Odd, but when I was searching for my half-sister on Facebook (didn't find her), I came across another "Brian Ashcraft." I've always thought "Ashcraft" was kind of a rare last name. I've never actually met another Ashcraft, though the lead singer of the Verve, Richard Ashcroft, has a name kinda close to mine.
True story: when I was in college, NME has a feature in which you could send in questions via email for famous bands, and then NME would have the bands answer them. Me, being the budding journo, sent off a bunch of questions for Liam Gallagher and former drummer Alan White. NME, goofed, and printed my name incorrectly as "Ashcroft." Here is how it played out:
nme.com: Brian Ashcroft also wants to know 'Who has the best shoes?'
Both: Me!
Alan White: Me, without a doubt. I've got the best loafers.
Liam: Me, you cunt! I have the best shoes.
Alan: Sorry. My Prada moleskin loafers are top.
Liam: I don't know what mine are. I just know that mine are the best and that's the end of it. Who's that from? Brian Ashcroft? That's Dickie Ashcroft, you cheeky sod.
Being called a "cheeky sod" by Liam Gallagher is still a personal high point. The full interview, my first, is here.
Anyway! Back to Facebook, I found another "Brian Ashcraft" and immediately sent him a friend request — you know, to have a Bizarro Bashcraft fill in when I'm sick and what not. He hasn't replied back. Probably freaked the poor dude out. Have you meet other Crecentes? Like not-family Crecentes? Brian Crecentes? I figure you or your hair broke the mold, so...
What you missed during the night:
Looking forward to E3. I've got some cool ideas for coverage I'd like to run by ya when I wake up. Till then, nite!

its not his hair that i see when i think of crecente, its the smile!
that calm happy grin is a nice site in his pictures.
I have a rare last name too, ive contacted one person online who had it also but ive not spoken to them for a while, they are quite old you see....
I have a really rare last name.
It's dePencier. Beat that.
My name is Alan White.
I don't have any loafers though.
Crencente, you want me to call you a cheeky sod. I'm no Liam Gallagher, but I'm a legend in my own mind, which is close, I guess.
Oasis FTW! Awesome band.
I completely understand a guy with the exact same name as me googled himself in Australia and found my msn address all the way in Canada, very weird but cool.
@leetdood: Brunet de Courssou :P
I met someone with my name at a convention once. I flipped out and took my picture with him. Pretty sure I weirded him out. But it was totally worth it.
There's thousands of people with my last name and even hundreds with both my first and last (maybe a thousand there too). It's gotta be the most average name on the planet.
[My name's not Rhys for those wondering]
Okay, so my last name is really original. It's Dutch and when my Oma and Opa came from Holland with my Dad and his brother and sister they became the only ones in all of Canada with that last name. Plus my first name is one rarely used (I've never met another person with my first name although there is one on a popular TV show) so my full name is quite unique. So much so that I am the only one in my name line that can pass it on since my Uncle couldn't have any kids and my Anut, well, changed her name when she got married. My Dad had only one son so that leaves me to carry on our name sake.
Here's the twist.
My Dad fathered a daughter before me with his first marriage. After my Dad and this woman divorce she keeps his last name and has a son out of wedlock years later. This son grows up with my last name even though he has not a drop of blood in him that would relate him to my Dad. So when this dude that shares my last name had a kid he passes not only my last name to him but he give the baby my first name as well and a middle name that has the same beginning letter as mine.
So that's my story. I know there is some slack job out there with my first, middle initial and last name out there. It pisses me off to no end I tells ya.
I learned all this through my half sister who also sides with me in this stupid naming game. I keep doing Google searches to see if he'll pop up but nothing yet. So far, it's all me baby.
Sorry for the rant... as you where...
@Phenix:
I'm a legend in my spare time.
A question for Ashcraft...why the shoes question?? Are you a fan of designer shoes are something...?
To turn the tables ...Mr. Ashcraft, what are your favorite shoes? And who out of the Kotaku crew has the best shoes?
@Havok154: Guitar Hero does not count.
"or something..."
Funny little story, but aside from the link at the end, you do not mention that the band is Oasis. Some folks might not know who you're talking about.
One other person in the US has the same name as me, so a few years ago a sent him an email.
He was in his late 40's, and I guess he was a little down because he ended our email conversation with: "hope your name serves you better than it did me".
I really hope my name isn't cursed. How could a name like Adolf Damien be anything but good?
Just kidding about the name. Funny thing about names, Adolf not popular at all anymore. And did you know that in the first decade of the 1900's Helga was in the top 10 most popular names?
So, ashcraft, are you english? I didn't know that, oh, wait, no your not, your from texas. so how do you know about oasis and NME? Those are english. weird.....
Bash is just asking to be bombarded with facebook friend invites
Try finding another "Shiraz Malik". Just try.
THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!
@The Raz: I'm Omar Malik if that helps. :D
Creepy, I know.
another Brian Crecente?!?! my head would explode! where would they find enough frilly shirts?!?!
All right, all right...so "Malik" is the "Jones" of the South Asian world. But still...Shiraz is much less commonplace than Omar, or Brian for that matter...right?
@TonyRockyHorror: I heard Oded Fehr was previously known as Brian Ashcraft...but it was too much for the world so he had to change his name...but you can still see the resemblance!
@commanderdeek:
I couldn't have agreed more.
/totally sending friend invite after work.
My last name is Cumberledge.
Never once have I met someone with that name that wasn't in my immediate family. Hell, I've never even been able to pinpoint its origin.
I've searched my name on facebook before. Biggest mistake ever. My name is common and I don't feel unique anymore.
i am actually a pretty huge facebook fan.
theres something like 5 or 6 other people with my name.
wow, i went to visit my ex-rock journalist uncle the other week and was reading through his massive library of old NMEs - i actually remember reading that very article! i love old oasis interviews, they're always hilarious. can't say that your name rang a bell if i'm entirely honest, but then again i'm not really in the casual habit of thinking about videogame bloggers throughout the day. still cool, though!
oh, and i'm unique on facebook. we're a pretty elite breed.
The Verve have just reformed today must have been announced after you posted this. Strange that you should mention them today in such a random way.
The Verve FTW never liked being happy anyway.
Well, my name is the same as a very famous Mexican actor, but for some reason Wikipedia doesn't have an article for him. Instead they have an article on some Soccer player from Spain.
[es.wikipedia.org] (David Silva, Mexican actor [Spanish])
[en.wikipedia.org] (David Silva, Spanish soccer player [English])
There are only a couple of hundred people worldwide with my last name, mostly in Germany or Pennsylvania. That being the case, the group of people with that name who could be considered my relatives is a fairly small group of about 15 people. Anyway, about 10 years ago I found out that there was another me living in Phoenix, so I emailed him, but he did not respond. I like to think that he was just trying to preserve space-time because he figured that I was a time-traveller. Either that or he was a douche.
My last names are spanish, but my first name is german, soooo, my name is not very common.
There's a fledgling actor with my name, and he's the co-creator of Tony and Tina's wedding. I know this because he has www.kevinalexander.com registered and is his personal online resume. I have the .net though...mwah hahahaha!
for the americans:
[www.gens-us.net]
see how popular your surname is in the states. mine's more prevalent than i thought.
My last name is rare outside of Vietnam so imagine how I felt when Kim started writing posts. Freaky.
It's strange how my name (Max) is so popular in Russia, Ukraine, and other East Slavic countries, and is quite rare here in Western Europe. Over two years I've been living in UK, I haven't met a single Max, which is wierd.
@geekgrrl:
Yeah. Notice that the area that most widely uses my last name is still the same state I live in. So there you go.
my last name is so rare, that when i hear about others, i can guarantee they're cousins or some kind of relatives. and my first name is really old fashioned (Josephine) so the only other Josephine's i've met were either really old ladies or were already dead.
