When Kevin Jowett exited stage left a few days ago, it was obvious that whatever the reason behind his exit, at best his departure was still going to throw a spanner or two into the cogs of the PS3's British launch. Lo and behold, today we get news of spanners. While pre-order numbers look healthy (boisterous, even) on the retail side of things some are getting a little...concerned.
A trade price for the both the PS3 itself and software is still yet to be finalised, leading many independant retailers to fear the worst:
Some think this is a cover-up to hide some unpleasant news. There is now a feeling that they are about to be shafted by a non-indie-sympathetic sales director.
Sony's display unit demands are also leaving some less than enthused. Sony have apparantly asked retailers to erect display units that feature a HDTV, PS3, PSP, surround sound and even Sony-branded furniture.
This is probably something that comes from Sony central marketing that looks nice, but hasn't really been practically considered.Even the smaller versions won't work with most retailers. I wish Sony had worked more closely with us.
With Jowett only a few days out of the job, I'm sure these policies were in place before he left. Did they play a role in his departure? Are indy retailers about to get shafted? Won't be too long until we find out, I'm sure.
