of the greatest video game characters of all time.

    'Nuff said.

I think the reason the game was cancelled/on indefinite hold is because Atari no longer owns Shiny Entertainment (the original developer of the 2D games, and the PSP game). They were acquired by Foundation 9.

  • It's a shame they canceled this really. I mean we've even seen gameplay footage of it and what they showed was awesome.

Makes you think if they had an idea to just port it on the Wii and make more money...

I guess I just have to emulate it on the PSP then...

  • this does indeed suck, sorry to hear it.
that said, with MGS PO 2, that Castlevania one, Silent Hill: Origins and such coming, you were really only excited about this one? Really?

  • i totally agree with what Zho said,i´m happy this version was cancelled, too.
Earthworm Jim 2D games where mostly known for their fantastic art direction/character design and animation, the 3d port seems way bland in comparison.
The textures feel so blurry and washed out that even in a hd video version its hard to see the character´s face or other details.
They really should either redo the 2d games in hd,do a new 2d game or wait with a 3d version till they have an advanced enough engine to do 3d comic art which doesn´t look ridiculous in comparison to the 2d animations. Another issue is that even with a propper engine/hardware to handle it (see team fortress 2 type comic 3d), earthworm jim´s art style just doesn´t fit that great together with modelling the characters as 3d meshes (hence for example earthworm jim´s body did all sorts of funky transformations during the anims which look fine in 2d but kinda weird when applied to a 3d model, the only bit where i saw they tried it in the trailer vids was that the whole jim model was just stretched when he flew in air and that looked kinda cheap then).

  • Major bummer - Earthworm Jim was an awesome game and one I would've been glad to revisit on my PSP. Alas, it wasn't meant to be.

  • You know how in college you go back and revisit all the TV shows you thought were awesome when you were a kid, and then most of those shows turn out to be not so awesome, and you wonder what the hell kind of drug-like effects youth really has on your mind?

I think Earthworm Jim was kind of like that. Even the TV show -- which at the time, was considered a rival to The Tick, The Tick I say! -- but now it just seems so juvenile.

And when I played through some of Enter the Matrix recently, some of its cheap, annoying challenges gave me flashbacks to the gameplay of Earthworm Jim. Sure, it was a lot more creative than other platformers, but I really feel it was different just for the sake of being different.

And I'm not just posting this for the sake of being different, either. :-p

  • Never liked old Jim, I think I found the controls "off" at the time. Too bad though, would have been popular.

  • Who gave this jewel to Atari?

    God damn hippies!

  • They are probably going to release it on the PSN as a classic title which would be more cost effective. I think at some point, they'll start pushing these games through digital distribution because it can't possibly take that much effort to port it to a console once you have the conversion process down.

  • I hope someone from Atari is reading all these comments.

And knows just how upset the psp community is because this would of been so awesome.

And now I'm not going to buy anything from their brand until it comes out for PSP

Because that's what they deserve for the game they're playing getting everyone excited and then canceling it last second.

Booooooooooooooo Atari hope it goes bankrupt and folds.

  • Oh well. Bring it to the Wii and give it full on 2D animation. Not that blurry 3D junk. If they're going to make it 2.5D, at least make it look more like Viewtiful Joe.

But yes...head-whipping with the Wiimote For The Win, says I.

  • The article also states, "However, it doesn't appear that PSP fans can expect too much more in the upcoming future. Talking about their E3 plans, Alissa told us that "I don't believe Atari will be focusing on PSP titles at E3.""

Looks like Atari has abandoned the PSP in search of greener pastures such as the Wii.

  • That's too bad, seriously. I was hoping they'd get around to remaking Earthworm Jim 2 as well. And then Wild 9.

  • Honestly, with all the financial problems Atari's been having, they probably just flat out ran out of money to produce it. The guys gotta pay their electric bill somehow.

  • Who cares about the PSP?

Bring Earthworm Jim 1 or 2 to the XBLA, that is where it is at!

  • This is stupid. Why can a game that clearly could have done well. The PSP is really hurting right now, give it a chance Atari.

  • If they put EWJ on the XBLA, it would be the first and only game I bought from XBLA. And what is worse is that they dont realise how many people want it!!!

Forget the PSP, nobody owns that pile anyway.

  • I love my PSP Justcrim you pile of shit.

  • Isn't is just "EJ" and not "EWJ"?

  • @Justcrim: I never played it, and I came to the comments just to suggest that it should be upgraded to 720p and put on XBLA.
