EA, they like them some cash money. So with the winds of change sweeping across the gaming plains, propelled by the upsurge in "casual gaming", they've decided to establish a division catering to that very thing. Called...wait for it...EA Casual Games, they've hired former Activision President Kathy Vrabeck to oversee things. Kathy, a little statement for the masses, if you will:
All over the world, consumers are playing games that don't require hours of intense concentration. The common denominator is casual fun. Whether it will be playing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on the Wii with the family or downloading Madden NFL 08 on a phone, quick-to-the-fun games are bringing new players and new demographics to interactive entertainment.
I can see how this move makes sense. Those long hours of intense concentration we've endured playing Madden, Need for Speed and Medal of Honour were obviously a major stumbling block to EA's business plans, something this will no doubt rectify.

Oh joy. Plans for more Wii mini games no doubt. Just what everybody needs.
check me out, want to buy some games from my haircut.
Am I I the only one getting tired of the so called casual game? I don't mean the games themselves, I mean the moniker. It's seems an absurd name when studies have shown that "casual" gamers play longer and more often than "hardcore" gamers. It doesn't sound like there is anything casual about them at all. They are just popular and fun games. I'm starting to think the term "casual" is just an industry buzzword meant to denigrate simple yet fun games because big studios are frustrated by the fact that they can't seem to make a decent profit on their megabudget titles.
That is a large picture.
She's hired.
But will there be waggling involved?
I love casual games... As long as they aren't mini game compilations. Although I favor "teh hardcore" games, the majority of them stave innovation.
That being said, even the casual genre is stagnating. Fewer brain games please, where's the next Nintendogs-caliber innovation?
I love the Wii, but EA can take their games and shove them up their ass. That's about as much use as I can seem to get from them.
I love that all "hardcore" games are becoming generic, copies with little imagination. Oh, wow, dragons and super soldiers you say? Woo.... I don't like the place "casual" games are headed, because to EA "casual" means crap.
@xot: Uh everyone is getting tire of "casual games" at least everyone here. They are the ones that denigrate the games, not the name itself
I don't really mind them.
If you don't play it fine. Stop complaining about it. It doesn't effect and there are more hardcore games out there then anything casual. Let the market grow and give everyone a chance to play video games
Did EA form an anime hair studio?
I thought EA had a casual games division. Is that not what POGO was? They even published a collection of POGO games on the DS if I recall correctly.
ah yes, yes they did. Pogo Island

But, yeah, it looks like the big new thing is that EA Casual's games will be based on other EA properties. I'll be interested to see how much they're willing to let this new division raid the existing IPs for content. They're going to basically have to figure out how to prevent, for example, Fifa Casual from competing with FIFA original.
God damnit, now i am going to have to buy a copy of bejewled every year with an updated roster and 1 new feature every season.
Wow, EA must be really wanting some cash to be able to smell it.
I'm also getting sick of the 'casual game' buzzword. It seems like the latest thing the corporate meatplows of the industry have grabbed onto and are swinging it in every direction.
EA sucks, we all agree on that. if you're a true sports fan you are stuck buying the same game with almost the same graphics with new rosters year by year and that is just criminal.
As for the hair comments, I like the hair but it kinda looks like EA wants to merge with Square again. Square was very smart to leave, very.
Does everything Wii seem like a quick cash-in? Including first-party Nintendo games? The Wii has a 2 year lifespan, tops. Nintendo will release a REAL console faster than they can say, "Humiliation" and/or "exploitation." People thought that, for $250 ($50 more than the GameCube) they were buying a "next-gen" console. They thought wrong. And this short-lived Nintendo domination with the N64 graphics (no Wii game has added up to GameCube level graphics) will be, well, short-lived.
How come no love for this woman like the droolfest that occurred with the Ubisoft Gal? I think she's really cute, albeit a little older. :)
No red headed step child love eh.....?
They've been planning to set up something like this for a while. I promise.
@falcinator: or maybe we're all just trying to get past the gender in games BS.
It will only go away when we all collectively STFU about the "OMG, teh grls in game dev" bs.
(sigh) probably the realistic answer to your question though is that people actually care about Assasin's Creed.
"Whether it will be playing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on the Wii with the family or downloading Madden NFL 08 on a phone..."
But...those are still just licensed franchises. Make with the original creativity already.
