Last year, Disney spent $100 million on games development. This year, they're spending $130 million. By 2012? They want to be spending $350 million per year. That's serious cash money. Thomas O. Staggs, who is Disney's chief financial officer, cuts straight to the point:
We are ramping up our investment in video games.... It is a market where there is real opportunity.
No shit. The reason given for the boost is an increasing focus from Disney to make sure that all their products are top-shelf - they don't want a good movie but crummy novel and game, they want good stuff across the board.
Which all seems like a complete waste of money. It's all about the people, not the benjamins: they weren't spending $350 million when they got Dave Perry to make Aladdin, and that turned out just fine. Better than fine, even.
