Afrika sure looks nice! Pity we haven't heard a thing about the game for, oh, nearly nine months now. And even then have no idea what the game's about, or what you're supposed to do in it. So if you're of the feeling the project's either vapourware or has been canned, it's OK, that's totally understandable. Understandable, but wrong, because composer Wataru Hokoyama has just been tapped to lead a 104-piece orchestra in scoring the game. No, we haven't heard of him either (seems he's worked with 30 Seconds to Mars, Joss Whedon and on a bunch of short films), but since we've heard next to nothing of the game either that would make the two a perfect fit.

Unless the game involves a high powered rifle too, Im not touching it. ;D

Seriously though what is the game suposed to be about anyways? Since I always saw it as a tech demo more than anything else.
@Witzbold:
You see some people with cameras at one point, perhaps it's a photography game?
@Wuffles: Pokemon Snap meets jungle safari?
[lusoplay.sapo.pt]
I think this trailer is new :)
Hmm, this game looks interesting. Maybe it will be about saving or hunting animals in Africa. I hope you PS3 guy's enjoy it.
@Witzbold: Phil Harrison's already said there's no guns and no shooting.
@Captain Impulse:
I can only hope. :'D
On a side note, trying to get Pokemon Snap via Star Points -> Wii Points transfer and they're sold out cards. How can they be sold out of virtual data? D:
@Plunkett: Ya I think I remember that.
Sony never would have made such a title anyways. ;D
My only guess is that its going to be like that diving game on the Wii Forever Blue, one of those relaxation things.
@Plunkett:
What? A game without guns? Oh my god... where is the world heading too!? ;)
It would be cool if the game also allowed for players to be like on a helicopter and take photos from above and stuff. Although I could imagine that would be some pretty hefty processor power going on if they did that.
Would look damned fine though.
Man just thinking about that takes me back to watching National Geographic on tv and stuff as a kid.
It's probably one of those "Enjoy the game for the experience" types of things... like you walking around some Rhinos and Giraffes... um... and stuff.
@DigiMish: I'd rather walk around the Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball island if its just about the aesthetics and taking pictures.
@Captain Impulse:
I have this strange feeling that I would buy that game if it was like that. Again.
Still, it's a mystery in what you have to do. I was thinking along the lines of poaching animals. Or creating horribly mutated versions of them.
I'll go with the latter.
@Garo: Um... LocoRoco? Lumines? Katamari? Surely, they should have at least one gun somewhere, well hidden, but their success is definitely is an indication of gun presence :-)
Halo Killer?
Oh thank god! Man I was losing sleep over this. I'm going to call all my friends and tell them that they can rest easy because Afrika is still in developement. I mean, what would I have done if it was canceled? I've been really looking forward to whatever the hell it is that you do in this game for a long time now.

Dammit, sorry for the double, the comment didn't go through the first time, but both appeared when I posted again. Read the second one. I like it better.
I will play this if it accurately represents going to see the lions in Kenya. Only in Kenya.
They should throw Nathan Drake in there... I can't go back to adventuring without him :)
Who's panicing. Will anyone even notice when this is released on PSN and forgotten?
@Malmer: Will people notice when Afrika's forgotten?
Sounds like you have a front row seat for the event.
Believe or not there are people looking forward to this game. Not me though it does look interesting. But we get it guys, anything that does not involve killing or beating something is usually something that people get excited about.
@altgod:
The real question is, when will the real Africa (continent) start development? It's been third world for millennia. ;)
If it's a photography game, I'll buy it in a heartbeat.
@Captain Impulse: this made me lol...
@Captain Impulse: It will start developing once the governments there stop being corrupt and it would also help if 1st world governments weren't helping keep the corrupt governments propped up so that "deals" could be struck for the so called benefit of the price of goods we pay.
Some countries are making progress, but invariably some despot dictator "finds" their way into power. These dictators always happen to have enough military might to take over a country, but then barely have enough money to feed the country once they are in power. I wonder how they get these weapons in the first place and who funds them??? Hmmm....
@sauvage: It's not as cut-and-dry as all that. Most people are of two opinions on that; 1) First World countries should police the bad guys and help these countries to stand on their own, or 2) First World countries should stay the hell out and let them deal with their own problems, because it's not our job to police the world. If we give aid, we're aiding the bad guys. If we deny aid, we're denying the problem. Meanwhile, people suffer.
In short, First World foreign policy (not just the US) sucks ass.
Apologies for the tremendously off-topic post sparked by my thought-to-be-harmless joke.
Well, once Sony figured out that Sega had "the drive around in a jeep and lasso animals with a rope to save them" angle covered.....
"Wataru Hokoyama has just been tapped to lead a 104-piece orchestra in scoring the game. No, we haven't heard of him either (seems he's worked with 30 Seconds to Mars, Joss Whedon and on a bunch of short films"
I believe he was the guy that came up with a lot of the scoring for Firefly. Not the actual theme song, but all the music that happens in-between, when they show the ship in space or when they transition to a new scene.
As far as this game goes: I think they are doing the right thing. Don't let any information out, let people keep guessing, and when you finally reveal it, it surprises everyone.
Give those out there who hate everything Sony related less time to pick it apart.
Is this thread not updating, or are people not just posting? So, I guess this is a test post, just to see if it's stuck again.
Can I kill animals in this game?
@myshl0ng: well they give you a car maybe if you drive relay relay relay fast then maybe.
and hookers the game will have hookers.
You heard it her first giraffe hookers.
@Witzbold:
Seriously though what is the game suposed to be about anyways?
You have to search all of Africa to find the Rhino that's 'giving birth' to Jim Carrey.
So many games have had no information on them for months that they're ALL starting to look like Vaporware. Alan Wake, APB, Banjo 3, DOA Code Cronus, Elveon, GTR, Huxley, Theseis, Angel Rings, Coded Arms PS3, Heavy Rain, Marvel/DC Universe games, 8 Days, Gradius 6, Infamous, Ni-Oh, Redwood Falls, WarDevil, and those are all just exclusives. Not to mention that there are plenty of other games that obviously aren't vaporware but have had absolutely no information on them for almost as long at this point.
@Witzbold: Alls I knows is Sony is trying very hard to diversify their portfolio and sinking tens of millions of dollars into strange places.
I was just thinking about Afrika yesteday, wondering if they had cancelled it. I'm not too interested in it, so it's weird that I'd give a shit.
@Samos42: And BTW, Heavy Rain was just a tech demo. The devs of that team said something along the lines of they were going to use that engine for the "sequel" to Indigo Prophecy.
All I'm hoping is that "Heavy Rain" doesn't have a rubbish ending like Fahrenheit did. (Matrix-style clusterfuck ending for the lose)
Please tell me the soundtrack is being done by Toto.
This game will be hot whatever it is. Dont tell me that you guys dont love the African outbacks shown on the discover channel with the survival of the fitest routine just purely hot.
Take lovely snaps yummy bring it on sick of this bullshit kill carnage atm, i feeli like im turning into an american for gawds sake and i wont have that.
it would be awesome if it was an RPG! I'd roll Hyena everytime.
@rainofwalrus:
omg that WOULD be genius.
I really don't see why everyone is hating. That trailer shuyin_alucard linked to was just beautiful. The picture quality was poor, but I felt like I was watching a nature documentary. Couple that with the really nice music in the trailer, and for me it's a win. Okay, so we don't know what you actually do in the game, but I just loved the style. And the trailer said Q2 2008, by the way.
@rainofwalrus: My Meerkat would pwn that Hyena big time! ;D
@doubtful: Best game ever.
i could deal with this type of game if it was set in a rainforest/deep sea world and you got to find rare creature types since there are so many unknown creatures in rainforest and underwater
Wonder what will come out first Duke nukem forever of this? bet's anyone?
Well, if spelled "Afrika" it's definitely not english. I want to see a fictional alternate timeline in which the Nazis one and you get to go big game hunting with mp40s and Tiger tanks.
@Tsaketh:
Holy shit. *WON
