Google Releases Reader For Wii

Google has released a customized view of their RSS feed reader, which the marketing guys agreed to dub Google Reader, for the Nintendo Wii. Using the Wii Internet Channel browser, a custom version of Opera, Google has provided console internet surfers who have a taste for breaking news with TV screen readability and Wii remote specific controls.

It's not bad. RSS readers aren't the sexiest of services, but they're indispensable for internerds like us. I messed around with it for a few minutes before writing this up but highly doubt I'll ever touch it again—not unlike the Wii browser and the Virtual Console.

  • The VC? The VC is sweet...I understand the internet channel but come on man...punch out!! Punch out!

  • OH, I KID. I'm just a beer away from loading up the Wii with points for a Punch-Out!! purchase.

  • Excellent call! Didn't mean to jump on your back there...I just hadn't played PunchOut before...man this is the stuff!

  • That sounds good right about now. Not so much the Punch Out!, as I sucked at that game. (Or, at least the Tyson fight.) No. Beer, sounds good right now. I miss Random Beer days.

  • @McWhertor: So you don't like the VC?

  • Hah, my Wii's not even plugged into a TV at the mo. But I'm British so there's no Super Paper Mario.

Although having said that, I've turned my 360 on twice since I bought it two weeks ago.

  • I will never get tired of Wii puns.

  • Don't poo poo the Wii browser, it's the best console browser out now, by far. I happen to have a game room set up and if I don't have the laptop the wii browser is great for surfing on my big screen TV for a few minutes while I wait for player two to return., or I want to check the latest news without getting up.

  • @Janaff: Love the VC. Do I ever USE the VC? Not since my first week of owning one.

Super Paper Mario is all it's being used for these days.

  • @ampillion:

I used to get my ass handed to me by Tyson as well, but I picked the game up again about ten years later and whooped his ass on my first attempt. I was blown away. I just sat there thinking, "Why couldn't I do that before?" I guess my hand-eye coordination has greatly improved....or it was the weed. I haven't decided.

Anyhow, the Punch Out on the VC isn't the Mike Tyson version.

  • After playing through Zelda TP and having had a great time with Wii Sports and Wii Play, I don't play with the Wii everyday any more - instead rather like two times a week.
Still, there are not many days the Wii stays off. Youtube on the Wii is nice entertainment and if you just want to have a quick look at something on the net, it is faster to do it on the Wii than on the PC.
IMO the Internet Channel is a big plus for the Wii.

  • My enjoyment of VC was marred by the fact my first experience of it was Ocarina of Time, which runs pretty slowly and sluggishly and it's not at all fun to play, unlike the original N64 game. I blame poor emulation.

  • Wow, the wii channel bashing is quite funny to me. I play hours of virtual console, mainly street fighter, contra and punchout, but i have more than 10 games and they all rock! I also love the internet channel, if i ever want to browse the web with friends it's perfect.

Hey, at least Nintendo gives us some useful things for free, unlike Microsoft which gives us lots of crap that cost money. I have a 360 and wii and i enjoy the extra features of the wii much more. Stop your bitching people!

  • @boxelder...

I guess you haven't used Firefox on your PS3 then.

  • @Boxelder:
"...it's the best console browser out now, by far."

Have your used the PS3 browser with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse?

  • I have a slow-as-fuck pc (it takes about 5 minutes to boot up vs. the Wii's 30 seconds), and so I've found the Wii browser very useful for those quick peeks at how-to-capture-PuzzleQuest-enemies. Also very speedy at checking email, new posts on Kotaku, etc.

I, for one, am GLAD I at least have alternative means to getting on the internet. I may not use it for everything, but it comes in handy.

  • @Zadaz: it's not meant for prolonged sessions. you log in, check a few emails, log out and return to playing Wii Sports.

  • Why are RSS feeds never up to date?

  • "double dragon xbla wedensday" yea

  • I have GameFAQS bookmarked on the Wii browser. This usually causes problems when I'm playing Mario 64, which has no savestate function, but otherwise it's a perfectly acceptable substitute for going to another room and waiting two minutes for the computer to boot up.

  • @Zadaz:
Do mouse and keyboard really fit into a living room? They are basically devices designed to do productive work with them and something about that stops me from using them when sitting on a couch. In contrast to this the Wiimote feels more appropriate and "relaxed".
Frankly said, I'd say the PS3 doesn't count as video game console in this case, because it "steals" PC periphery and doesn't try to use the original console controls.

  • "I messed around with it for a few minutes before writing this up but highly doubt I'll ever touch it again-not unlike the Wii browser and the Virtual Console."

Do you think you're cool cause you dont like something other people do? Why bother writing about something you dont like so others dont have to hear your snobby remarks.

  • @KannonMAK: Yep. I think I'm cool. I've determined the best way to express this is by posting snide remarks on the internet.

  • A Wiider tag calls for an Elmer Fudd picture.

  • ok, sorry for not postin at all for 2 weeks, vacation.
wii browser is awesome and all (im on it right now)
i tested this google tool on the wii, holy crap does it suck! it has some serious errors to deal with, i mean, its the first day but jesus! that thing has more bugs in it than an etheopian has bugs on him!

The virtual console is awesome. Why wouldn't you touch it again? I have spent FAR more there than the PSN store and 360 Marketplace combined.

  • Image of Sloopydrew Sloopydrew at 04:20 AM on 05/09/07 *

Whoops! Did I do something wrong? I just asked why you would avoid the VC and said that I have spent more money there than on the PSN network and 360 Marketplace combined.

I'm sincerely not a fanboy. I was just stating a fact. Was my post deleted?

  • Okay, I think we had enough "Wii Browser is pointless" posts. How about a few "PS3 Browser is pointless" posts for a change? And because the PS3 browser is much more pointless than the Wii Browser, it needs at least twice as many posts than the Wii :-)

  • @L_K_M: Probably because this is a news post about the wii - so it would be sort of OT to discuss the ps3 browser.

Secondly because the Ps3 has more, and dare I say more critical, issues that we can discuss than its browsing capabilities. I think its a compliment that the only things people can complain about regarding the wii are how often they use certain free features.

Some of you guys need to snap back to reality and just accept different people think differently and have varying likes / dislikes. My wii collects dust - does that make me evil? According to some of you it does.

  • @asphix20: I did not propose to discuss the PS3 browser here, I proposed to have more posts denouncing the PS3's browser's uselessness, since we seem to have a few post about the Wii's browser's uselessness every week. Also, I was not serious.

And yes, your Wii collecting dust does make you evil. You could at least clean the poor thing from time to time.

  • I actually like the internet channel, since sometimes I want to look something up but would rather not have to go into the other room and start up my pc.

  • @Wernstar: I mainly use the internet chanel if others are around. Eventually, somebody will say something like "have you seen that youtube vid," or "did you hear about that web site where you throw a penguin." For those things, the Wii browser is perfect, because everyone can look at the screen easily, and up to four people can point at stuff.
